At first, this device seemed really nice. A few ATSC 3.0 channels had issues with the spinning wheel, but many didn’t, and it was able to play back many DRM laced channels without an internet connection, perfectly fine. The box also offers a seamless Android experience. However, it took actually using it for prolonged periods of time-noticing the video and audio issues, as well as discovering the security vulnerabilities along with unofficial sideloaded apps, that makes me not recommend this. These issues can be fixed, but until they are, I won’t be recommending it or using it.
Awesome video! I'm a little disappointed that the other channels reviewing this device did not catch the video and audio sync issues. I was considering picking one up from AliExpress that you mentioned in the beginning until I saw the rest of your video. If ATSC 3.0 is going to continue with DRM, these devices need to be higher quality. For mass adaption network tuners need to be available and support any smart TV, tablet, and phone on the market. On top of that, a simpler modulation scheme needs to be used so that a cheap flat antenna can pick up these OTA stations for most people.
I'm also a bit disappointed I didn't catch the video/audio sync issue. My problem is I'm not able to pick up the ATSC 3.0 channels at my house. I have to travel to a friend's house and spend about an hour in his partially finished attic to test 3.0 units. Hopefully this issue is fixed with an update. For future reviews, I will have to stay in a hotel to spend some significant time watching the channels.
I have the USB stick that connects to the phone and tablet it works grate especially when it plays back recording. They should have upgraded the usb stick instead of making this pice of crap.
12 Reasons why OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Just say NO to (DRM). Tell your USA Government about the Hostile Takeover of (OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV) issues listed below. DRM (Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why? Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why? 3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels. Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow). No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices. Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems. Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why? You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels. Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound. Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them. OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes. No one has solve the problem of no government money for free DRM 3.0 TV tuner boxes because 1.0 TV turners and recorders will not work after that TV Station switches to 3.0 TV broadcasts. (Range and signal error correction) OR (more sub channels and near 4k picture) trade off problem. FCC is not forcing any 1.0 TV Stations to move over to 3.0 TV. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0. The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. DRM ATSC 3.0 is a not finished product and is a work in progress mix of unproven ideas that has never gotten full FCC approval at this time. Software updates for 3.0 tuner boxes may be needed for changes made to the unfinished and future added new official ATSC 3.0 standards modules. Patent License problems. LG no longer sells TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners. Some 3.0 TV tuners companies may go out of business or stop updates leaving you with no DRM or software updates. OTA ATSC 3.0 is better but is not perfect and still can be affected by weak tv signals: (distance, weather, planes, trees, buildings, trucks, poor antenna, etc). FCC rules that 5 percent of old ATSC 1.0 coverage area does not need to be covered anymore = (SHORTER RANGE). Viewing zone outside of your 15 minute city or town could be blocked. Your TV viewing habits could be tracked by your serial number or IP address. ATSC 3.0 is updatable until it is not updatable without new hardware tuners (ATSC 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0......). Some of these 3.0 TV issues may be fixed over time. This is only some of the mess with DRM ATSC 3.0 TV. This is my opinion why DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. IMO. Stay on OTA 1.0 TV until DRM is removed from OTA ATSC 3.0 by law. It is the people versus the hostile takeover by private DRM 3.0 TV stations for control over the USA public airwaves. IMO 2025.
The more people buy these ATSC 3.0 boxes, the more the broadcasters can claim the adoption rate is high enough to discontinue ATSC 1.0. It seems that ATSC 3.0 and the Next Gen certification has been screwed up by corporate greed and is no longer serving the public interest, convenience and necessity. With this standard, OTA TV will fail and there will be one less method of delivering emergency information because no one will bother with using OTA TV. I gave my comments to the FCC, but I’m not hopeful that the incoming administration will do anything about this but make it worse.
@jeffreykoerber6595 All free old OTA ATSC 1.0 TV subchannels legally gone in 2027. This FCC legal trick means no free money for New DRM 3.0 TV tuners legally needed to be paid for by the DRM 3.0 TV stations. OTA DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 TV stations plan to steal all of the (Free OTA ATSC 1.0 subchannels) in one evil move by installing only (1 permanent forever Reverse ATSC 1.0 TV lighthouse transmitter antenna) to replace all old 1.0 TV stations in an area in 2027. People still can watch the free old OTA ATSC 1.0 TV without any subchannels and without needing a new expensive DRM 3.0 TV tuner box. This FCC legal trick says only one main Free channel and no subchannels are required by FCC rules. Your free OTA (over the air) USA TV subchannels birthright gone in 2027. @AntennaMan
I was going to ask you about this. But no surprise, you're ahead of me.
The Zapperbox is also a good ATSC 3.0 tuner as well (Internet Connection be damed).
The Problem with the zapper box is its way over priced.
Here in Las Vegas market. atsc 3 for fox 5 will never work offline with drm. They are broadband atsc 3 channel.
No need to connect to the internet. At least this is a start.
on my wish list. Hartford New haven Ct nyc
are. atsc 3.0
Other reviewers need the Internet for drm
Well, that's disappointing. ATSC 3.0 is such a mess that it has to be cheap and simple.
