- A look at the history of Resident Evil's animated movies, discussing the making of this strange corner of RE and how these straight to video films translate the games to in-canon side stories for the hardcore fan. Are they good? Does RE work in animation? How insane do these get? Covering Resident Evil: Executor, Degeneration, Damnation, Vendetta, Infinite Darkness, and Death Island.

Thanks. Maybe I'll need it.
Just so long as I don't become a viewer sandwich.
I love Resident Evil animated films. I know a lot of fans give them shit about being over the top, fanservicy not realistic, but for that reason I love them. Plus most of them have Leon in them, so that give it extra bonus points for me.
Leon is the best
@@mandalorianhunter1 This is the truth
Agree
But where the hell is Billy Coen?
I like Leon but does he really need to be in every movie, even if other characters are there, he has the spotlight the most
It’s the same as Chris being in the games since RE5
The next RE CGI movie should be called: Resident Evil Vacation. It's just Leon having a relaxing vacation. He really needs one
every human character (well, except the bad guys).
I remember watching Degeneration back in high school and I liked it. I can't get enough of Leon and hope we can play as him again in the future timeline.
Man these were able to get my Resident Evil fix that the movies couldn't do.
Residecember Evil is straight up my favorite series on RUclips right now. So exciting.
The scene in *Degeneration* of Claire bitchslapping an evil US senator to the ground lives in my head, forever rent-free. It's also why she's my favorite character in the series, over Leon.
But, seriously, I'm glad these movies exist, especially spending more time with these characters. They may be memorable, but it's rare to see them when they're *not* fighting BOWs so the more downtime with them, the better with the investment imo.
I love the campy poorly plotted action packed animated movies and I’m happy that death island was number one it def took notes from the old movies and just gave people what they wanted and JILL
As inconsequential as that first movie is, something about the texture of the animation from that time is so endearing to me. It registers as more grimey and gruesome even today, and I think the failing of the modern animated movies they release (besides the fact that their plots are still confusing at best), is that they look too smooth
These movies are like weird gifts from Capcom, I love them for what they are.
I like that they get crazy, it lets the b-movie inspired game series become actual b-movies
I remember Syfy airing the first two animated films last year they were decent at best. Awesome video Matt
They're just so entertaining. I have a HUGE soft spot for them
I actually loved degeneration Because it's the only media to have the G virus besides RE2
I have yet to see Infinite Darkness or Dead Island, but at least now I know that Dead Island seems to be just as much dumb fun as Vendetta was, even if the highway fight and Chris and the villain shooting while starfing towards each other in increasingly smaller circles is a monumental achievement in silliness that I don't know if any movie can top.
Oh man I have waited so badly for you to cover these since I saw the letterboxd scores!
I adore these movies.
The movies understand the same thing that the games do and live-action movies don't: There's a unique fun in saving the world over and again.
Love Resident Evil animated films hope they make another series but longer because it’s so much that can be done and so many characters can be explored like Jake, sherry and billy.
Matt I always appreciate your deep dives into the RE franchise especially with the films and this video was no exception.
I think I've only seen the first three CG films a few years ago but ended up enjoying them more than I expected because a lot of comments I'd seen online said that they were bad. They're definitely more for fans of the franchise but I like the over-the-top nature, connectivity to the games and the well-crafted action sequences. I should probably check out the latest one at some point.
I love resident evil vendetta it was really amazing and tons of fun In my opinion.
Is death island the first time Jill and Leon have directly interacted on screen?
Yup
All of these movies have at least been fun to me, but the only thing I remember about Degeneration at this point is its shockingly hilarious blooper reel.
Thanks for the amazing video Matt ❤
Never crossed my mind you would cover these but glad you did.I had such a good time watching vendetta with a mate laughting at the over the topness.I am disappoined that rebbeca and jill meet leon and claire off screen and these movies arent their first meeting huge missed opportunity.
Adding the killswitch tracc from Apocalypse soundtrack 🔥🔥🔥😭😭😭
I don't know what it is about Degeneration but Clare looks like she had SO much work done.
This is the kind of madness I love about the RE franchise. I've seen these animated films several times each, and I couldn't clearly describe what happens in each one. Pure mad shit. And I love it.
love that u added end of heartache in the background
man whne i found out resident evil 2 had end of heartache i just loved that movies sound track even more n the band as well
🥰🥰🥰🥰
Probably the guiltiest pleasure one could have, and that's saying something
I spent so many hours on OG RE4 on PS2!!!!
Personally, after watching both the Live Action films and Degeneration when it first came out. I soured pretty quickly on RE outside of the games. Death Island sounds fun though.
"Secrets, coming , ill be waiting " 🎶.. RE 2 Apocalypse soundtrack. 1st soundtrack i ever owned!! and it's a banger.. The film wasn't, but at least the soundtrack was worthy
Thanks Matt!
13:32 Leon apparently got so drunk he lost all memory of Las Plagas.
