While I appreciate Steve-O's desire to be compassionate to those we may feel don't deserve it, he didn't even touch on some of the more heinous sh!t Shane did and has yet to take accountability for. The problem with Shane talking or not talking about his cancellation is that he never addresses anything directly or specifically! He makes stupid jokes and vague references but he's never acknowledged the individual issues with each problematic behavior he was called out for. He won't mention minors or blackface. He intentionally avoids using any specific language about the things he did. He still literally hasn't taken accountability for anything but acts like he's paid his dues. Living in the midwest and often times being one of a handful of black kids in a class does that. Here’s the thing for me, I feel like as middle schoolers, you’re in this weird in between stage of adolescence where you’re slowly getting introduced to adult subjects but at the same time still treated like a kid. I know for me, it felt like I wanted to prove a point that I was “mature” by watching edgy content like Shane’s because it exposed me to the adult themes and made me feel more “grown up” in a sense. Looking back now as an adult, what Shane was promoting on his channel as an ADULT was completely fucked up (some stuff really seemed like alleged grooming). The fact that he wants to blame his CHILD fans like myself who were still growing and figuring themselves out is beyond ignorant and stupid when he was the adult. Can someone please just hold him completely accountable for once in an interview? His child fans are not to blame for his creepy antics.

I don't feel bad for Shane, but as someone with a chronic panic/anxiety disorder his symptoms resonate. If I was him, I would just go to ground with my money and go away. However, the symptoms (if true) make sense to me. My brain makes me feel like I'm dying on the semi-regular.

I'm a picker too and I wanted to ask a question. when I started picking it was something I did usually to comfort me, it became a bad habit that I've had for years now. when I used to cut and didn't have access to blades, I would pick intentionally. obviously, those two situations are different, but isn't the second one still sh? I don't know Shane's circumstance bc plainly I really don't care. but if it matched the same situation could he call himself a self harmer? of course it wouldn't excuse his "jokes" about it. I'm just wondering bc I have scars from picking that I consider sh bc of why I did it.
@@msjkramey while stopping is incredibly difficult, i can def give a lil bit of advice: first things first, regularly cutting and filing down your nails can be very useful cuz it makes it harder to pick. ive found that using the the tough strips bandaids to cover up areas that i frequently pick is useful cuz i can pick at the bandaid instead. tough strips are specifically good cuz theyre strong so you dont have to replace them as often. finding a pair of gloves that fits well and has touch screen compatibility can also be useful cuz it makes it so you cant use your nails. lastly, fidget toys can be very useful. My favorite is the ono roller. its this quiet lil one handed fidget that you can just effortlessly roll in your hand. its a lil expensive for what it is but i still highly recommend it. sorry for the long read, but i hope that any of that advice helps :)
it literally can be for some of us though, I did it due to dysphoria and trauma. purposefully. some people self harm in ways outside of cutting and it’s fucked up how people downplay them just because they aren’t as obviously dangerous as cutting can be.
not trying to discredit what you said at all but it most definitely can be a form of self harm! self harm is an umbrella term therefore anything relating to you harming yourself on purpose can be considered self harm.
I think Shane has become very privileged when it comes to his wealth. The average American would be set for generations with the amount of money he has accumulated. The only likely reason for him saying he can't retire is because his lifestyle has become expensive (just look at the house he lives in.) I think spending time with Jerry Stern might've warped his perception of money and how to spend it.

It seems like the way Shane describes his life, cancellation, & career is an intentional effort to manipulate the people he tells into feeling bad for him. Obviously not a super revolutionary take but it just feels more apparent in this interview. Almost every time Steve-O or his co-host try to test or counter a statement of Shane’s, he proceeds to diminish everything he discusses about doing himself while bringing up a sad impact it had on him even if it’s not entirely true. He tried to hold on to the cutting part as long as he could until he had to admit that it was a fabrication. The more the interview goes on the more it feels Shane ups the stakes by saying something even sadder and continuously bringing up “being cancelled” makes it seem as though he is really trying to make the viewer sad for him. Because outside of this video, there are current and former Shane fans who liked his ‘transparency & relatability’ and if he isn’t regularly reminding people of all his issues and traumas, people would be more inclined to look at the facts right in front of them (ie. the reasons he was ‘cancelled’ to start with). When Shane is constantly bringing up all the awful things he’s been thru in his life, especially to ppl who support him, it feels primarily used as a distraction and when his fans are children that’s very easy for him to do.

