This is by far the greatest backstory to one of the oldest legends in history.
Its not the oldest. Its only around 500 years old. The cape of good hope didnt exist thousands of years ago.

This video is a complete BS. For starters, The Flying Dutchman was not the official name for the ship, it's just an old sailor slang to call any ship by its nationality just like a human being, judging by the flag it was flying. For example a ship with the St. George's cross would be an "Englishman", Dutch ship was a "Dutchman" etc. It's a sea term. Just like a "man-o-war" is not a real man.
Secondly - Hendrik Van Der Decken. Not only there's no evidence such captain existed, it's not even a real name. "Hendrik van der decken" - on a butchered Dutch language would mean - "Hendrik (a very common Dutch name) of the ship's deck".
So the legend itself is probably originated during the Anglo-Dutch wars of the 17th century, Just like the insult "dutchman" or "son of a dutchman" did. cause that time the Dutch were basically like boogeymen for the opposing side. and later the legend got mixed with a couple of other "ghost ship" sea tales and general sailor superstition.

I feel sorry for the crew. The captain was the one that was the problem. The crew was forced to go along with it. I know they could have called for a mutiny but that could more trouble than its worth.
Agreed,And I honestly feel bad for them because now they never be able to see their families again in life nor in their afterlife unless they get lucky and it was kind of unfair to curse the crew as well because they were trying to convince him to stop.

So, if everyone who sees the ship dies instantly, then who lived to tell the story of the Flying Dutchman? And more importantly, who told the story to the first sailor?
There’s quite a few variations on the legend. The “Everyone who sees it dies.” Is from a later variation.
In some versions of the tale. The angel is replaced with the Devil Himself. And The Captain is either an angry drunkard. Or knows the crews pleas to seek shelter are far too late. There’s also the versions where the crew stages a failed mutiny attempt.

I dunno back in the day, 1600, 1700s I could see myself as a sailor. Maybe a pirate, maybe on a Merchant ship. Maybe the movies and stories glorify it, and I understand how truly rough it woulda been.
But, as an older gentleman, I still feel the appeal of adventure, get out of this everything is at my disposal life.

You can fight fate and nature but sometimes you can win as long you're smart enough to do it and sometimes you cant but you can find ways around the losing part either you win in the process in the long run or not but just as Long you try to keep your people safe by either losing against nature and fate or winning it or dodging it once you have the chance or guessing you can change fate somehow or prove it wrong
