that is not the point michaelgabriel made. new or not, wear mark be like a cat's asshole on that snare watch the vid and he hits outside that pucker maybe 5 times during the overhead shots@@gone3394
Not sure if you've seen the Tosin + Beato interview but they hit the nail on the head. Prog guys are not 'rockers' and instead are more like nerds... and so, they look like nerds. :P
One really distinctive detail about Matts drumming is his ghost notes. Such control and precision! He said in some video, that they (ghost notes) used to be his weakness, but when he realized it, he practised them until he got to this. Which is awesome.
I like that you actually talk about your point of view, and insert your knowledge during the music. This is how a reaction should be done by music experts.
The cymbals are actually pretty thin, but they're either extra dry or dual (which is extra dry in the center and more traditional in the outer, which almost gives the crashes a china like texture). He also plays an extra thin hammered jazz crash sometimes. They're also quite large which would traditionally lead to more sustain, but the dryness counteracts that as well
Speaking of Matts....the drummer from August Burns Red. Definitely need to check out some of Matt Greiner's isolated play throughs. The entire band is so talented, but Matt is on another level in terms of energy and accuracy.
Glad to hear Matts videos have gktten higher quality. Not that they were bad ☝️ here but his mics and recording techniques have gotten better for these drum playthroughs.
If you like Animals as Leaders and Dirty Loops, you gotta check out GEM. Matt Garstka on drums, Henrik Linder on bass and Eldar Djangirov on piano. Definitely 3 awesome musicians playing together. Would recommended the song torque.
This is probably obvious 😅 but Matt’s changing some parts from the original track; a lot of those fills have added notes, and he’s improvising quite a bit, especially towards the end. What’s crazy is the track is already insanely difficult, but then Matt goes and makes it even more insanely difficult in this video-he’s INCREDIBLE!! My dad and I had the honor of seeing these guys live in 2017, and Matt, Tosin, and Javier are just...wow. P.S. Animals As Leaders are one of my favorite bands, and I am a woman 🤪😂
Really enjoy your videos man. I watch more for the pauses and the breakdowns than anything else. You got my sub! I know the shot is low but could you consider reacting to Aviations by Outliers? It's a longer song but I really think you'd have a field day with it and it would be one of your favorite songs you discovered. Thanks man! Happy new year
My percussion brain is flowing with envy at this man amazing playing. It makes me want yo see you react to the Michael Tran 2017 Xylophone headcam, that really shows all of the work that goes into being a really good percussionist.
the fact that he's playing a very dry sounding drums and cymbals without much overtones means that he has to play it flawlessly because every mistakes would be very obvious in the mix. and he did.
That precise sound with the dry cymbals is really what you're looking for with this kind of music. The same goes for the other instruments, really (like noise gated guitars with the mids turned up etc). Prog mixes can get really busy, so this helps if you want all the info you put in to actually be heard.
4:47 thicker cymbals do usually ring longer when comparing two cymbals of the same size and model but with different weights. Also, he’s playing a couple of meinl byzance dual crashes which are thin and the reason why he’s able to get fast trashy immediate attack from them.
So glad you checked out these guys! I think you should really check out TesseracT, they are AMAZING musicians (Daniel Tompkins is one of my top 10 vocalists) and have many live studio performances, I discovered Animals as Leaders trough them ^^ Keep up the great work, I have followed these videos religiously, you actually give useful and interesting commentary, keep pausing those vids! :D
You have to have to have to check out Night Verses! Tremendous musicians, just a parade of amazing riffs and grooves. Their play-thru videos of Copper Wasp and Earthless are great places to start. The guitarist, Nick DePirro, has also been releasing incredible solo music on Bandcamp every month that is heavy melodic guitar perfection. And their drummer, Aric Improta, is a beast.
Your enthusiasm is great! Another metal drummer to watch is Chris Turner. He has a song called 40 Roll. It's awesome. There are more videos of Matt as well. He's amazing. Thanks for the video. It was actually quite funny lol.
My favourite from the 70's - "Billy Cobham - Drum Solo -France 1972 (Mahavishnu) - RUclips", and more recent "The Aristocrats - Blues Fuckers Drum Solo - RUclips" (Marco Minnemann)
Hey there David 👋 I just wanna say that I really love your reaction videos so much and I can't to watch more! I love how you thoroughly explain your musical knowledge in every single one! It makes me wish you were my music teacher back in high school 😭 But besides all of that, I wanted to recommend a song that I've been so hooked on these past couple months from a pretty underrated band called "Holding Absence" and I think you'd love the track because of all the layers it has if you listen very carefully 🤙 The song is called "Birdcage"
If you ever react to Animals As Leaders again you should watch their full small live set at Brutal Assault, it's composed of 2 or 3 songs (not sure, haven't checked it in a while) and it was simply glorious!
Great reaction mate! Love your videos Dave and team. Definitely, and I say this knowing this may be one of your favourite videos you may ever react to, react to Outliers by Aviations. I only discovered this song and band recently and it is immediately one of my favourite songs of all time - band is also becoming an all time favourite of mine as well. Look forward to your next vids! 🤘
Now give Navene Koperweis - "Pulse of a New Era" a go! Same people made his video as well and funny enough he played in Animals as Leaders before Matt!
If you like Matt, I'd recommend two of my other favourite drummers from the metal world: Navene Koperweis and Alex Rüdinger. I'd say sth like The World Without Us for Navene (the Meinl video for it) and dunno, maybe Where Are The Birds for Rüdi.
If you want more Berklee educated prog-metal, you check out Aviations - Outliers or their play though of Nineties Nine Ties. Absolutely incredible composition and musicianship!
"Slay this drum part like a fuckin' maniac." The End. I think the prodigy part comes with having a "natural" understanding of music. All of it. Prodigys just get that shit, where the rest of us have to really study and study and practice the language and the sheer astrophysics that music is for many of us. haha
Dude you need to react to some nightwish you will not regret it they are a synthonic metal band with an incredible lead vocalist named Floor Jansen. Their songs are structured so beautifully i recommend watching Ghost love score live at Wacken
My new favourite channel. You should check out "Pies en la Tierra" it's a jazz fusion band with Latin American folk music vibes. NO ONE is gonna suggest that one to you. But hey! You are not supposed to bump into jewels.
If you dig rock stars that look like regular guys, you need to check out August Burns Red. A metal band with a twist that's just filled with regular dudes. Check out "Majoring in the Minors." Maybe not their best song, but I feel like you'd appreciate the musicianship.
"Requests: Mac Miller - Ladders, 2009, Good News, and even his Tiny Desk Live Concert PLEASE PLEASE you need to react to him And Matt McGuire and Josh Dun
Animals as leaders are among some of the best musicians I've ever heard. Allow me now to direct your attention to Alex Rudinger. Xenochrist would be a good place to start.
You can tell how good a drummer is by how small the wear mark on their snare is. Matt has so much accuracy.
that is just a new head, all of those drums have new heads.
he referred to another video of matt, I believe it was uploaded by drumeo.@@gone3394