The problem with Shane talking or not talking about his cancellation is that he never addresses anything directly or specifically! He makes stupid jokes and vague references but he's never acknowledged the individual issues with each problematic behavior he was called out for. He won't mention minors or blackface. Here’s the thing for me, I feel like as middle schoolers, you’re in this weird in between stage of adolescence where you’re slowly getting introduced to adult subjects but at the same time still treated like a kid. I'm a picker too and I wanted to ask a question. when I started picking it was something I did usually to comfort me, it became a bad habit that I've had for years now. when I used to cut and didn't have access to blades, I would pick intentionally. obviously, those two situations are different, but isn't the second one still sh? I don't know Shane's circumstance bc plainly I really don't care. but if it matched the same situation could he call himself a self harmer? of course it wouldn't excuse his "jokes" about it. I'm just wondering bc I have scars from picking that I consider sh bc of why I did it.
@@msjkramey while stopping is incredibly difficult, i can def give a lil bit of advice:
first things first, regularly cutting and filing down your nails can be very useful cuz it makes it harder to pick.
ive found that using the the tough strips bandaids to cover up areas that i frequently pick is useful cuz i can pick at the bandaid instead. tough strips are specifically good cuz theyre strong so you dont have to replace them as often.
finding a pair of gloves that fits well and has touch screen compatibility can also be useful cuz it makes it so you cant use your nails.
lastly, fidget toys can be very useful. My favorite is the ono roller. its this quiet lil one handed fidget that you can just effortlessly roll in your hand. its a lil expensive for what it is but i still highly recommend it.

god i hate advocating for people to open up more and to talk about feelings its so hard when people like shane exist. i have a lot of anxiety that can also be affected by online communications so in that sense i could relate to what shane was saying when describing his symptoms, but HES TRENDING FOR A REASON. i hate weaponized feelings like this, he's still not owning anything he's done.

abusers consistently take terminology and healing language and warp it for their own usage. it sucks and makes it harder for people trying their hardest to heal. i'm proud of you for going to therapy and being open about it. and im proud of folks who still aren't at that point yet. healing is a process
It seems like the way Shane describes his life, cancellation, & career is an intentional effort to manipulate the people he tells into feeling bad for him. Obviously not a super revolutionary take but it just feels more apparent in this interview. Almost every time Steve-O or his co-host try to test or counter a statement of Shane’s, he proceeds to diminish everything he discusses about doing himself while bringing up a sad impact it had on him even if it’s not entirely true. He tried to hold on to the cutting part as long as he could until he had to admit that it was a fabrication. The more the interview goes on the more it feels Shane ups the stakes by saying something even sadder and continuously bringing up “being cancelled” makes it seem as though he is really trying to make the viewer sad for him. Because outside of this video, there are current and former Shane fans who liked his ‘transparency & relatability’ and if he isn’t regularly reminding people of all his issues and traumas, people would be more inclined to look at the facts right in front of them (ie. the reasons he was ‘cancelled’ to start with). When Shane is constantly bringing up all the awful things he’s been thru in his life, especially to ppl who support him, it feels primarily used as a distraction and when his fans are children that’s very easy for him to do.

I feel like, me personally, if I was, for whatever fucked up reason, in Shane’s position, I literally wouldn’t be able to function knowing that I hurt other people. And especially after the amount of time Shane has had to reflect on why ppl don’t like him and why he was cancelled, it’s just bizarre to me that he still doesn’t GET it. Even if he hadnt sexually harrased or assaulted underage fans, he publicly created an enviroment where sexualising minors was deemed "okay" which could very well have led to others assaulting people or children
i watched the entire interview and the fact it was SPECIFICALLY for him to speak on the terms of his cancellation and had a platform to apologize correctly on and yet STILL after years refused to talk about everything, change the topic each time and took no accountability due to "being nervous" after this long. Steve literally said there’s nothing you could do now that nobody knows and he still just acted dumb about it.
Completely agree on all points about Shane being awful. However, the point about not wanting him to get a “real” physical issue because if his anxiety over twitter is so bad I can’t imagine having a “real” issue… cmon man.. I know ur better than this. As someone with severe anxiety it DOES cause “real” physical issues. Talking down his mental health issues while bringing up your physical issue sounds.. condescending? Idk to those is us who really do struggle and have actually felt how Shane is describing. Again I hate Shane Dawson this isn’t a defense of him. The comment just honestly kinda triggered me.
I alwaysthink about the vitriol he sent toward francesca and thefact that he keeps pretending he never knew he was bad but he was actively called out long before his "cancelation". but he still put out not cool at the same time, showing that he wasnt sorry and learned nothing. and after everything he did to francesca, people still collabed with him and ignored criticism(i unsubbed from Safiyah bc of it). He actively normalized racism, encouraged racists to attack people that spoke out against him, physically harmed children, normalized harm and unsafe s*xual contact with minors, etc. He has hurt so many people and its just so painful that he still has a platform and pretends he is so innocent and was so clueless to the harm he was doing

shane took advantage of those who were "edgy", but those were just vulnerable kids who were hurt, and he made it worse, people found safety in his videos and he took advantage of that.

You have to bring compassion to all parties involved. In this case, the compassion toward children would show that Shane's actions were so bad they're not something to be ignored.

Yeah like there are many forms of self harm and of course they are all bad and should be acknowledged as a serious thing, but that also doesn’t negate the fact that some forms of self harm are much more dangerous than others and are more physically harmful to the person. Idk my psychologist when I was a kid described it as SH, so he might have had the same experience. I disagreed with my psych, personally, but if that is being treated as such in the field, I'm not sure it's our place to make a blanket statement and say it's not.
