  • A summer cold can bring more misery than other kinds of colds. After working in the garden, I choose some herbs to make a remedy to stop the sniffles. Information in the box below.
    If you are interested in using herbs for your health consider looking at the Hawthorn Academy -www.danusirish... or doing my Introduction to Herbal Medicine course www.danusirish...
    You might like to get started with my little herb books, The Weed Handbooks

    Tea Recipe - For the beginning of a summer cold, some sniffles and sneezes, I took a small handful, about 2 teaspsoons of the following fresh herbs:
    Thyme - (Thymus vulgaris) anti-viral, anti-microbial, expectorant
    Catnip - (Nepata cataria) also known as Catmint - diaphoretic and astringent
    Wild Marjoram - (Origanum vulgare) - diaphoretic, antiseptic, expectorant
    I chopped up the herbs finely til they resembled tea leaves and infused them in hot water just off the boil. After 15 minutes of infusing, I drank a cup of this tea and finished off the pot during the rest of the afternoon. The cold was nipped in the bud and didn't develop.
    Thanks for watching! Stay well xx

    Oh Danu, I'm so sorry about your hen. I also have a Black Australorp named Miss Tilly, and although she isn't laying anymore she's a joy to have around...she's the equivalent of a "boss mare" in a herd of horses. I hurt when they pass away. Keep warm, rest and keep enjoying those beautiful herbal teas. You will be restored in no time!

    Nice to see what you're doing around the place. You're a good month ahead of what is happening here as far as spring goes. Generally fruit, apples, plums, pears, cherries, etc. start blooming mid-May here. I do have pea seed and some potatoes in the ground now as well as a number of other vegetable varieties, spinach, broccoli, etc., seeded in rows. I love this time of year. It seems there is hope in the air once spring arrives. The other day I opened up a water box, a broken pipe needs repair, to find three rather dormant garden snakes curled up. I carefully moved those snakes to a spot along the garden fence since I doubt if they could have slithered out of the deep wooden box where they spent the winter. - - - Seeing you plant beans already is marvelous. Here we don't plant beans and squash out in the garden until mid-May. Hopefully this year May will be milder and less rainy than it was last year. Fruit crops here weren't the best due to cool wet May weather last year. - - - Like you I'm using those same herbs, they grow in my garden and yard, as you for medicinal tea. Out in the garden I've been digging up nettle roots, dandelion roots, washing them off, then drying those roots over the wood stove which is still burning at least some of the time. - - - Daffodils are just starting to bloom here and soon paper white narcissus will be glorious too. Spring is such a hopeful time. Out in the garden the other day, digging, I could hear swans out on the lake telling swan stories and singing swan songs. Enjoy your spring! Cheers!

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  Год назад

      So interesting how different plants pop up in a different sequence. Are the snakes poisonous? You are right, Spring is such a hopeful positive time. Here in Ireland we will celebrate the beginning of Summer on 1st May, all the trees will be in leaf shortly - it is such a gorgeous time. Good luck with your garden and your herbs xx

    Thank you Terri! Your patch already looks amazing! Sorry you have the sniffles. A couple questions, First, is your liquid feed made only of fermented nettle, or did you add anything else? Also, is brewing a tea the only way to get the benefits of catnip, or simply the best way? Finally, I can tell you from experience that an wigwam-frame style trellis works very, very well for beans and peas, It seems to allow more air in amongst the plants, (it works wonderfully for wild roses and raspberries too😊). Cannot wait to see progress on your new wall. We send our condolences for the loss of your lovely hen, we know how easily we become attached to our 'ladies'.

    • @DanusIrishHerbGarden
      @DanusIrishHerbGarden  Год назад

      Hi Jeff! sometimes I just use Nettles for a liquid feed and sometimes Comfrey and sometimes I use the two together. For Catnip, as my cold was just starting and was just a sniffle, tea is the best way to go. If I had a really bad cold/'flu I would take Catnip as a tincture as a tincture is a stronger medicine. thanks for the advice re wigwam for beans and thanks for the condolences, you are very kind xx

    "Don't cast a clout till t' may's out" it's a good Yorkshire saying refering to the may tree not the month which is out (blossoms) in June.

  • @OldManFerdiad

    In Scotland we say "ne'er cast a clout until May is out", which means don't cast off your vest(s) until you see the hawthorn (May) blossoms out. Keep warm and get well soon, you've got some great herbal allies there.

Would you take us on a tour of your herb garden with what each plant is and if it needs a bigger space ie a raised bed or a tub/pot etc if you are looking for ideas for videos that is💖🦋🌼🐕🐕🐈‍⬛🌱🌿

    I have a long way to go to get herbs growing. With just moving in and onto our property last October, I am now getting my raised beds put together and my herb container together and all out of storage. There was nothing on the property when we bought it. Since then, we have had a house put on, a well and septic system installed. April here is still cool and rainy. I've started tomatoes and leeks. I plan on getting peas started.

    Oh no, sorry to hear about Poppy. It sounds like she had a great life living in your garden. I hope your cold didn’t materialise into anything too bad. Don’t forget to take some rest to help your body recover. I’ve been fending off a cold this week with double doses of fire cider vinegar and a garlic and rosemary chest rub I made back in the winter. See you in next week’s video.

      Poppy had a great life, she was very independent and cheeky and died suddenly so it wasn't dragged out. I am totally fine now - the tea saved me. Your dosing is great choice too. xx

    A wonderful informative vlog. Sorry for little Poppy..I would love a herb garden like yours. We have a little patio and hoping to plant a few herbs in large pots. Would you please do a video on which herbs a good to plant together in the same pot and also the best herbs for various hormonal issues such as insomnia, pms. The sage tea has been great for the night sweats. Thank you

      Hi gill - if you have a patio or a balcony I would put only one herb in each pot as most herbs will grow and grow and try to take over so best to keep them separate. xx

      Great idea 👍🏽 but be mindful, anyone who suffers from epilepsy seizures should avoid rosemary oils, even in shampoo's/room fragrances etc as it can trigger a seizure. My daughter suffers, and I even had to change shampoos, and also had to stop hanging a bunch of bruised rosemary under the bath tap when planning a good old soak 😞 😊