I love Resident Evil animated movies!! ❤❤
Degeneration Claire is so beautiful❤ Wish we had more of her in that movie though.
Got to check out Death Island then. I bought the Degeneration DVD way back when but was very disappointed and never gave them another chance after that.
YES! MORE MATT DRAPER R.E. VIDEOS!!
5:15 funny thing is Degeneration actually has a mobile game based off the movie
Honestly, Death Island is definitely one of my top CGI movies for RE. Remember hearing about Degeneration when I was in Highschool. Oh I HAD to watch it. Still love watching it.
I thought it was the worst one
@@albertwesker2316 was it because you were dead by this time?

one thing for sure , leon must keep making appearances in all RE media , i really do hope he comes back in RE9
Does anybody know what this song is that was used at the beginning? That's awesome?
You had me at Leon being #2..
*BUT* You pass the vibe check. So I'll let this slide since you like Jill.
I liked that you went into further details than most other reviews do. So that was neat. Keep it up 🤙
MATT! There was a new movie THIS year!? WITH JILL???
Yes! And it’s now on Netflix!
@@MattDraper oh fuuuuuck! I know what I'm doing when I get home!
I should give some of these movies a look. They seem fun
Imagine Resident Evil live action remake from Anime films be like:
Paul Mescal as Leon S Kennedy
Lauren McQueen as Claire Redfield
Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield
Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine
Sophie Nélisse as Rebecca Chambers
Lily Gao as Ada Wong
The one thing I would have enjoyed seeing happen in Degeneration was Leon hook up with Angela. Sure, there was uncanny valley. But I thought her model was very pretty. Plus she was awfully tough. Also, why no love for Chris?🙁19:53
I really enjoy the animated films. Not perfect, but a lot better than the Anderson efforts.
You're right, Jill needs to appear more often.
*19:51** DON'T YOU MEAN SICK OF LEON! HE'S BEEN ON EVERY CGI MOVIES, ALL 5 OF THEM HUGGING THE LIMELIGHTS EVER SINCE! CHRIS IS ONLY ON 2 OF THEM!*
So? Chris has been in every game since RE5 to the most recent. The movies are not even that important, they’re just fan service filler movies to appeal to fans that hate the live action films
I agree with the ranking
Haven’t seen any of these but I enjoyed the video. 4.5 Jill Sandwiches out of 5.
Ngl
to me Damnation is the best one of the bunch
You know it's bad when even the animated Resident Evil movies are better than the live action movies
i love these films!
Ever thought about covering GUERILLAS by Brahm Revel? , one of the best comic books without the attention it deserves.
I never took Resident Evil too seriously, so these movies were always icing on my cheesecake. Cheesecake, the best kind of cake. It is both cheese and cake....I want some cheesecake.
Why does Claire in the infinite darkness and death island look like pinocchio? Is that their way making her look older or something
These have been a mixed bag, but as far as I remember, they've never been awful.
I love the animated movies
I really want Ethan to be in the next movie. Ethan and Mia are great. I Love them.
But look me in the eye and tell me you don't want to see how far Capcom can push the Ethan's Face gag when they can design the scenes and put new props in.
Ethan is introduced napping with a book over his face. The person has a fish tank at eye level. Ethan with has back to us as he works on computers as that's his job. Ethan talking to someone on the phone as footballs or soccer balls always go by his face at JUST the right moment. Come on, Capcom. Do it.
This would make that movie the most artistically interesting work Capcom has ever produced. You have my support, axe, sword and Chicago Typewriter.
Ethan is trash bro.
What is the song 0:13 used in the opening?
By any chance will you be doing a video on resident evil 8?
Vendetta is easily the best CG movie if only because it gave us the "Goddammit Leon" video. 😂
Anybody remember Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within?
my question is, Why no other animation movie (as good ass) like Gantz: O (2016)!
when I saw that movie, me: dang the animation movie now on next level. now 8 year later: am I missing good animation movie?
Where's the personal folk 1:44
Personally I'd put Death Island on #3 after Vendetta/Damnation simply because of the supposed "super virus" somehow affects the main character slow enough to suffer through that long, cringy villain monologue and be saved by the vaccine yet immediately turned any other NPCs into zombies.
Death Island is the second worst Resident Evil CGI entry after Infinite Darkness
Death island was the best especially for having best character jill valentine
Nah that movie was the most boring of the films (excluding infinite darkness) and Jill was just an edgelord tryhard from RE3R
@apexsmokepacker the movie with the most amout of action was the most boring? Sounds like someone hates jill that's odd lol but enjoy the Leon show Till vendetta
@apexsmokepacker jill who just got done being wesker slave and you expect her to be all smiles ? You don't understand how trauma effect pepole form the sounds of it
@@alicethedragonprincess447
I don’t hate Jill, she’s actually my favorite after Leon and Wesker but I’m not a fan of her RE3R portrayal. She’s an overly tough girlboss with a foul mouth attitude and I feel no worry for her like I did in the original. And death island made her even more unlikeable with how she treats Chris and how she’s basically Alice, and her looking like she did in 1998 when the movie takes place in 2015 was just dumb.
