    You have some nice works! For my oil pastels that I intend to sell to collectors, I give them at least four weeks (more if they have thick layers) before applying a fixative. Even though oil pastels never totally dry, a few weeks exposed to the air will harden them up a bit. I find that it takes 5-7 coats off the Sennelier fixative for oil pastels to really seal them well.

    • @YolandaBlazquez
      @YolandaBlazquez Год назад +3

      Thank you! I don’t let them "cure" for that long, a day or a couple of days max and they harden a bit but I don’t find a difference when applying the fixative. 7 layers are a lot 🥲 the hairspray does really well just with two but I can’t say it’s archival or made for this

      @@YolandaBlazquez I've never tried hair spray on oil pastels, but I used to use it on dust based pastels and charcoals back when I was a student. You are one of my main inspirations for Oil Pastel art, especially Portraits. I'm especially mystified by how you draw hair with such amazing results.
    I wanted to use fixative on oil pastels and read an article that said hairspray was pretty commonly used with oil pastels and I tried it with fairly good results.
    The article also said to give the pastels some time to dry before applying the fixative, and also questioned whether Oil pastel required fixative at all for most situations especially if it was going to be framed. Then I saw some Grumbacher Final Fixative on sale for 9.49 and it worked even better than hairspray on oil pastel even though it said it was for Pastel Charcoal and Pencil, which I assumed it meant Chalk pastel only. I've also heard about the Senneleir Oil Pastel fixative but I don't like how expensive it is and am determined to find something cheaper.

      If you are going to frame them I wouldn’t bother applying anything and even when I simply store them, I often don’t spray them with any fixative, I just cover them with glassine.I don’t know how archival hairspray is but to me it works the best!

    i just recently bought the sennelier fixative as well & it took 3 heavy layers for it to stay & not transfer. you kind of have to spray it directly at the paper & let it get saturated; not enough that the paper is soaking wet, but just slightly where you can see there is liquid on the page.

      Thank you 🙂 the paper looks wet when I apply it too, in the original footage I can see it going from wet to dry but maybe I could do thicker coats. It surprises me because the label on the can says to apply thin layers but I don’t want to do 6 or 7, that’s too much.

    I've had a similar experience as you using Sennelier fixative and hate inhaling the fumes from the spray. However, there's a varnish for oil pastels made by Royal Talens and it works very well by sealing the oil pastels compeletly with no transfer. One thick layer is enough. The drawback is a glossy surface it creates, which might be a bit problematic, if you want to look at a painting from an angle, but I guess it's no worse than an oil painting in that respect.

What I use is a general purpose Kamar varnish made by Krylon, however I am having more trouble with finding any locally. I use it both as a workable fixative for layering and as a final sealer. I spray about three coats on both counts. It holds well and is supposed to be archival.

      I can’t stand them either, it’s too much. I don’t use anything on my pastels and they hold just as well. Oil pastels don’t need anything, I think keeping them with a glassine sheet until you frame them under a glass (with a mate so they don’t touch) is completely fine but people like to use fixative to kinda "secure" them, in case you rub against them by accident or something.
