The story is simple, his father killed by the Mafia boss, he watched it as a kid in the corner. Then he grew up, get close to Mafia boss's daughter and became his bf, joined the Mafia gang and gain the trust of Mafia boss, kill the Mafia boss and still be with his daughter. He became the person he hated growing up and he ask for forgiveness from his late father.

No, the Mafia boss raised him as a kid. That's why he asked the church for forgiveness. He feels guilty for killing his adopted father, but also guilty if he doesn't avenge his biological father.
