Just read chapter three of Think Like A Freak, from the authors of Freakonomics. It seems that Kobayashi experimented with different eating techniques leading up to this event. He recorded in spreadsheets how much sleep the night before mattered, how much time eating the buns separately could save, how to eat the buns the fastest, etc. He doubled the previous record because he massively out-thought his competition and thought in creative new ways to eat competitively. Maybe to that extent Joey Chestnut is a better competitive eater than Kobayashi, only in the same sense that Alex Lifeson is a better guitarist that Jimi Hendrix: while it maybe technically true, Lifeson wouldn't've come along without Hendrix paving the way, and Chestnut wouldn't've come along without Kobayashi doing the same
We had Japanese TV Shows called TV Champion in cables in my country. It was a variety shows where they held a competition for extremity in various thing. Those days, eating competition was a hit and they held a lot of them; and Kazutoyo Arai was a star. He won a lot of their competition they finally took him to US to crush Nathan's, and he did. I was very impressed with him. So the next year, I was looking forward to see him crush the competition again and recognized Takeru Kobayashi as just a sidekick boy. Two decades passed but, though vaguely, I could still remember the shock when 'that sidekick boy' started shoving all those hot dogs down in just a blink, completely crushed Arai's record. I was in disbelief at the number of hot dogs and thought he would be sent to hospital for sure. There was a documentary about him a few years later speculating how his body cope with that, as far as I can remember.
I remember watching Amy Stone on both NewSport Television, SportsChannel New York, and "Prime Cuts" on MSG Network,,The Big 10 football preview was produced by SportsChannel Chicago
They seemed to have high hopes for cookie but yet couldn't even get a broze didn't even eat half of what Kobayashi ate shame i think it's just that cookies strats were very lazy like all he said was just got to get into a rhythm yay where did that get him
This was when competitive eating changed forever, thank you Kobayashi
