@@junramos2002 Fr Josiah has explained that. I would add, the Son of Man could be perceived as a simple man, yet the Holy Spirit when perceived, is unmistakably God. So if using our intellect we reject the Holy Spirit, we are guilty not only of a grave crime but of sheer stupidity. I guess the Apostles when they experienced Christ as God: v.g. Walking on the sea, resurrecting Lazarus, etc. Couldn't deny Him as God.

@@junramos2002 imagine yourself next to the Lord in Kapernaum, what do you see? A young man. But the devils were able to SEE Him as God, yet DISOBEY Him. Blessed those that without SEEING believe. Today UNLESS you experience God INSIDE of you, you are not knowing Him. But even as God is inside of all of us, we do not attempt to enter in ourselves. People talk about Christ and even Icons depict a man, Faith is not some belief, but Trust that leads to obedience to God. When blindly one blasphemes about the Holy Spirit AND continue to blaspheme even AFTER we have known God, then we are making ourselves unforgivable. Hear Father Josiah again

For much of my life I was a terrible blasphemer as an atheist & then as a “spiritual seeker”. Then on Holy Monday of this year (the first time a set foot in an Orthodox Church) I recognized that the Holy Spirit has been calling me to the Church. Every since I have been repenting of all my blasphemies & all the heretical beliefs as I was returning to Christianity. Father bless! If it is blessed I would like to present some additional thoughts from St. Theophylact that I found very helpful in understanding the context and what exactly was being condemned. First of all, St. Theophylact pointed out that while blasphemy against the Son is a catastrophic sin for Orthodox Christians, for a pagan or a Jew to blaspheme the Son does not increase his condemnation because Christ intentionally kept his true identity a secret while on earth, appearing even to commune with prostitutes and tax collectors, therefore for anyone who has never known the Truth and is already polluted by error, they cannot be held liable further for rejecting the Son. But for anyone, even a Jew or a Pagan, to witness great and extraordinary deeds of the Holy Spirit and yet slanders them and attributes them to the Evil One, that will increase their condemnation in the next life unless they repent, and it will be considered the greatest of all sins. So according to St. Theophylact, when Christ said that blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is unforgivable, he does not mean to say that it is unrepentable, he means that it will increase the condemnation of Jews and Pagans in the next life, whereas blasphemy against the Son will not because they did not know any better. Before I read this I was overwhelmed with fear whenever I encountered this passage, but now when I read it it fills me with comfort and hope and reminds me of the incomprehensible mercy and longsuffering of God. I got this from the Explanation of the Gospel of Luke.

This is all just opinion and speculation but I believe the Holy Spirit tries to do a work in us all. The Spirit lives in all true believers but also, I think The Spirit is constantly knocking at the door of the non believers trying to convict them. If they continuously reject and mock the work that is trying to be done in them and others? that is when the unforgivable sin happens, the Spirit leaves their presence…and they are dead. I think this makes sense in the context of God hardening hearts. He doesn’t literally force people to sin and reject Him…he simply removes the only thing capable of reaching them and allowing them to turn away from their flesh.

Everyone claiming to be a Christian when they are not, have spoken against, and have blasphemed the Holy Spirit. Everyone in every church has done this and they will all be cast into the lake of fire on judgement day.
Get away from everything known as the church and read the Bible yourself only.

The rejection of the inspiration of the Holy Spirit leads to spiritual death, indeed. Yet why does it say in this verse rejection of the Son of God does not lead to spiritual death? This part of the verse is what causes confusion, and indeed it is very hard to find an answer to this. All throughout Scripture, it says those who reject Christ are damned, but in this verse it says they will be forgiven? Well, the forgiveness is conditional. Now, the other type which is apparently the unforgiveable type, against the Spirit, this by the same token must also be considered conditional. Then of course we must apply the local and total contexts around this verse, what is the chapter talking about, how do the contents of this chapter in particular relate to other parts of Scripture? So in various other parts of the total scriptures, it clearly says all sins by repentance can be removed and one can be saved. It seems then that perhaps maybe this verse is a textual error, a mistranslation, perhaps? Maybe it was an error from the Lord? Both these things cannot be so, since the Lord and His Word are infallable, perfect, divine. So to conclude, we must accept this verse as basically a paradox, a hard saying, deliberately put the way it has been put to bring a challenge to the mind, to cause great caution, but at the same time it causes a great relief since it says "sins against the Son of God shall be forgiven". The Son and the Holy Spirit are the one God, the Trinity, Who forgives all sins provided we repent according to His Holy Commandments. And to add to this conclusion, to clarify even further, on the judgment day all men shall have at least a few sins for which they did not actively repent, which shall be weighed up by the Lord against that man's repentance, his virtue, his obedience, his holiness, and then the Lord will draw a final verdict, delivering him into the Kingdom or casting him out ("depart from me, I never knew thee"). So ALL MEN are sinners, we say "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner", not "on me, a perfect man", and it is with this type of approach we correct the soul, not with the approach of delusion that we are perfect. That is what the Lord wants, indeed he also wants us to become perfect, but not by our own means, but rather by the means of self-denial so that HE CAN MAKE US perfect. The Lord makes the impossible possible according to what He Himself proclaimed. So with all that said, considering the contexts, let us repent, let us not only be external Christians but also internally Christian, appropriating our souls to the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. And let us not use our pathetic, small rationale to try and interpret this verse about unforgiveable blasphemy of the Holy Spirit and forgiveable blasphemy against Christ - the meaning is put the way it is on purpose by Christ to challenge the rationale, to beckon us to submit to the deeper, spiritual meaning, which in substance is a paradox. The Lord uses paradox to filter out those who are rationalists, who demand logical clarity, and to make those people submit their logical mind to the deeper spiritual meaning, the spiritual warning.

