  • Professional bass anglers seem to know all the little tricks for making bass fishing better and John Crews is no different with this line choice for topwater. Many anglers don't know which line to use for topwater bass fishing. Choosing braid makes sense for many topwater options so listen to John lay it all out for you.

Great video on top water line options. Thanks for the information, John!
Would you consider making a video on using backing (or no backing) on bait casting reels? Possibly show the process of replacing line on a baitcaster with backing from start to finish? I've toyed with the idea of using smaller diameter braid (20-30 lbs) on my baitcasters but always hear "the line digs and slips on the spool so you need backing".

John Crews Hey John ty for the video I have a question about the vixen what size style and brand treble hook configuration along w the feathered treble do you use personally to get the best action out of your vixen? Any time I switch out my treble hooks on a spook type bait I lose the action and it doesn’t work the way it did previously. Any help would be greatly appreciated ty!

20 lb. Sunline Natural with a loop knot for all topwater except buzzbaits (improved clinch). Frogs 40-60 lb braid (palomar) based on cover/slop. The most important part of topwater fishing is keeping your cadence for a second after a strike and then set the hook.

Sunline xplasma is by far the best braid I have ever used. When he says it's smooth no it is SMOOOOOOTH. I fished sufix 832 and power pro super slick 8 for a long time and love both lines but the xplasma puts them to shame.

What about bugging for panfish. N our river has too many trees n low hanging limbs to b efficient with a fly rod. So wht line is best for throwing like bullet doodle bugs? We've come up with a system where we use 4-6lbs on a spincast n place a piece of rubber worm on the bug hook. The additional weight allows u 2b able to throw an acceptable distance. I've always thought I need the most invisible line, your thoughts? The fish will occasionally strike the line esp right @ dark.

So I see you talking about all of the big and heavily line but my pole says it can only take 10/20 lb like I’m a beginner so I’m not going out to go buy new fishing gear. But how would I use the plopper on my set up I’m trying to either put the correct normal line on or the braided line.

The line weight on you rod is for mono. Braid has a smaller diameter and you are able to go over the line weight on your rod

Would you still go with straight braid on a clearwater Northern lake? Fish seem to be line shy.