That aside, the movie had terrible pacing and possibly the worst villain in the series, the animation is the most cheapest in these movies and even the action feels dumbed down compared to vendetta (which I dislike too, but it’s arguably more fun than this)
@@alicethedragonprincess447
Except Jill’s trauma was barely even explored, this movie focused too much on trying to copy the avengers
Jill is rude to Chris when all Chris did was trying to have a heart to heart with her
How come no one is asking what the name of that banger song is? Starts at the 01:40 mark
Mono memory - resistant evil 4 save room remix
I quite like Degeneration and Damnation. The rest... happened.
Listen, listen. I am a defender if the Anderson movies. I loved welcome to raccoon city. Fuck I liked the live action RE series on netflix. I have actively been told by my friends that my resident evil opinions will not taken seriously because they boil down to 'fuck you i love all of it'
Even I couldn't get through infinite darkness.
Title of track song please?...
RE:Death Island has Jill in it but she has not aged sense RE3? Yea ok pass. Death Island also takes place in the RE2 remake timeline and not the original timeline like the others.
It’s also a badly paced movie, beginning feels so slow but the second half feels incredibly fast, characters appear out of nowhere with no explanation, there’s no camaraderie and everything looks so cheap and superficial
As much as I enjoyed the movies the animated flicks are way better.
The problem with the animated movies is that they had the tone of the later games, which followed in the action movie foot steps of the live action films, which seemd to forget that Resident Evil is supposed to be horror first and foremost. The games, animated films and live action films all need a hard reset because the focus on over the top action and convoluted plots has gotten ridiculous. There's definitely a place for that, but I'd really like to see RE go back to its roots.
Eyy
yeah Jill Valentine for the win 🙂
I’ve never played any of the games so I didn’t really know any of these characters, outside of zeitgeist references, but man dead island was such a shlock disappointment
They are way better then the live action movie's
I like the cgi movies but I find the "shooting choreography" to be JUST corny. Theres been so many weird shoot outs that it kills all tension for me. The whole cycle of innocent person goes crazy and decides to get revenge is also boring. How about bringing back an actual game villain? They can be killed a final time in a film to avoid messing up cannon. Feature characters that are co-stars like Carlos, Sheva, Barry, or Billy Cohen. I would love a film that explained Billy's story after RE0. Another problem is that the films dont flesh out the characters in any meaningful way. The only film I think that has done anything to define them (which NO ONE seems to acknowledge) is Infinite Darkness. Its the only film that clarifies LEON/CLAIRES view on governmental involvement in bioweapons. Claire believes in transparency and public knowledge and Leon believes in government classification and internal accountability. I dont get an idea of how any other character feels about the larger world from these films. I dont get how so many fans can keep watching these things and be satisfied with the equivalent of watching action figures smash together. Whoopie! Someone did a triple backflip off of a motorcycle while shooting a zombie that THEYVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO DO IN THE GAMES. I just want something that makes the characters feel less static. And Jill makes ZERO sense in Death Island. The only character to have a RE Engine design???? The same haircut after DECADES? Wearing almost the same outfit? And she just GETS OVER whatever her insecurity was out of nowhere. I didnt understand the "point" of that film in the slightest.
As fan of resident evil franchise since childhood started with original resident evil 4 as far I’m concerned story and characters otherwise the animation of resident evil movies far better than live action versions of resident evil and other live action adaptations of video games which is already becoming so overused and done to death overtime
I'm sad to hear what you think about Beast machines. Because I liked it the music. The darker tone, humour wasn't so essential to me. And I think it wraps everything up pretty good at the end
Beast Machines can go suck a lemon
The animated Resident Evil entries have been steadily more and more of a letdown. They can't seem to comprehend most of the characters, and they can't seem to recognize what it is the fans want.
Con-stan-tin? No way that’s how it’s pronounced, right?
Yeah no joke, the Resident Evil animated specials are some of the snorefest things. And where one can see that SOME of the nonsense of the live-action movies had a place.
I like the movies but they are a waste of time. There is no room to explore the characters or their relationship. You have the main plot and thats it. No real backround info about the characters, no private life, no small talk or something. We have known, Leon etc. for years but we never really had time to see them in their private live, their home, family etc. And the story unfortunately repeats itself again and again.
There are bits of interesting things like how they introduced terra save in the first movie and Jills trauma but they do not really go into itand tbh its so annoying that leon ist the main character in EVERY movie. Why not Ada, Wesker, Sherry, Jake or Jill?
PS: rebeccas come back to RE was actually in a stage play.
With all the material from the games it blows my mind that all the movies and animated shows are so horrible.
Where is the Music from 1:27 from ?
