  • The church town of Gammelstad in Lulea is a fascinating UNESCO World Heritage Site. Because the north of Sweden is so sparsely populated and most people lived in isolated farmhouses, small towns were constructed around parish churches where farmers could stay for a night or two before attending church, as the church was often located far from their homes. As the modern town grew up a few kilometres away, the original wooden church town still exists in an almost perfect state of preservation. Let's have a closer look!
