  • Join us as we spend time in Baltimore before making our way down the Delaware Bay to Cape May in thick fog, and lose both our foghorn and radar, before making our way up to New York and can't quite believe it as we sail into this iconic City.

    Having lived here al my life, its so cool to see and feel your genuine excitement sailing under the Varazano Bridge into New York Harbor! The few times I have sailed into the harbor and through the City were amazing experiences for me, and they were only a day sail away. You two are a great team, and I truly enjoy watching your adventures. Thank you for producing top notch sailing videos!

    Glad you guys visited Baltimore and were able to eat some Maryland blue crabs. It looked like you stayed at Anchorage Marina, our boat is a neighboring marina in Fells Point. Unfortunately you are spot on describing our water quality, too much trash and debris in the Inner Harbor and get worse after a heavy rainfall and i is always an eyesore when we have visitors on the boat.

    I sailed from Montreal to NYC then to Europe in 2012. I came back in 2013 and on both occasions, I had the same sentiment as you had, that is I made my dream come true. I anchored one night beside the statue of Liberty and then at the 79' street marina on the Hudson. I congratulate you both for a trip of a lifetime. Cheers., Richard

    Nice to see you go through the Chesapeake - Delaware Bay canal under Delaware's Route 1 cable and Route 9 steel gable bridges into the Delaware river. I could have waved to you if I only knew the timing of your passage as I often fish near these bridges. Look forward to your future sailing adventures. If you ever return to the Delaware bay, may I suggest a stop at Lewes, Delaware opposite Cape May at the mouth of the Delaware bay. Really nice historical town with safe anchorage too.

    The best is yet to come! Long Island Sound is your gateway to New England, and after that the Canadian Maritimes! Delaware Bay and the Jersey Shore are not much fun - basically just to be endured to get to NY and east. Too bad that you didn't have time to see Cape May; it is a pretty special town to spend a day or two ashore. Two places you must absolutely stop at in southern New England are Mystic, CT (Fishers Island Sound) and Newport, RI (Narragansett Bay).

      You can't always tell where someone's anchor is lying by the position of the boat, and motor boats and sailing boats lie differently at anchor so don't usually have the same anchoring tactics. Yes we have a red light at night but it's not that bright in the cockpit!

    Really good to see you both back together on the water again. Baltimore Harbor is disgusting, their sewage plant is way under size for the city and all the "run off" goes right into the harbor. A larger sewage plant is under construction and should take care of much of the problem. Crime in the city is off the charts due to Liberal politicians. You would have enjoyed Cape May, very clean.

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 лет назад

      It was in the pilot book and was the mud bottom consisting of industrial waste build up they were referring to...which sounded extreme hence why we mentioned it! Didn't take it as fact...however, here is an extract from an article brought up on a quick Google search...."The sediment that sits along the harbor floor also contains cancer-causing compounds like PCBs and hexavalent chromium. The contaminants are left over from the days when Baltimore's industrial manufacturers used the harbor water to flush away unwanted waste, chemicals and heavy metals.
      Several experts including Volpitta told The Sun there is an unofficial rule among local members of the scientific community not to disturb the silt along the harbor floor for fear of mobilizing the hazardous toxins and heavy metals."
      🤷‍♀️

    • @markturner4219
      @markturner4219 5 лет назад

      @@sailingsvborabora8712 There is a tar like 'scum' on the top of the harbor in the upper reaches, especially in the Inner Harbor area. There is a designated anchoring area in the Inner Harbor, which is a very nice development with Aquarium, Museums, Restaurants and shops and the old frigate Constellation. It is a shame as it leaves a sticky black residue along your water line which is a pain to get off. The main reason I would use chain rather than rope is because chain doesn't absorb the muck like rope does. However, most of the boats I see on the Bay that are local use rope and I have never heard of any well found rope rode failing due to pickling in the harbor ;-)

    Don't rely on AIS. AIS positioning is very unreliable.
    Why were you proceeding inbound at Ambrose Channel on the outbound side?

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 лет назад

      We never 'rely' on AIS but it is a very useful addition especially in reduced visibility or busy traffic areas. We weren't inside the channel when approaching New York, if that's where you mean, we were outside of it.

    • @masterful7574
      @masterful7574 5 лет назад

      Sailing SV Bora Bora
      How can AIS be useful in reduced visibility when its positioning is questionable? You would be making decisions based upon poor information.
      Why would you proceed just outside the channel on the wrong side when just a little more than 2000 feet north you would be outside the channel but on the inbound side? What you did shows poor judgement and inexperience.

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 лет назад +1

      @@masterful7574 we've always found AIS positioning to be fairly accurate actually, but you should never rely 100% on one thing, especially electronics which can fail, which is why it's a 'useful addition' along side standard navigation tools.
      The reason we were outside the channel is because there is no need for small vessels to be inside a channel designed for large vessels to navigate safely into a busy port, in these circumstances smaller vessels would merely get in the way, so whether we were on the 'wrong side' of the outside of the channel makes no difference whatsoever. Contrary to this being "poor judgement and inexperience" it's actually common practice by experienced sailors.

    • @masterful7574
      @masterful7574 5 лет назад

      Sailing SV Bora Bora
      My unlimited tonnage master and first class pilot license leads me to believe otherwise.

    • @sailingsvborabora8712
      @sailingsvborabora8712  5 лет назад +1

      @@masterful7574 😂 this is pointless as i can't see what point you're trying to make, but we were outside of the channel therefore in open water, every other vessel was doing the same, in all directions! It is a large area of open water, no one was inside the channel except large cargo vessels etc because that's what the channel is designed for. Anyway, thanks for watching.
