    Just listened to this work on Radio 4's Last Word. So sad that Catherine Ennis has gone from us now. As with her father's legacy her music will live on, and what a wonderful sound she created alongside Liam O'Flynn's pipes.
    Thanks for posting this. Haunting and beautiful.

      I found it very strange that Liam didn't himself make Last Word when he died.

    Extremely moving to see Catherine Ennis playing the organ so sensitively while Liam plays her father's pipes. Beautiful ; made me cry.

    Such a beautiful piece of music, and on those pipes together with the church organ, it can still bring me to tears. I first heared this years ago on the tv documentary when i was in my 20s, so it's also nostalgic now. I later met someone when I was a student, who actually knew Catherine Ennis from university!

    Why all the analysis, this not mathematics, or the sciences, or physics. It's a story of a master, of remembering, of history, of love and affection, and finally beautiful tune, that we choose to enjoy or not.
    I really enjoyed it.

    Liam I revere your piping. I never heard your equal. At our own Liam's funeral in May this year - we played your "Still Point" and it gave us great comfort... still does mate...

    Never have I heard church organs alongside Uilleann pipes, and what a pleasure--and all the more poignant that Liam was the giftee of Seamus' pipes--whether or not these are they--and there he is beside his mentor's daughter! Very touching.

      +fingling8 I hadn't imagined that Liam might not be playing the pipes bequeathed to him by Seamus....but you could be right....I prefer to think that they were those pipes.

    @Lisnageeragh Uilleann pipes are tuned according to just tuning. Equal temperment would make your teeth grate every time the piper played a third against the drones... Séamus Ennis's set was pitched below modern standard pitch. Concert pitch sets today are pitched in D whereas his set was in C#.

    Seamus' pipes are not out of tune. They are tuned to the scales which prevailed before ''mean tuning'' became so prevalent in western European music. JS Bach helped to define mean tuning. Scottish bagpipes are still tuned in the ''old'' way to this day. Just sounds out of tune to our pampered modern ears.

      Hi Charlie,
      Séamus’s pipes were, and still are, one of the finest sets of Irish pipes ever made. They possess a beauty of tone that would frighten you and have an equal playing response. His pipes are one of the handful of sets that makers aspire to equal.

    @graineag Thank you for comment and info. How does this work when playing with a moderd accordion or a fiddle? TG

    • @zyke6534
      @zyke6534 5 лет назад

      Lisnageeragh I play the box, and the box can be tricky. The pipes’ tuning can be adjusted to some degree. If the set is in a key other than D, I wouldn’t be able to play with them. But that’s because it’s hard to transpose on my accordion. If I’m out of tune, forget it...
      Accordions have to be tuned by a professional. It’s something easier said then done. Pipes are tricky with tuning too, but they can be adjusted to some degree. Where their pitch sits depends on things like humidity and such.
