I remember scanning through a lot of music to see what my parrot liked. He seemed to like some types of electric music and liked things from particular artists as oppose to others who do music of the same genre. The only big consistency that I found was that he likes music that is predominantly led by vocals, like Sam Smith and certain Queen songs. He seems to mostly like the connection aspect where he can dance along and make noises with me. He seldom enjoys music on it's own.
The last memory I have with my dog, Daisy, was singing Over the Rainbow. I think I did that to keep my own composure, but now whenever I listen to the song or sing it myself, I think of our last time together. Walking along an empty road, beautiful weather, just her and I together one last time. I feel at peace that it's a good memory. Doesn't mean I don't cry, tho. I miss her every time I walk outside alone. Picturing her by my side instead of the breeze.
I played my cat some of the official cat music from the study and she started purring immediately and started to rub her head on my phone. She loves it so much.
My bird LOVES it when my mom plays guitar! And when I took care of the neighbours pets, one of the cats always came to me with headbutts and purrs as soon as I started playing a little tune on the piano. She responded more to that little tune than to other songs I played.

All of mine were completely freaking out at the Ligeti pieces played when the moon Monolith activates, and during the stargate trip. (Then again, Ligeti tends to confuse and freak out humans too...)

One shark week documentary showed that sharks are metal elitists. They hate melodeath so much that they violently attacked a shark cage to the point that the guy inside had to get out so he wouldn't be dragged to the bottom. I absolutely agree with their opinion.
ViviSectia Was that the one where they played stuff like Cannibal Corpse through a mic behind the boat? I remember they said great whites were definitely attracted to that
ViviSectia I think the reason is that sharks are very sensitive to lower frequency sounds such as the sound of thrashing prey so the sharks may have thought the music was the sound of a distressed fish.
I think the studies mentioned overlooked a huge detail. Humans probably like music as a result of our advanced language and math abilities. Music is just an auditory arrangement of complex patterns and algorithms. Our minds are wired to be attracted to those sorts of things
We had a cat years ago that seemed to love music. She would sit alert for hours right on the stereo position clearly listening. CD was just coming out at the time and the strange thing was that she would listen to LPs and cassettes, but if we put a CD on she would just quietly get up and leave. I've no idea what it was about them she didn't like.
Why we like music? It's soul resonance. I play music based on how I am feeling or how I want to feel at the moment and in doing so I connect to the music with my entire being. Wanting to follow along any way I can. Whether that is singing along, picking out an instrument and humming to it's melody, or just following the beat with my foot or hand whatever is free to move. The lyrics don't even have to be english. As long as the emotion I'm sensing from notes being sung match my own emotions, well... that's soul resonance. That's the best way I can put it.

