He is saying if you know your child will be born with severe disabilities don’t bring it in to the already hard, cruel world to suffer for years or possibly decades which will also make the immediate family suffer.

Lol....yeah only if that was the case all the time ...I would say nowadays yeah the case is alot better when determining rather or not your child will have a defect, genetic disorder, disability, etc.. but for many many decades, centuries many parents didn't even know, realize nor did any Doctors or anyone else for that matter...I honestly would say "there is no right or wrong answer to this question as long as there was no evil, wickedness playing in the manner"...

I don’t think he’s saying it quite like that. He’s saying if it’s clear the being can’t survive on their own we shouldn’t push against nature. But we can provide support and whose to say what’s normal anyway?

Yes because that call you take to keep the child is coming out of attachment . And with attachment you tend to take wrong decisions . Also The mother is thinking of herself not the child . So not a good decision.

For all those who got fired with his response ,these abnormalities didnt had any answer in the past so the children didnt survive now with technokogy and science developing they can survive. Now you desire to have a baby and at the same time yoh are dilemma if he is born with abnormalities. If you can give that child a good future go ahead if you are capable go ahead but if you are not capable dont keep that child in a sorry state and let him face this already difficult world.Cause if you love that child you woukdnt be asking this question.Pain and suffering a cow or any animal doesnt just leave his abnormal baby they stay with them untill they can untill nature decide its course.Be responsible cause you desired a baby now you have it take his/her responsibility.Try everything you can to make his / her life easy. And Love them.

Some people might take this specific opinion the wrong way. I dont think he was advocating ending i childs life if they were born mentally handicapped did he? Or if a child was born premature and it would be on incubator for 6 months? I dont believe thats appropriate. As a father if i had child i would have that child and support that child throughout his life and help make it a fullfilling life. That would be my decision.

I think he talked about the fact that if a child or an old man can stay alive only because constantly live in hospital, receiving many medications and injections and there is no treatment for their disease, then this is painful for such a person and family. Therefore, it is necessary to understand that his time has come to die. And more often this situation with the elderly, who spend their last year of life and all the savings in the pursuit of the illusion that they will prolong their life.
And if the child is different from the norm, but can live in a society, and not in a hospital, then parents should not have an abortion.

its not easy for any parent thats for sure but so many people disagree with what he's saying is because we think of death as being a cruel act but we all know its gonna come and its necessary thats why nature does the act. By intervening in nature's actions we are just gonna suffer more. Nobody said taking the right decision is going to be easy.

