  • ...Pioneering Comedian Totie Fields Passed Away
Totie Fields is not widely remembered today, but in her time she was a plus-sized comedy star. Describe by the "New York Times" as a "raucous‐voiced nightclub comedienne," Fields played Vegas, made comedy albums and was frequently on TV, in her own specials or taking a spot on the couch on the talk shows that were ubiquitous in the 1970s.
Fields' jokes often centered on her weight, but as this interview with WTVJ's Joe Abrell shows, her acid wit could hit other targets. In this clip she talks about comedy writing and her aversion for football, among other things, and shares a laugh or two with Abrell.

My late Mother used to babysit the stars children when we lived in Las Vegas from 1968-1970. We sat with Totie & Mister Frank Sinatra in the coffee shop at the Riviera and I enjoyed their company and was a huge Sinatra fan, who always called me The Kid. I was 16 then.
Later my Mother ( who was an RN ) told Totie not to have them do surgery on her leg as her system would not take it.
They did the surgery and Totie died soon thereafter.
Rip to a funny and talented lady and man and my Mother.
May they all find happiness in heaven.

My Mom adored her. So did I. I was lucky to see her in live performance in 1977 in Chicago. It was after her amputation. She was fabulous! Gone way too soon.

I was very young when she died and do recall that I felt such sadness when hearing of her death. I loved seeing her on TV, she was loud, brash and funny, but never crude or mean to anyone. I didn’t know much about her except for the daytime talk show appearances and the very funny, entertaining episodes of Tattletales when she was on with her Georgie. Died too young with her last 2-3 years being clouded by health issues.

Little did she know her wish would come true with football now being played on Thursday (NFL network). Thank god she wasn't around when ESPN was created in 1979, 24/7 sports would of really put her over the edge.

This guy is incredibly ignorant and rude to be focusing so much on toties weight. He should have gotten slammed for that. How stupid and embarassing for Totie, although she handles it well.
