future megasquirt video ideas: after-start table tuning, cranking and warm-up tuning, super fuel economy tuning when cruising in closed loop. good job on the videos, subscribed!
When I was running megasquirt in the past I payed some guy 60 bucks to "make my car run.. better". I wish these videos were out when I was in that situation, I would have saved money, learned a ton (faster!!) and probably would still be using the megasquirt. TL,DR: Greg, don't stop making these videos, they're SO helpful especially for someone that's never been around the MS block. Thumbs up.
dude i don't even own a miata (i intend to next year) but I've watched your whole broke and boosted series and its honestly inspirational. thanks for the quality and informative content. keep it up!!!
your mega squirt videos make it look so easy. I have a bmw e30 that I've planned on boosting just the tuning part I find it very difficult/intimidating . watching this video gave me a little bit more confidence. thanks!
I wanted to stop and thank you for this video. Having recently turbo'ed my Miata I have been exploring tuner studio for a while. This video provided a missing link to how to use logs and tune. THANK YOU!
Thanks for that bit at the end about setting Controller Authority to zero when in Auto Tune. I've been having some strange behavior when driving at high speed in Auto tune, I will check to see what the Fuel Settings/EGO/Controller Auth. is set to. Great stuff!
Have watched these videos again since last time back in 2016 and it is gonna help me sooo much! In the future i'm gonna install a megasquirt in my car and with your tutorials i'm gonna get going so easy. I was really skeptical about tuning and all that but it is actually pretty ''simple'' Thanks!
Greg: Thanks ever so much for all these videos. Really appreciate the common sense way they are put together. Already bidding on Ebay for MS3X. One for the 383 stroker in truck and one for the 1971 Datsun 240Z V8.
Wow tuning has always been a thing I have found hard to find learning materials for. Lots of things I didn't understand though that I do now. You're very helpful and I love how you go about explaining things in a broken-down manner. I hope to one day to perhaps go standalone on my Miata (which has VVT which makes things more complicated I hear, but you also have a VVT motor going in your other Miata, perhaps you can make a video about VVT tuning then?) which would be awesome and the knowledge you shared is good to know. it's unfortunate that standalone ECU's are so expensive though. But it is probably worth it (esp for a boosted car). That said, keep up the good work!
I know I’m 5 years late lol and idk if you still need an ecu, but look up speedy efi, it’s a arduino based ecu plug and play that also uses tuning studio!
There is no reason to set EGO correction to zero. VEAL takes EGO correction into account when doing its calculations. This has been discussed a few times on the Megasquirt forums.
You mentioned in an earlier video that before tuning you should have a good idea of what's going on in your engine. What sort of things should I be looking at or learning about? All the things or just key parts? Thanks for making these videos, I've been trying to wrap my head around tuning for a while but your videos help break it down to make it easier to understand. I'm slowly figuring it out :D
Yeah I mean everything helps really, just knowing what all the parts of the engine do, and the concept of how they work. Cams, fuel injectors, valvetrain, air:fuel ratios, etc. Every time I come across a concept I'm not familiar with, I'm researching it. Which is several times a week. There's just so much to learn!
So do you recommend using auto tune on tunerstudio or Megalog viewer? I’ve installed my refurbished rx8 420cc injectors (real ones) and am having major issues with it driving or idling due to it being majorly lean and rich. I’ve set my req fuel to 6.4 and dead time to 0.8. Any tips? My car was running well on the stock injectors before installed the new ones.
This video is so useful, I appreciate a lot. I’m running a miata in japan with a ms2. Btw for Japanese ppl who don’t understand English is it possible to add auto generated Japanese subtitle? I would have been happy to offer translation but RUclips terminated the function which allowed viewers to corroborate...
The cell weighting is not how much time you've spend in an area as such, more a pointer to how satisfied VEAL is with that area. Green should be right on the money. Also, VEAL takes EGO into consideration.
This video is great. Any tips on adding more fuel off the get go. The car idles fine but I cant even rev the car right now with the 1000cc injectors even though I made the suggested injector changes in megasquirt.
love your megasquirt videos. what megasquirt unit are you using? I am trying to figure out which one to buy for my ls1 t56 swap. I want one that has the auto tune feature just to get me started.
Thank you for the very helpful video. What hardware is needed to data log into tunerstudio using my stock 2016 c7 z06 ecu that I can input an aem afr wideband sensor/gauge kit? I already have a laptop. Is there an odbii connection into a data logger that hooks into a laptop. Any recommendations you could provide would be greatly appreciated
Sorry I'm not sure of the actual tools/software needed, but the cool thing is OBDII cars are wayyyy more capable as far as what the ECU is seeing, so you just need the right interface that can read/record it.
hi and been following your channel also Greg Peter channel great job. anyway when tuning I set eugo setting to 0% and now it follows my afr table too what I entered is this correct? then when turned back on too 10 or 15 will it try to fix my tables to reach stoch ? I'm confused maybe a you can help clear this up for me before it goes boom ..thanks in advance !!
Hey man. Thanks for the videos! Quick question. Do you have a video on the idle air control valve settings? When I press the clutch in pulling up to a red light, sometimes it will shut off because the iac valve can’t keep the RPM’s from dropping too low.
I personally would prefer to run only ignition cut for overboost protection. Because that way, it doesn't skimp out on any fuel that might be needed during an overboost, and it's a little less violent. You just hit overboost and feel a pause of power due to being pig rich, maybe make a fireball at worst. When I ran fuel cut only, hitting overboost was way more violent. imo It makes me wonder if your 1.6 was running fuel cut only when it last overboosted on the dyno. Worth thinking back to.. hmmm, right? o.0 Just ignition cut only seems like the best case scenario to me for OB
Am I actually understanding it correctly with what you're showing in how this tuner studio program for the Mega Squirt is actually dialing in and properly adjusting the AFR's to safe levels on it's own as a program live as you're driving the vehicle? If so,that's pretty sweet! I generally suck with computers and that's one of the main reasons for why the idea of messing around with any aftermarket ECU's kind of makes me nervous. I've heard that this Mega Squirt ECU alone without the basic bolt on parts (intake, header and exhaust.) sometimes can open up even more potential power and torque than what those same bolt ons alone with the stock ECU would do with this engine is stock form.
So, both VE Analyze and Autotune will try to adjust your VE table to approach your AFR table... But how do you know what values in the AFR table are the correct ones? Seeing that 16:1 AFR between 1,100 and 2,000 RPM is a bit scary, I must say... Why is it desirable to take the AFR higher than 14.7:1 at all?
Melody thanks for the reply. I was referring to where you change the Stoichiometric setting since e85 AFR target is 9.8 vs 14.7 for normal gas. This setting makes it easier to tune. fyi, you use a fuel flex sensor if you are going to use 2 different types a fuel. I am now on e85 only with no sensor. Thanks again for your input.
Oh okay! I was actually planning on making a turbo build that was flex fuel so i could use whatever gas was available near me. Not all gas stations in my area have e85. Ive been looking into it a lil and deciding on whether i should get megasquirt or get the fm220 since both support it
Hey Greg i have a question, i'm learning a lot from these Megasquirt videos though i'm not going to tune my car i still have lots to learn, but i do have a question. If i'm going to run Megasquirt or any other stand alone, do i need to run a boost controller, or can i just control the boost through mega squirt? thank you
Well that sucks. I am kind of interested in how you deal with smog checks then but I also can see why sharing that information might not be the best idea.
Hey Greg, if you want a truly free screen capture program with awesome features, look into ShareX. Its made my a developer on Facepunch. very handy, and I believe its open source.
So I just put a vvt in my NA6 and literally just got it running last night and was wondering how I would go about setting up the VVT in tuner studio. I already have everything wired to the ecu just unsure how to go about setting it up. Would I be able to load a 01-05 base map and it have a tune for the vvt or would that be something that would need to be done on the dyno?