I try my best to be a good man, a good friend, and a good son, but I feel as if something is missing in my heart and soul. I've mourned and cried out for others to stop being mean, but their ugliness has tainted me and I wonder if that is also commiting the same unforgivable sin.

God cares is for our decision of not wanting to be angry or bitter. Youre being tempted. And yes confess these temptations to your priest, confession will give you grace to fight the spiritual fight harder. Its what i can do for now. Not trying to dismiss the wonderful teaching of Fr Josiah. Love Patristic Nectar. However this is a concept I struggle with myself and have for some years.
Quick question Father. What about Matthew 12:32 when it says:
“32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man, it will be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it will not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come.”
It seems like this is saying that someone who says anything against the spirit has no forgiveness. Like to verbally blaspheme or slander. Am I missing or misunderstanding something?
    Please advise Father.

Strong's definition of blaspheme: †βλασφημέω blasphēméō, blas-fay-meh'-o; from G989; to vilify; specially, to speak impiously:-(speak) blaspheme(-er, -mously, -my), defame, rail on, revile, speak evil. I don't see how it then becomes refusal to repent. And if so, at what point is this sin committed? Because at that point there would be no capacity for redemption. Does it occur at the time one receives and understands conviction? A week later? A year later? On one's deathbed? It seems that what was a very specific, almost difficult to commit sin, the church has interpreted as something much broader to the terror of many, and is very possibly adding to what Jesus said:
28 Omein, I say to you that for everything-for the averos (sins) and the Chillul Hashem (Desecration of the Name), whatever blasphemies they may utter-the Bnei Adam will be granted selicha.
29 But whoever commits Chillul Hashem gidduf against the Ruach Hakodesh, can never have selicha, but is guilty of a Chet Olam.
30 For they were saying, He has a ruach hatumah (an unclean spirit). Mark 3:28-30 OJB
The Greek: blasphēmeō eis ho hagios pneuma ( at Blue Letter Bible, don't think I can post a link without the comment being removed).
As to why blaspheming the Holy Spirit won't be forgiven whereas blasphemy of the Son of Man may be (Matthew 12:32), I am convinced that the Holy Spirit is the mother/wife of the Trinity, also called the Spirit of Wisdom. As of old we hear, do anything but don't insult my mother/wife.

Mmm. I have a question. We have no idea if we have committed this unforgivable sin because we can't see it with our own two eyes. Or have the veil parted to see if it's still with us or not. It's quite possible in the spiritual world to follow rules in the real world but the spiritual world could be different mechanics altogether. We might have allowed sin to accumulate Darkness and points negative toward heavenly benefits that an Angel records. But your concept is proven improbable to prove because you cannot depend on feeling alone at all to say you committed the unpardonable sin. I mean. How do you know. Its like you will hear something on something as you pass by a crowd and see physically/spiritually if someones light or darkness is shut off or blazing. Therefore, your arguments are null and invalid. Because they also require evidence that is both prophecy and all knowing that matches more then three people or points or things in the real world to confirm if the person has spiritual abilities, the spirit, or information and if it matches the same account across the board that can be valid as truth. Established fact. Test the spirit to see if they are from God but by three or more people and if they don't match. It's an invalid testimony, joke, fake or the spirit or something else happened or has that produced departure or faded it away.

    New King James Version
Glory to God for His Grace
12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who has enabled me, because He counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry, 13 although I was formerly a blasphemer, a persecutor, and an [a]insolent man; but I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am chief. 16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to [b]God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

      My copy and paste:
That is copied and pasted in every comment section, sometimes without commentary, by Evangelicals who do not rightly interpret Holy Scripture.
That very literalist reading of Matthew 23:9 is dispelled by St. Paul in 1 Corinthians 4:14-17, him calling himself a father of his spiritual children, especially St. Timothy, and saying there are other fathers.
      "Paul’s Paternal Care
14 I do not write these things to shame you, but as my beloved children I warn you. 15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel. 16 Therefore I urge you, imitate me. 17 For this reason I have sent Timothy to you, who is my beloved and faithful son in the Lord, who will remind you of my ways in Christ, as I teach everywhere in every church." (NKJV / OSB NT)
Christ referred in the passage Matthew 23:1-36 to those who *lord* titles over others as the Pharisees did often. It was not just an admonishment against calling a man father, but teachers and rabbis as well (doctors too), which I have never seen Evangelicals object to hardly. It seems to be a double standard as most are anti-Roman Catholic which sadly they lump us in.
The title 'Father' our Presbyters use is not lording a title but it is a spiritual truth as they *are* the fathers of spiritual children just like St. Paul was over his flock. And it can be gathered that indeed St. Timothy and others called St. Paul 'father' as it would have been only respectful, him being their spiritual father to help them grow in the Faith. And that's where we get it from. It is from the very earliest of the Church.
Also, Christ refers in many places to fathers both biological and spiritual (the Old Covenant Patriarchs and Forefathers). Christ does not say when He refers to them as fathers not to call them such as they are *legitimate* fathers of children. It isn't just a haughty title being put on them. They do not lord titles over others as this vocation, fatherhood, is a reality both to biological fathers and spiritual fathers.
If you like to understand this passage in the Holy Scriptures better, this video might help you: ruclips.net/video/j4F-xow3Vzg/видео.html
      May God bless you. ☦