Or calms them, depending on the song. We had a budgie who adored doof-doof music; not our preference but he ADORED it.😆 Music is MAGIC. 🤩🥰
I wrote a John martyn style descending folky chord pattern in an alternate tuning on my guitar and my cat loved it. He was really on edge when he came into my room and it really helped him calm down
I had a cat that would run from anywhere in the house to lay in front of the speakers when I had the album "Tubular Bells" playing. I don't remember her doing this for any other music.
One theory I have for why different species may enjoy or have been inspired to make it themselves is correlated to the stoned ape theory. Basically the theory is that humans have evolved consciousness through ingesting psychoactive substances like Ayahuasca, psilocybin, peyote and others and have been doing so for thousands of years. Mushrooms themselves are some of the oldest organisms on this planet. Many religious and spiritual practices as well as architectural and textile traditions also stem from this dee history of shamanism. Architecture from ancient cultures in the middle east, India and south America seem to be particularly inspired by such practices for example. While under the influence of these substances many people will hear not just sounds but very rhythmic very interesting music. Other species of animals also experiment with altered states of consciousness through ingesting these and other substances specific to their own biochemical anatomy. Again I have no proof 100% that this is why we find satisfaction in the hypnotic music we listen to but I think it’s worth bringing up. P.S. I would not recommend taking any such substances without thorough research, planning and risk assessment. While these may not be substances that you can OD on, they can have powerful psychological effects that can completely alter ones sense of self and reality. In some people who have latent hereditary schizophrenia, they can activate it for example. Be safe, be smart and always test what you have. Also if you’re under the age of 21+ absolutely do not use any type of drug under any circumstance until you are old enough to make informed decisions like that. It is not safe and you can really mess up your development. I’ve seen it too many times. I know some of y’all think you’re old and that you can handle anything, but believe me you are not ready. I am only 22 and the cognitive differences between me and someone who’s 16 or even 19 are massive. You are still a child. Your brain is worth waiting on and it doesn’t finish developing until you’re in your mid-late 20’s. I say this out of love not because I’m being lame. Be safe
When my cat was a baby playing my acoustic guitar and singing gently would help her fall asleep. Now she has no issues sleeping on her own but I still play for her sometimes
You like music because your brain places importance in patterns as well as repetitive feedback. this applies to other senses and is why you enjoy looking at colourful high contrast images, why you dance, basically why you enjoy life. I used to have 5 sense synesthesia on music when I was a teenager, taste and smell have to be trained, it's really hard
I’ve never noticed my dogs reacting to music if it’s playing from speakers, but whenever any of the instruments in my house are being played, at least one of them will usually come into the room and lie down nearby (apart from the drums, they are NOT a fan of drums)
I once had a cat who would jump up beside me on the piano bench whenever I was at the point of practice where the song sounded good. One day, we had a piano tuner at the keys. The cat walked in, looked at the stranger on the bench, and started hissing and freaking out. Bless that kitty.
I knew a girl once with a cat that loved opera. Anytime you played opera in the house, the cat would go up to the source of the music, and would just roll around and purr contentedly.
I have music on basically 24/7 so both the cat I had before and the one I have now are just used to it. I often times use it to calm them down and it works every time. Like on new year's Eve my old cat would get the anxiety of her life... As long as there was music on loud enough so she didn't hear the fireworks as much anymore she was fine. Our new cat is less anxious about stuff like that but when we're heading to the vet... Oh well. And my own little private study with her (😂😁) has show that she's definitely quieter and not breathing as heavily when we put music on she's used to. Also when my friend or I play guitar she immediately gets up and sits down in front of us and listens for a good 10 minutes or so.
I know for a fact my cat does not respond to music from my phone or laptop, but she responds when i specifically sing "you are my sunshine", wanting to cuddle when i do. She gets super relaxed
I'd LOVE to see animals brain waves being monitored live while listening to music to see exactly which regions of a given animals brain becomes more &/or less active and whether or not different genres makes any discernable difference! I know this video touched on that briefly but I want to know MUCH more! I've always thought this was a fascinating subject! An to ask, "Why do animals like music"? is no different than asking humans the same question! We've totally forgotten that we ARE animals too! We love to tell ourselves we're special & not just another animal! Yet in all reality, that's precisely what we are! We have capabilities which are in some cases more evolved or more useful than most animals but you could say the exact same of them! Animals have WAAAY better hearing, smell, vision, strength, in some cases coordination, etc.! An to claim animals aren't conscious of their own existence, I've always thought was an immensely naive & absurd statement! I think animals(most) are totally aware of their existence! Perhaps they understand &/or express it in ways we're incapable of recognizing &/or comprehending but in ways we can too! Some we can even relate to! Yet because they can't/don't communicate how WE want them to, we just discount them as being no more conscious than a stick! An go on thinking they're totally unaware of their existence! An sadly that creates an 'us & them' mentality! An it tends to cause people to think of animals as unequal humans! An worse, People don't TREAT animals as equals, I really think our approach to animals has been a MASSIVE mistake & most of it needs to change ASAP! Actually, We're right, we're not equal to animals, They're BETTER than us! We should be learning FROM them as much as we're learning ABOUT them! FYI: Chimps are our closest ancestor an their DNA is STILL to this day only 2% different than ours, What's that tell you?
My Cockatiel liked The Blue Danube when it was used in a commercial. He will also kind of harmonize to other songs if I whistle them, but not if I sing them.
With cats it is hard to tell curious about something from actually liking something. What you really need is a way for the animal to select different music in the same part of the cage.
My cat responds positively (or more accurately, inquisitively), when I play bright, major chords and higher pitched notes on the guitar. She seems to really enjoy A, D, and G major. She doesn't respond as much to minor chords.
we had a parakeet that was intelligent and was a character . we listened to many kinds of popular music and he would get excited af at some and start singing with it while moving back and forth on his perch , bobbing , head banging.either that or he really disliked it .
Patterns are why we like music, patterns are how we distinguish between the random and the choreographed events in our life. Its how we learn, and that applies to animals as well. In synthetic cellular brains used for AI, they controlled the "reward" system by playing a discordant tone when the AI failed, and a pleasant patterned tone when they succeeded, and this worked well. Brains do not like things without rhythm or pattern.
Philosophically, I have an issue with saying the "purpose" of evolved traits is to allow us to survive and reproduce. That's not accurate: it's a post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy to construct the statement in that order. It's true and accurate to say that the traits which survive are the ones which successfully survived and reproduced. However, any individual trait could be irrelevant to the survival or reproduction of the species or individual, and simply not be a drawback in that arena, existing for unrelated reasons. Further, purpose does not exist outside the context of a thinking observer, only effect. Purpose is something humans (and possibly other sapients, if such beings exist - whether animals like dolphins or possibly extraterrestrial aliens somewhere out there) construct as a narrative understanding of the contextual information we experience.
My cats like ambient, chillout and meditation music, one of them also likes Abba. When I was a kid we had a cat that liked to listen to Bach and would lie down next to the speakers when it was played.
*No animal loves music as much as cows.* Music is only understood by higher intelligence beings. That's why India considers Cows human-like so it is respected. It is same for Maasai warriors. Cows also has the ability to find and eat medicinal herbs that's why they were traditionally sent out to free range in the morning and they comeback on their own in the evening in India.
I had a cat that wanted to sit on my chest with her face in my face when I sang, and there she would stay, purring. A compliment of the highest order.