  • @diskrybe
    @diskrybe 6 лет назад +10

I have been following Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev for some time now. I find what sets him apart is his ability to engage his audience with wit and humor while delivering his particular take on spirituality served with a dash of pragmatism. And like all Hindu Gurus, one is free to take it or leave it depending on how he resonates with the pre-set frequency of your inner strings.
The thing that irritates me more often than any personal disagreement with his views is the stupidity of the questions directed at him. Should rapists be executed? ( Is that not a matter for informed engagement with our judicial system?) What do you think about homosexuality ? ( Why the hell should it matter what he thinks about it? Do you not have a functioning brain?)
In this talk, he answers a question on the "moral dilemma" faced by parents in choosing whether to keep or discard a child found to have a birth defect. In answering that question, he makes some points on how "disability" and "abnormality" are defined that are worthwhile -- but then he strays into uncharted territories of the subjective domain . His comments strike me as based on HIS perceptions of what level of effort is "worth it" -- not on acquaintance with certain human qualities that drive the nurturing instinct.
Actually I take that back. It's not just restricted to humans, as our narcissism deludes us into believing. I was watching camera footage from the Djuma Reserve, of a lioness separated from her six cubs by a herd of elephants. She paces restlessly by the road, for over an hour, until it is safe for her to go back and find her cubs. She eventually crosses the road, and one by one five cubs follow her. The sixth, probably weaker and a straggler, comes to the side of the road after a while but his siblings and mother have vanished into the long grass by then. This baby sits by the side of the road calling hoarsely, over and over again. After a full hour, the mother returns. Grabs him by the scruff of his neck in her jaws and carries him across the road, evidently to join the rest of her babies.
So in this talk, when Sadhguru says that in Nature the weak are ruthlessly weeded out, it is true, up to a point. The biggest open mouth in a nest monopolizes the food. A weak antelope that cannot keep up with the herd is preyed upon. But consider that if this lioness had decided her cub was not fit to survive she would not have returned. As a mother, her instinct dictates that she do everything within her power to help him live. She makes sure the strong ones are safe. And then SHE RETURNS. Guruji condemns the efforts of the neonatal wards to keep babies alive with all manner of tubes and devices "by any means necessary" as benefiting the medical establishment, and not in the best interests of the child. But that is only one aspect of it. He never alludes to, nor acknowledge the force of nature that is motherhood and fatherhood, that drives all manner of creatures to protect and sustain their offspring -- by all means **available to them.**
It would be dangerous for those listening to him to suspend their own judgment and follow his line of thinking like sheep. Because ultimately the decision to keep or terminate a life in the womb or an incubator is between the child's mother and her maker. Nobody else has any business commenting.
The tubes and incubators make certain premature births viable that would not otherwise survive. I know a couple whose daughter was born premature and was in an incubator for a month. She is now a perfectly normal young woman. Should her mother have decided that her baby was going to grow up permanently brain damaged and pull the incubator plug?
In the case of a child born with a handicap Yes of course for a while it involves intense suffering for the parents, more than the child. In some cases the child suffers intensely and that causes pain for the parents. But what I wish Guruji had been able to emphasize is that most of the suffering is not so much on account of the CHILD, because if you are not totally self-absorbed you quickly realize that a child with a disability endows you with abilities and insights and qualities you NEVER would have otherwise developed. The suffering is because of the ignorant, marginalizing and discriminatory ways of OTHERS in the child's life. That is what hurts. Also, if you are constantly comparing your child to so called "normal" children instead of trying to give her as full a life as possible and as many opportunities as possible, then you are suffering because of your selfishness, not because of the child.
My own daughter was born perfectly healthy, and was developing normally until she fell victim to the insane vaccination schedule involving multiple multi-dose vaccines injected simultaneously and was diagnosed with autism at age 3.5. I did not know then that my daughter would progress to become proficient in vocal classical western music to the point of representing her high school at the state level. I did not know that she would participate in piano festivals and win a gold cup. I did not know she would be good at algebra. The neurologist told me that he did not know if she would ever SPEAK !
I also did not know that having achieved all that she did that she would experience a massive setback in middle school, through another mandated vaccine that would make her experience horrific seizures requiring hospitalization and a Russian Roulette of medications whose side effects are almost as horrible as the seizures themselves. You climb, you fall, you fail, you pick yourself up and learn to put one foot in front of the other, and you repeat this for as long as it takes. I cannot think of a sillier waste of time and intellect than Inventing a limited notion of God that satisfies your narrow comfort zone and then and then wondering about whether God is "brutal." God is a concept to be harnessed to elevating oneself, not used as a crutch for one's crippling self-pity.
So Guruji, I respectfully request you to please enlighten your audience about engaging with compassion, empathy and proper information -- with the intellectually and physically challenged individuals whom they may encounter. I would suggest to them to get informed about the individual masked by the disability, rather than simply avoiding or shunning them because they make you uncomfortable., They are not an affliction unless we make them so. They cannot be branded useless any more than a toddler can be deemed useless because he cannot mow your lawn. It is up to the parents and the people around to discover and infuse the disabled individual's life with purpose and help her or him GROW into that purpose.
Society, along with the child's parents, needs to be open and receptive to possibilities for your child and actively pursue them. This will yield much higher dividends than begging for alms from a deity or turning over your thought process to be massaged into a comfortable fit by some spiritual master and handed back to you to wear until it begins to chafe again and you have to run back for a readjustment.
This is not about a lack of faith in God. It is about developing the necessary maturity and inner growth to understand God through what you **give** of yourself, rather than what you **get** for yourself.

