This is nothing new unfortunately and it affects men and women alike. What people don’t tell you is college is also meant to make connections with people who could give you a great opportunity. Also many of the times women get degrees that aren’t in demand and aren’t specialized.
They weren't saying men don't experience these things, but that women have another layer of obstacles, trying to make "connections" in often male-dominated industries. And I don't know what folks expect, young adults take thier short-human lives seriously, if I'm gonna work in the US, with all of its corprate-anti-citizen greed bs, of course I wanna work for the rest of my life in the career/topic I'm passionate about. And most millennials, gen z & zillennials know that college is supposed to provide a big edge for internships & programs, but most American colleges these days aren't preparing thier students with the proper skill levels or other requirements to get those vital early first steps into those industries. And getting these "connections" is even harder for black people, since well that should be obvious. The idea that college was a gateway to dream jobs or dream careers just isn't there anymore.
College degrees are meant to be use for teaching or management positions. When people are going to school they need to be mindful of what degree they are picking and what class they attended.

thats a definite not a maybe but she likely won't leave that comfort zone. Women are nesters and that works against them in many professions where rootlessness is required.
The problem is she can’t rent an apartment in Atlanta without a job and many businesses only want to hire someone already living there (i.e. she can’t get a job without an apartment).
More women are underemployed "Even though women are the majority of bachelors degrees", This statement makes no sense, "even though"? Why would the fact that women on average choose higher education than men imply it should be easier for them to find a job that fits their level of education? I believe the contrary is the case actually. Because women have higher education it makes sense they will be underemployed more often than men and overemployed less often.
Nothing new either - underemployment amongst college-educated women. It's been described by economists such as Levitt: at a point, the majority of college-educated women ended up becoming... stay at home mothers, because college had enabled them the opportunity to meet a wealthy husband. It's a less sordid form of underemployment, but underemployment nonetheless.
I think if you look at the numbers, you will find that the majority of upper management positions are filled by men. When they go to hire someone, they are often going to hire the person they relate to, which is unfortunately often another man. It's not surprising that women are having difficulty breaking into some of these career fields.
@@fairywingsonroses That may be true, but it's not "the problem." The majority of people will never be upper management anyway, male or female. The ability to get a job right out of college has nothing to do with hiring at the upper management levels.

Marketing degree is not top in employers minds because most people have marketing knowledge unlike tech degree 📜. However keep applying , upskilling and working hard because your star 🌟 will surely shine one day.
Could it be there is a misalignment between what is being offer in education with where the employment opportunities are? Or could it be the career choices students are sold are not informed by labor market data? No mention of that in this segment. Why?
It has to do with you following THEIR curriculum or making your own. College is about knowledge no a career. At least originally. You go to get smarter so you and THINK of ways to MAKE your own way. With a Marketing Degree why isn't she marketing something?
According to the Fed there are abundant "employment opportunities", they publish figures showing record job openings each month and use those figures to justify maintaining interest rates at a certain level. What is never mentioned is qualitative information about those "opportunities". In other words, how on Earth is a college graduate supposed to feel as excited as Jerome Powell about jobs being advertised by McDonald's and Subway?
The PROBLEM with a 4 year degree is that it is THEIR Curriculum. The trick to a college education is making your own curriculum and learn the knowledge and skills that fit your interests, skills and talents. Using it for a job route doesn't work unless it's 'Linked In'. A degree from a not Ivy League College is a dime a dozen. I went to a dozen colleges and universities and still don't have a Bachelors. No need, I'm a Master at the things I do and need no piece of paper, my portfolio and my record of accomplished projects got me employment anywhere I went. Never an issue finding work. many times it found me by referral. USE the institutions don't let them use you. No, just means start again at the next higher level.
You won’t need a degree if you start your own business. But it’s very hard. This road to success is littered with numerous failures. Getting a college degree is an easier way to success. It opens many doors. The trick is though, getting the right degree from the right university.
It's crazy because "Marketing" is such a high in demand skill that's NEEDED in companies. Hopefully, she found great employment by now. But it's never a waste to get a college degree...even the very elite still attend and finish college.
Marketing doesn't require a degree. It requires experience and knowledge of the subject you are trying to market. Therefore the degree doesn't guarentee a job. That's not necessarily the students fault for not understanding, the school should have made it very clear that it's s weak degree in the job market