My cat Toomi loves the goal horns played during hockey games, does that count?
Pretty fitting since his full name is '2 Minutes for Trouble.'
I like how you answered 0 of the questions I wanted answered :P
I am not blaming you, just really want to know more about the subject!
Of course they do. I had a cat that loved the harmonica.
Be safe
My dog used to listen to justin bieber

This comment is a relic from 2010
haha great
glad this was the first video you watched when u time traveled form 2011
When my cat was a baby playing my acoustic guitar and singing gently would help her fall asleep. Now she has no issues sleeping on her own but I still play for her sometimes
you like jazz?
You like music because your brain places importance in patterns as well as repetitive feedback. this applies to other senses and is why you enjoy looking at colourful high contrast images, why you dance, basically why you enjoy life. I used to have 5 sense synesthesia on music when I was a teenager, taste and smell have to be trained, it's really hard
I’ve never noticed my dogs reacting to music if it’s playing from speakers, but whenever any of the instruments in my house are being played, at least one of them will usually come into the room and lie down nearby (apart from the drums, they are NOT a fan of drums)
LOVE clicking on these to find a guest host. Any guest host
Yo my cat loves some Slipknot
He must be Psychosocial
That’s sic
That's pretty cool
I once had a cat who would jump up beside me on the piano bench whenever I was at the point of practice where the song sounded good.
One day, we had a piano tuner at the keys. The cat walked in, looked at the stranger on the bench, and started hissing and freaking out. Bless that kitty.
My cat doesn't appreciate anything 😂
Paradox wow
Paradox mines great and loving lol
Paradox That's because it's a cat.
Especially Bach!?!
I think my guinea pig likes the guinea pig song. 🤔🤷 His tastes is all over. But classical chills him out & makes him sleepy
I knew a girl once with a cat that loved opera. Anytime you played opera in the house, the cat would go up to the source of the music, and would just roll around and purr contentedly.

you trying to tell me the tank gave you this info?
Lukecis it had to do something after delivering death to Tiger crews
Do insects like Ant Music or Bee Bumble and the Stingers and is a dog's Bach worse than his bite?
You'd think the insects would like The Beetles ;)
I suppose I'll have to ask my cat, "What's new, pussycat?" Now.
There is no doubt that parrots and cockatoos love music; watch them dance and sing on youtube.
I know for a fact my cat does not respond to music from my phone or laptop, but she responds when i specifically sing "you are my sunshine", wanting to cuddle when i do. She gets super relaxed
Music is a mating ritual
We had a cat that liked punk music, or at least liked to sleep in front of the speaker.
My Cockatiel liked The Blue Danube when it was used in a commercial. He will also kind of harmonize to other songs if I whistle them, but not if I sing them.
Lobsters are naturally, big rock fans.
fireaza rock lobster
They are permanently dressed like they are going to Sabaton concert.
We like a beat and vocalizations because of being in the womb. Must be why my favorite band is Heart!
2:58 *racial jokes intensify*
Definitely needs a related playlist of animal-music.
My cat doesn't... And she also doesn't like it when I some either...
Everybody's a critic.
My cat genuinely loves Enya
Yes animals do like music. My cat sits next to my speakers whenever I'm playing music.Kendrick Lamar is a particular favourite of hers.
we had a parakeet that was intelligent and was a character . we listened to many kinds of popular music and he would get excited af at some and start singing with it while moving back and forth on his perch , bobbing , head banging.either that or he really disliked it .
That t-shirt is simply not acceptable.
DemonXeron I don't get it. What's it mean?
Ahna Jenerou same, I don't get it
Missoula, Montana area code.
It's where Sci-Show is recorded, and where Hank Green lives.
DFTBA
Frennis Daemon good answer, but I was referring to the http error code.
My dogs seem to feel peaceful and sooky when I sing softly to them. They look up at me with the big "I love you and I feel so loved" eyes.
Your light source on the host’s left side is too intense. Perhaps bleeding from the instrument being used for your green screen.
Music is transcendent, there is a spiritual element to it
humans r animals... this is discrimination... bad SciShow
My cat likes listening to the calm instrumental pieces that I listen to. Most of them are inn or tavern music from video games.
My cats like ambient, chillout and meditation music, one of them also likes Abba. When I was a kid we had a cat that liked to listen to Bach and would lie down next to the speakers when it was played.
so this channel's SciShow. How about doing an episode on how music affects chakras and thus some music are better at bringing about peace than others?
My cat loves when I sing “never enough” from the greatest showman . She climbs on me and rubs against me :)
Dope short, my guy
This is the science I subscribed for
Sci show has an answer to every one of my odd questions 😝