Nope no regrets. And maybe, but honestly there aren't very many stock Miata motors that have made it past 300, the parts can only take so much force before failure.
Will you be adding a sensor to the fuel line to detect the percentage of alcohol that is in the fuel or are you going to leave a safe margin on your fuel map?
see now, how to do THAT would have been something to include in the first video of this series, you know when we were going over how to set up idle as opposed to just saying "idle is all about trial and error". What dead times are you running now? I am seeing numbers of 1.4 one some forums but that seems incredibly slow. It is my understanding that as long as your car never needs less fuel than (in this case) 1.4ms of fuel you can set it that way and the worst thing that will happen is that your VE table will be very low (number wise) in the low load/RPM areas. I doubt it's been driven much. The engines are strong, they can take a lot of abuse, but I can guarantee they're running super lean AFR's which will eventually lead to piston death. (If you ever saw the inside of Taylor Ray's engine, that's what high heat.lean conditions can cause).

Vitor Jorge No it does not. That is stuff you will have to mess with yourself to see what works best
VEAL Does compensate for AE, though it does not Tune AE. You can figure out what AE works best for you and leave it on during VEAL without issue.
I've always thought fuel enrichments and EGO wasn't calculated for during VEAL. Thanks a bunch!
Great video can't wait to try it out. Providing nice wires it up correctly. Every e30 guide is 10+ years out of date 😂

I thought that in California after your car is a certain number of years old you no longer need to emission test
Unfortunately they stopped the 25 year rule in 2000; so only cars that are 1975 and older don't require smog tests. Hate it.
Well that sucks. I am kind of interested in how you deal with smog checks then but I also can see why sharing that information might not be the best idea.

So would this be the way to tune in low boost yourself (~4psi) so that when you get to the tuner you can tune for your desired boost?
Lalo Rocha some stock ecu's can run that no problem. Really no need for megasquirt when boost is so low.
cannot believe how Detailed megasquirt is
Is the vtps really needed for a 1991 1.6 ?
Have you heard of me221 ecu ?
It's only needed if you want to use the vtps based features, it's not required just to run MS. Yes I've heard of it.
Hey Greg, still planning to show how to build a BP after this series?
I've been doing quite a bit of behind the scenes stuff on it. That's one thing I don't want to rush. Since this series is pretty much a flop, the VVT build will be starting soon for sure. I've just been researching and collecting parts up to this point.

I doubt it's been driven much. The engines are strong, they can take a lot of abuse, but I can guarantee they're running super lean AFR's which will eventually lead to piston death. (If you ever saw the inside of Taylor Ray's engine, that's what high heat.lean conditions can cause).
bang bang bang