Insurance has a lot different positions to move up to and the industry got a lot of money. P.s (people are required to have house and car insurance.) Some position you can just work at home. I wonder what she’s up to now and if she got a job in her field. I wish they highlighted what she specifically wanted as a career and what she’s trying to accomplish. All I got is “I went to college, I graduated, and I only have student debt.” It’s the narrative that resonates with too many of us.
Yep. I have a college degree and I am underemployed. I cannot get a job in my field because of the job market and no one will give me experience. I graduated in 2020 like this young woman.
First, a college degree is not necessary beneficial or advanced enough to transform minds. I stopped going to school after college (no further degrees) because I didn't want more debt for seemingly no additional benefits aside from having a piece of paper saying I can earn more money. Another part of me recognizes that there is an obvious benefit to education. Maybe not in retaining knowledge/facts but how to seek out information to make better decisions. Either way, a marketing degree is like a communications degree. It's not as prestigious as an accounting, finance, or medical degree. So it's more relevant what you do with that broader degree after you graduate to determine your success. At least that's what I've seen. Don't get stuck in a lower level job that doesn't require a degree. Your degree has a shelf life of 5 years. Keep applying to jobs that require it and build your skill set and experience. Don't settle for less if you want more.
It took more than 5 years after graduating for me to find a full-time job with benefits in my field. In that time, I had a kid, which added further complications and complexities to the situation. I did find a job, but the pandemic hit 3 years in, and then my salary would no longer cover the cost of living in the city where I worked. I finally quit due to burnout, and now I make $15 an hour at a job that still requires a degree, but it allows me to work from home and take care of my kid. I'm still deciding if the tradeoff was worth it. Thankfully, I have a supportive husband and no debt, but it's still frustrating to know that I invested so much time, money, and effort into this endeavor only to have it take forever to even find a job and then have it fall through almost immediately after being hired.
@@larrystaley21 It's not about having a spouse that can help. It's about the fact that I couldn't help myself. If I didn't have a supportive husband (and I didn't for several of those years), I'd be completely financially destitute.
Collège is 60/40 women and debt is going to be equivalent. Why are men joining college at a lower rate? Are they more aware of the market & risks or is college pushing young men away?
And colleges have become quite anti-male. I'm black and I started college and a PWI (predominantly white institution) in the early 70s. At the time, there was still a lot of anti-black prejudice among the white students and faculty. I know what that looks like, and I see it being applied to white male students today.
Marketing department in a big corporation like food companies has many roles in my southeast asian country. They work in the office, improve the design of labels in food packages, improve images of food pictures in the store, improve the promo for the month, checks the price in an advertisement if it is correct. They do feasibility study for opening new stores. They go to a new place, count people who passes by. If there are few people walking, no new store will be placed. Or work as a marketing agent in any company.
Keep adding unnecessary workers and applicants to the work face the demand for labor and replacements goes away. Especially if growing portions of those jobs get out sourced or automated. No economy can withstand single women but its lesson that has to be learned the hard way.
I can empathize with her. I thought that marketing was a degree that is useful. However, it seems like the jobs are all in STEM. So, if you want to go to uni, go into STEM. Or go into health care or trade school. Anything other than that will be challenging to find work.
It sounds like women are bad at picking majors. I was underemployed as well out of college. Why did this happen? I made a lot of poor choices which included my major. I wasnt good at math so i focused on the degree itself. It was a Bad choice. What we need is more accountability.
I was in the same boat. Graduated with a Psychology degree and an MBA and all I could find was a Management Trainee Position at a car rental place that paid 36k. It was my own fault. Instead of thinking employers will be waiting for me with my super special degree when I graduate I should have gotten a grip on what the labour market is like by doing internships, taking on leadership positions as a volunteer or in student societies, creating something that will set me apart from other applicants. Companies dont care if you followed your passion and got a stupid degree. They want to know what benefit they get from having you work for them. Being naive and self centered was my problem. Luckily I managed to get an entry level HR position and have since worked myself up while working as a freelance Psychologist as well (I had to get a MA in Clinical Psychology to do that while working but its doable)