Chitra Raman He already mentioned that of course every parent wants to save their child but in today’s world technology has hugely empowered us to save children from all kinds of things and that’s what needs to be toned down. Yes the instinct is there and you gave examples of animals but animals don’t have technology like we do. And asking him questions shouldn’t be seen as stupid because if someone genuinely has a question then he can answer it and it’s up to the questioner to see if his question has been answered. He’s just looking at what would be best for the child so that the child can fully explore the potential of his or her life rather than just worried about surviving. Abortion is something that needs to be looked at case by case and there’s no one given and said rule for everyone.

As a parent of a severely disabled child I find this deeply lacking in insight, clarity & far too simplistic. Expected much better from Sadhguru. Still feel Alan Watts had a far better handle on all things spiritual. He's not completely wrong but the answer is so lacking as not to be worth anything. Read any parent forum and you will soon see the immense value & compassion the world can learn from disabled children. This topic deserves far better than 10minutes of trite. And now I have to stop judging ;)

It is not about lack of compassion, but practicability! When you die, who will take care of your disable child? Are you not afraid of your disable child in the hand of abusing people?? If yes, then how will your child deal with his or her suffering??? One thing that you need to be aware that the number of abusing people is far more than the number of loving people on the earth!

I think sadhguru goes against his own advice here.. "don't talk about things that aren't in your experience".. but people keep pestering him for answers to impossible questions. He's only one man. World is changing, maybe one day the whole human race is moving around with wheels, because the physical body has become obsolete in the way we use it now. Already the world has become more accessible to people with disabilities, both mental and physical, and there are more ways to help. Maybe we evolve in to energy bodies only. When people talk about the right to live, most people talk about the right to suffer, even though they may not realize it.

I think what he says is be pro life, bring the child into the world...but regarding the medical interventions given unnaturally, these may be ironically against life. There are things more than our eyes could see. We maybe seeing heartbeat but is it really a full-pledge life or something made by medical machines? Can this life continue on its own or will just suffer? As a parent will you choose to let this life, your child, suffer for the rest of their lives because of too much unnatural intervention?

I have been following Sadhguru since quite a long time, he is extremely knowledgeable and empathetic but this time I totally disagree with him especially with the part involving premature children and incubators... What do u mean by giving so much effort in raising a child who you are not sure will have a healthy future? Isnt this statement controversial to his own teachings. Why give up on life till the heart is beating? Nobody in this universe can predict the potential a human life holds. Being a doctor myself, I have seen so many critically ill, premature kids, born at 22-23wks living a normal life after the initial care..
If this is to be believed then we as doctors should stop treating patients, "ohh he is old, he will anyway die", "ohh he has cancer, he will die".

No, he is talking abt severe cases. He meant things like down sysndrome is fine. Hole in a heart- alright. In incubators for months is ok. But cases where a child is so severely damaged that it will be on incubators for years and even after that is unable to sustain life and have progress. Its extremely severe cases that he is speaking of. He mentioned its alright to try to make a child at any cost but 'at any cost' shd also have exceptions for severe cases. Cases where you know the child isnt going to lead an independent progressive life at any matter of point. That's what i understand from what he said. Hope my explanation was clear...

Sadguru is talking as if he knows everything. What about the Karma of the handicapped child, his parents? How everything can be explained by one single person. All the Hindu sages who invented the theory of Karma are fools, Sir ji ?? Please come out of this obession of taking the world in your two hands and repairing it just with words.

In the same line of thinking, if anyone goes into coma, that life should be terminated as it cannot support itself? Or for that matter, old folks should be terminated after certain faculties stop working and there is not enough societal support?