Hearing it come from Tosin, the most rockstar looking dude alive doesnt feel very convincing though LMFAOOO
well now that he's discovered matt, he's gotta get to Chris Turner 40 Rolls xD
Let's limit the suggestions to actual people. We both know Chris Turner is a Cyborg
Bro i legit came down here to say "you should watch 40 roll"
YES
I was literally going to comment the same thing 😂
@@julioemmanuelespina7493 Not to be "that guy" but Matt Smokes Chris out in one drag. Not even close in ability.

I was going to say the same, it's the other way around.....the dryer cymbals are typically thinner.
Speaking of Matts....the drummer from August Burns Red. Definitely need to check out some of Matt Greiner's isolated play throughs. The entire band is so talented, but Matt is on another level in terms of energy and accuracy.
Matt Greiner, Matt Garstka, Matt Halpern, Matt Mingus..
I love Matt Greiner, he's one of my favorite drummers but Garstka is truly next level.
Matt Greiner is an absolute legend in the Metalcore scene!
@@beansley3740 Matt is comfortable in his genre

Well now that you did Matt you gotta see the guitarist, Tosin Abasi. Any video will be good lol
the best thing about this guy is he almost never misses dead center on the snare... pay attention to it
I also noticed that, his precision is other worldly
Definitely need to checkout and of Baard Kolstad's playthroughs...The Sky Is Red, Moon, Rewind...all wonderful videos.