Not really, since virtually every business that exists needs to have marketing activities in order to grow. Businesses that don't have notoriety don't grow, as their customer base is simply unaware of their existence. Now whether marketing degrees do teach useful stuff is another entirely different story. Anyway, if I were you I wouldn't be blowing my own trumpet too loud because accounting and audit are two prime candidates to face the threat of AI.
1:15 untrue. Its more likely with Black men to be underemployed than with Black women. We want the higher positions which require being responsible for the actions of the "other" Black people at the office, but are not offered (or are denied) such jobs. I was also laid off twice in a row from jobs in my field. I wasn't even making that much. Now I can't find anything.
Get yourself a CDL, trucking companies are hiring.
Alot of collage educated people don't find work in their field. Fact of life
This is nothing new unfortunately and it affects men and women alike. What people don’t tell you is college is also meant to make connections with people who could give you a great opportunity. Also many of the times women get degrees that aren’t in demand and aren’t specialized.
Liberal Arts Degrees are worthless.
That's true. Women's studies, social work, sociology are female dominated and poorly paid and/or have no jobs
I have a friend who graduated in Pre-Med, and he’s been working as a line assembler for 6 years now. Average pay is $19 hourly. No degree needed. But I still hope he gets the job that he wants.
Why didn't he go to med school or teach biology?
Why did he only do Pre-Med? That is supposed to be a stepping stone into medical school.
New question is…Why both women and men with bachelor degree are not getting any jobs related to their degrees?
Why are they working in jobs that only requires a high school degree. Nowadays if you are not a master degree engineer, a PhD holder, or a medical school graduate you are just applying to ghost job posting.
There are no professional jobs. When they took the factories they not only tool manual labor but they also took:
1. Accountants
2. Finacing jobs
3. Pensions and retirement management.
4. Electricians
5. Plumers
6. Marketing
7. IT people
8. Business managers
9. SUPPLY Chain managers
10. Quality Engineers
11. Process Engineers
12. Product Engineers.
13. Logistics management
14. NURSING
15. DAY CARE

That’s definitely part of the problem! Too many jobs are leaving the country. Something needs to be done to stop that!

I love History and wanted to get my degree in History, but I ended up getting a Computer Engineering and Cybersecurity degree instead. The degree was extremely challenging, and I wanted to quit all of the time, however I knew I needed a good paying job, so I persevered. Now I’m making 120K working in Tech and can enjoy my life. It’s all about trade-offs.
That sounds great to be honest. I got MIS degree and a year and a half later can’t get a job with it. Making 16 an hour at a desk job pushing papers for 2.5 years. Can’t ever dream of 120k🥲

Asia probably has to move to a bigger city, even Atlanta or Charlotte, for more marketing opportunities.
True
thats a definite not a maybe but she likely won't leave that comfort zone. Women are nesters and that works against them in many professions where rootlessness is required.
She lives there because she has to live with her mom who lives there. There's nothing to suggest she didn't apply for jobs in ATL or wherever.
Good catch. That statement is illogical.
It means the uneducated man is getting the job the woman has the education for.
Everyone wants a dream job. There’s no dream jobs you’ve been fed a lie. The jobs that pay today are trade jobs. Cause those jobs society actually needs. It’s time to grow up.
Marketing degree is not top in employers minds because most people have marketing knowledge unlike tech degree 📜. However keep applying , upskilling and working hard because your star 🌟 will surely shine one day.
People think they have marketing knowledge because they get marketed TO, and they think that makes them qualified.
Perfect timing for Women's History Month. Keep speaking up and moving forward. We need to change this!

It’s 2022: anyone who acts like all degrees are viable are in denial or trying to sell you something
@Merican Modi a ton of stupid people think that. And they all want us to subsidize their stupidity through student loan forgiveness
@@DoubleStudentLoans It's what the government and the education industry sold them. It's what their teachers and counselors told them from kindergarten on. Asia you’re education won’t go waste it. Just do some research and see which industry need your skill the most and which companies is good to get into. Try insurance companies.
I graduated in 2020 like this young woman.
having a college degree doesn't mean you will get a job.. I think you have to get the degree (major) that is currently in high demand
Exactly. Not the degree that seems fun and easy.
Women will keep going to college til some one stops them. "Free money" loans and 4 years of partying will never be something they pass up
First, a college degree is not necessary beneficial or advanced enough to transform minds.
Barriers to entry are hindering real work and innovation. It’s exhausting having to explain to employers you NEED MONEY
Can't your husband help?
@@larrystaley21 It's not about having a spouse that can help. It's about the fact that I couldn't help myself. If I didn't have a supportive husband (and I didn't for several of those years), I'd be completely financially destitute.
Collège is 60/40 women and debt is going to be equivalent. Why are men joining college at a lower rate? Are they more aware of the market & risks or is college pushing young men away?
It's the cost of college and not enough of return on investment
And colleges have become quite anti-male. I'm black and I started college and a PWI (predominantly white institution) in the early 70s. At the time, there was still a lot of anti-black prejudice among the white students and faculty. I know what that looks like, and I see it being applied to white male students today.
There's more opportunities for women - accounting, nursing, psychology, teaching etc. Men would rather learn a trade like truck driving or welding
I know a manager I worked with at a local surf shop (he’s still there actually) and he has both a bachelor’s and a MASTERS degree in history.
