This is an interesting perspective compared to Persona 5. In Persona 5 the only girl you actually reject is Sumire (and to some extent Haru) since she is the one who confesses to you first.
In all other romantic options Joker is the one who confesses to the girls, and they always accept it. But with the protagonist here the girls are the ones who confess first, giving him the power to reject them or not. Making rejection kind of more painful. But more human I guess.
Some of them also take it better than others. I went with Makoto for my most recent Royal playthrough, and of the PT girls, Ann and Futaba take the platonic route well, while Haru doesn't despite being the second oldest of the group. Like I think every girl in 5 takes rejection well except her.

Oh I did this literally 2 hours ago. I was really hesitating when rejecting her, and like 15 or so minutes I looked at these two posssible options and thought about the girl I want to be with. And I chose Mitsuru after all (tho I need to wait around 1 month to just start SL with her), but next time I replay the game I will certainly romance Yukari. She's kinda the most realistic girl in the entire series and I really like her. It was hard to reject this beauty. Huh, and I also remember how I just looked at screen around 30 minutes when rejecting Haru, twice, man. First, I already was with Makoto, and second, I wanted to romance Sumi. Tho third time I played P5 I romanced Haru immediately, so, Yukari, please wait for me just a little while longer!

Even with the Friend zone route, yukari seems good about it, not seriously hurt or something. She's even taking an effort to get another try when she invites you to go hiking. Guess I'll go this route too until atlus decided to release The Answer as a dlc

Poor girl 😢 I remember the first time I had to friendzone Sumire, it was more heartbreaking for me than for her
On my first playthrough i romanced Yuko, but then I hit rank 9 with yukari, and just hearing her devastated after you essentially turn her down, it hurt. Thankfully I Max social link Yuko, at the same time it feels wrong turning her down. Considering I worked hard to Max my academics and charm social stats because I wanted to pursue the romance options with either yukari or Mitsuru.
Is interesting that if you reject the girls the final rank scene will be different, because if you decide to romance Yukari, the final scene will be in her room.

You can automatically be set to the friendzone route if you don't pick the romance options so basically you don't have to deal with them confessing to you. At least that's what I heard from another player.

No, she's trying to reassure Makoto that she'll be okay even when she feels she's been rejected.
When you're into someone, not knowing if they like you back or not is like someone squeezing your heart out while you wait in anticipation, just one word from your love interest could either make you or break you.
But once their feelings are confirmed, whether the outcome is positive or negative, it's like you're no longer in the dark anymore. At least you clearly know how the other person feels about you and no longer have to stress about it.
But that's not to mean that it doesn't hurt knowing the person you like doesn't like you back or only sees you as a friend. That's why Yukari was trying so hard to keep it together.

I've been on both sides of a situation like that. This is written as Yukari already assuming Makoto is not into her but worrying that he doesn't actually like her as a friend, either. When he confirms he does like her as a friend, she is happy. She hoped he liked her, but wasn't holding her breath and is perfectly content and happpy with them being friends.
This is about as mild a rejection scene as they could have possibly written, unless they wanted to just have Yukari not like Makoto until Makoto says something, which contradicts that Yukari is canonically crushing on him even outside her S. Link.
People find this sad because Yukari is self-concious and because they are self-projecting their own affections for Yukari onto Makoto. That's all.

I’m glad that letting you friendzone the girls since I’m all about loyalty when given the opportunity, the only problem is that they made it so that you’re being ACTIVELY GUILT-TRIPPED into dating them. I wish it would’ve been like the FeMC route where you can gradually set up romance across the SL or keep it platonic to avoid these situations.
Actually you can friendzone them without them having to confess to you, you just have to choose the non-romantic options so that the girl doesn't get the wrong idea or felt led on during their whole social link.

Chihiro's first flag is her rank 5 event. She laid out a hypothetical about her friend and her possible feelings for a guy. Say that she probably is in love is her flag for later.

Reload's romance routes aren't exactly the same as P5. In addition to the final choice forewarned by: "I must choose my words carefully", there is at least one more dialogue line that must be specifically chosen earlier, or else the final choice won't even be prompted.
This varies from link to link, ranging from flirting or raising the topic of romance (without being too pushy), to simply not being an insensitive jerk at a key moment. Some missteps may or may not be salvageable later, but you won't know for sure if you've made a critical mistake until rank 9.
