It's not necessarily the caffeine... I can drink a Kickstart 2 hours before bed and sleep just fine. I found the culprit was that I had trained myself to wake up at several set times during the night by always looking at the clock. I was also keeping myself awake at times by obsessing over how late it was, what time I had to get up, and getting to a cycle of anxiety over having not fallen asleep. So I had to hide the alarm clock from view. It took a couple weeks, but I finally broke the habit of waking up every other hour.
Another problem can be interrupted sleep cycles. White or Pink noise reduces interruption and a sleep tracker can help wake up from the end of a cycle, when you're in stage 1, instead of in the middle of a rem cycle or stage 4.

The idea of having night terrors but also being too anxious to not have your back to the door sounds like it could’ve produced some terrifying dreams where you saw someone standing at your door and I am stressed on your behalf

I'm the absolute opposite. It's like I still buy into the idea if I don't turn over and look whatever scary thing I "sense" it can't hurt me.
Shadow Demon: "muwahaha, I'm gonna scare the shit of her."
Also Shadow Demon: "Damn it, she's under the covers." Or "Shit. Her eyes are closed. My ONE WEAKNESS!"
Consequently, I recently watched ManlyBadAssHero play through a game called "(Don't) Open Your Eyes" about this person having a conversation with his/her own shadow-demon-thing and it scared me more than any other horror movie or game before because of how accurate it was.

I then got a shredded memory foam pillow that you can add and remove the stuffing till its right, and that has been the best. Then I started using the cube for a hugging pillow, and its kind of the best hugging pillow I've ever used, because its thick, and doesn't go flat like a pillow with stuffing. My fiancé did for years, but around turning 30 he started having persistent neck pain made worse by sleeping on his stomach. Driving long distances made his pain worse but it was there regardless.
He never had pain until then, but once it was an issue, it didn’t really stop. We’ve been training him to side sleep with a pillow tied to his stomach and back. 😂
Fun fact, it’s healthiest for long term brain function to side sleep. Your lymph nodes drain more efficiently in that position and the sort of... general housekeeping of the brain is more efficient. Over the years There’s more to do, and as you get older it’s more important to side sleep. There have been some recent articles about it that are interesting, at least showing a link with less frequency of Alzheimer’s or milder symptoms in side sleepers.
Everyone wants to find a comfortable way to sleep, and some things just FEEL unnatural. But... just thought I’d make sure you knew. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Good luck and good dreams. 🌷

ok i know this video is so old, but i have Beef with the pillow cube and i must share. the thing that pisses me off is that everyone needs a different height of pillow depending on their shoulder width & bed depth. i once had a pillow that was perfectly comfy for my soft bed at home, but when i went to summer camp, the mattresses were super hard & that pillow felt like the flattest, most useless thing ever. the more you sink into the bed, the less pillow height you need to keep your head at the right angle. what makes me the MADDEST is that pillow cube KNOWS THIS. in all their ads i've seen, they show people laying on tables. this is because the pillow cube only makes sense if you don't sink into the bed at all. the one time they show someone using the pillow cube on a bed, it's not a person using it, it's a plastic model skeleton, which, of course, won't sink into the bed at all. they realized their product wasn't foolproof, and instead of offering different height options for different bed softnesses/shoulder widths, they just. made their ads deceptive. cool move.
ty for coming to my ted talk--

After quite the adventure trying pillows that didn't work for my side sleeping, I found the Pillow Cube (bought on sale) was a good shape but wasn't supportive enough. So, I bought a generic 5 inch tall ~2'x2' foam couch cushion fill replacement for $30, cut it in half, and then scored it so it had more flexibility/breathability. Stuck that in a king size allergy protection pillowcase and been happily using that for months.