My daughter was given that diagnosis at 3mths. This tough decision required "inner knowing" and they decided to keep going, they have a baby still developing perfectly. This inaccurate or preempted diagnosis was harmful and fearful for the parents and foetus. The medical profession need to be more mindful/sensitive to the feelings of patients.

Very often the genetic abnormalities appear after the child's birth. Should such a child then be killed? I am shocked at the advice.

  • @Readingsbylisa

Pathetic question to ask. Why ask this? Those who are planning a baby need to have basic intelligence first of all. Nowadays doctors advise us. They for instance, do a test for Down's Syndrome and if it comes positive they abort the fetus. No questions asked. They only congratulate the parent with positive outcome once this test is negative. People do abort knowing fully well the situation with the fetus. Taking the moral high road will ruin the child's life in future. It is stupid to continue with such a pregnancy knowing completely as to how the child will suffer.....there is no moral dilemma here. Isn't it obvious? Just use your brain. You'll get the answer. Sadhguru is cent percent right here. My gynaecologist told me very clearly......if all goes well .....have the baby. Otherwise MTP is suggested for sure. Luckily all was good with me......and we had a perfect baby boy. What's the point of our education if we aren't capable of making a logical decision for our future generation? Commonsense should be common.

Tarot Diaries by Prasiddhi, Well.... the common sense you are talking about is not as common as it should be :-) Also, doctors are not always right in their predictions/diagnosis as to health of a fetus or a child to be.
Congratulations on you being lucky, giving birth to a healthy child :-)

the question was about morality of ending the life of unhealthy feotus and you talk about what's normal and abnormal and survival of the abnormal.. do u have the balls to address the core issue about the dillema a parent facing when he has to bring such a life into the world..

Puns7733 The only way is to pay for the technology to keep the child alive. Then again, people never asked permission from the child whether or not he/she wants to be born before conceiving do they? Like what Sadhguru said "it's not God that gave you the child it's your own desires(SEX)".

Yes, it is just heartbreaking. He actually cannot answer the question because a child who is born with some kind of malfunction may mean a million things. He is talking about cases which are clearly a lost cause. Sorry for all the parents who suffer this way, I hope this never happens to me.

He said that every child has the right to be born, but if a person has a disease incompatible with life, then one should not create an illusion of his life with the help of constant artificial breathing.
I watched a video about a family during pregnancy know that a child has serious genetic disease that is not compatible with life. They gave birth to a child and took him home where he lived one day with them, they kissed and hugged him, and when he died, they buried him humanely. They did not spend all their savings in order to keep him in the hospital and still he would not have lived more than a year.

WITH REFERENCE TO BIRTH OF A DEFORMED CHILD, THIS BABA OPINES THAT AS PER NATURES LAW THEY WONT SURVIVE AND IN CASE OF DEFECTS THEY DONT DESERVE TO BE BORN.
I ASK A QUESTION TO THIS BABAJI. AS A COROLLARY TO WHAT HE SAID, IMAGINE HE MEETS WITH AN ACCIDENT WHICH MAKES HIM LEAD VEGITATIVE LIFE. WOULD HE LIKE HIS LOVED ONES TO PULL OUT THAT ASPECT OF BELIEF AND FAITH, WHICH SAYS THAT HE WILL COME OUT OF IT?
DIFFICULT QUESTION TO ANSWER. SO LETS NOT BE JUDGEMENTAL. IF YOU FOLLOW HIS OPINION, THAN ALL IMPERFECT ORGANISMS WILL BE EXTERMINATED.

I can't conceive of the mind of any "god" who'd find joy and idly stands by whilst a severely disabled child can only watch with their eyes & keep a heart full of trampled hopes, of never being to able to ride a bicycle nor enjoying the experience thereof that this same child's peers are granted. How utterly soul-destroying it must be. If you have the option & opportunity to make sure you can bring a child to this world, replete with all properly functioning faculties, then you must do so. No living creature can ever find complete joy if imprisoned in a malfunctioning body.
