I don't want to start controversy but I have had some CDs scratched by this great transport I have had for more than 2 yrs. Others have noticed this as well. I found out why though just about a week ago and up until then I did not notice any scratches, probably because I did not look closely enough. When inserting a CD the transport can "mis-grab" the CD and the mechanism spins a few times before drawing the CD in. That is when I have noticed the scratches and they are not the same. If there is no "mis-grab", there seem to be no scratches. When there are they are sometimes very light so you can barely see them but sometimes more noticeable, usually in a telltale straight "line" of tiny scratches. I've tried this a few times and it has happened. Not many times but it has. Having said this I am not really worried about it because only major scratches where bits are misread or cannot be read affect playback resulting in drops, skips or non-readable discs. The tiny scratches are not on the data side so do not affect playback and there is no effect on sound. I have played CDs with hundreds of scratches on them (not by the 6000CDT) and compared to non-scratched CDs sound just fine. Lasers can put up with a lot and good error-correction can deal with most scratched CDs anyway, especially the Audiolab transports with the read ahead buffering. I have solved this "scratching" problem though by giving the CD a slight push when inserting. Voila, no "mis-grab" and no scratches. I really enjoy this transport and it pairs beautifully with my Lavry DA11 DAC (it allowed the Lavry DA11 to become a giant killer and vinyl killer and I now have no regrets about selling my JA Michell gyrodec turntable and all my vinyl many years ago) but am thinking of upgrading to the 9000CDT this month because it is on sale for $300 off and then use the 6000CDT as backup and vise versa if either fails. With digital music streaming the CD world may be in trouble. I hope not and players/transports continue to be available. My two cents. Update April 2nd, 2024 - I failed to give the CD a push today and the intake mechanism spun and mis-grabbed the CD, and again, light scratches. I am putting this unit in storage as backup to the 9000CDT which I am picking up on Saturday. Looking forward to it as these are great sounding transports ..... 😃
@@audioarkitekts Maybe that's because you are using such a high-level DAC. Most people, with lower-level DACs, might appreciate the difference it makes. I don't play CDs, but FLACs ripped from them, so I could be wrong, but FWIW, that's my twopence worth...
I have the Cambridge Transport, disappointed will not play all disk without skipping. They do not skip in my car, my 2nd gen Panasonic DVD player, Pioneer Elite DVD player, PS4 and the Bose Latest / discontinued CD w/speakers player
Mike, being a fan of the CD you should seek out a Parasound C/DP-2000 Ultra. If you aren't familiar, they were produced in the late 90s and billed as a CD transport or CD player. They were built like tanks weighing in at 20 lbs. Top loading CD platter with a manually sliding door and you placed a really heavy aluminum puck on the CD. The drive was also belt driven, single ended and balanced outs. I was just getting into DAC's and bought one to pair with an MSB Link DAC to use it as a transport. Couldn't believe the audible difference over a budget CD player I used as a transport. I recall trying it out as a CD player and was equally blown away! It has Burr Brown PCM 1702 R2R DAC chips and the sound was glorious, full bodied, rich, detailed. I miss it so much!
I purchased one in August 2023. It makes my CD's sound incredible compared to the old DVD player I was using as a drive. It does not scratch CD's. Note I have a very good system, a Music Hall integrated amp, and older (but still superb) MSB DAC with powerbase, and Linn Espek Speakers. In fact, it blows my online free music to bits- I cancelled my subcriptions. It is the best investment I have made to date.
I considered this model, but I didn't like the way the slot mechanism handled the CDs. Went with Tascam CD 200BT player/transport. Excellent Teac transport mechanism used in many professional brodcast machines.
I has never scratched any of my CD's. In fact, it has played my older scratched ones --- only once has it failed. I purchased a good amount of used CD's (over 500) to rebuild a collection.
Brilliant player, was gutted I had to return it due to scratches on my discs. Looking at the new 7000cdt due from Audiolab this year, if not going to look at the 9000cdt
I would not recommend the Audiolab 6000CDT. I bought it a year ago and soon discovered that it produced light scratches / lines on every CD I put into it. A quick internet search revealed that I was far from the only one who experienced this. Sure, it probably plays perfectly fine through such superficial scratches. If a CD is played many times, though, it will look pretty terrible after a while. I don’t use the Audiolab anymore.
Unfortunately these use rollers to pull the CD in and out of the mechanism. This alone was the deal breaker when considering this class of CD transports.
Yes, slot loading mechanisms get lots of stick. Somewhat deserved. But from simple evidence, not all are bad regarding scratches and such. I tend to think that the specific implementation of the mech in a given CD player design is important. After the Audiolab I bought a Primare DD15 CD transport. More than double the price, but the Swedish company Primare is known for great engineering. The DD15 also use slot loading, actually a Phillips mech made for car CD players. Never a scratch or line.
I know this was done a year ago but I was thinking as I have Audiolab M-DAC with a Aes connection I’m surprised that Audiolab’s CD Transports don’t have it. Is there a difference between an Aes connection and a coaxial digital connection?
AES is generally better for longer runs and people do say it’s a bit different of a sound signature. I’ve tried it and it sounded about the same as my digital coax.
This machine DOES scratch CDs in exactly the same way the CDQ does. Not all CDs, it depends on where they are manufactured. After 18 months use, I have many CDs that were purchased in that same time period where you can see 'pinch marks' on the outer edges of the CD where the mechanism takes or ejects the CD. One is going to be quick to jump to 'didn't put it in straight' or ' not enough force/too much force used to insert or eject', but this isn't true and I'm knackered from 'doing it perfectly to be rewarded with scuffs'! It doesn't matter how careful you are, with some CDs these Audiolab Slot Loaders are causing damage to certain discs (Japanese discs seem to scuff easy). It's a shame as I thought they sounded great but this is ridiculous! Seeing as this is the 3rd time I've perhaps bought these CDs in my life - I'm not looking to buy them ever again! Looking at the new 7000 series with a Tray! But I'm also looking at the damaged CDs thinking 'Why should I?'
Holo May DAC...wow! My CD player also has digital inputs for the DAC, which is an excellent compromise to a transport + DAC. When I get my broken Meridian G08 fixed I'll play around with using it as a transport, i.e. its DVD-ROM drive and over sampling approach.
Thanks for the review. I have the 6000, bought it a couple of years ago. I like the transport paired to my Aries II DAC with my class D amp and Heritage Special Dynaudio speakers. The player itself has been fine but the remote is quite frankly horrible. I monitored the pulse train of the remote on a scope and sure enough it is horrible and inconsistent! BTW I sent the first one back to Amazon so it's not just one bad remote, now it's two bad remotes that I got with this player. Fix your remotes Audiolab!
Hi mike I brought the Audiolab 6000cdt here in Australia and its great I have it connected to a anthem avm70 processor and mcm525 amp with klipsch 8000f speakers.I also use it with a Schiit modi+ dac and Schiit gjallarhorn amp with klipsch r51m bookshelf speakers.
A little late to the game. I'm considering this cdt. Saw a few videos of this compared to a cheap blu ray player. I would like to see a well built cd player as a transport used as a comparison to the Audiolab 6000. I use a 15 yr old Marantz CD 5003 with a Geshelli lab dac. To my ears it sounds very good. Not sure I would hear any discernible difference. Any thoughts ?

I have found after owning this deck for 18 months that although the sound is up there with the best, the CD exit sometimes does slip and you have to pull the CD out manually. No big thing but I just wonder if eventually the disks won't come out at all.
I bought the Primare DD15 after I experienced that the Audiolab 6000CDT scratched the CDs. I haven´t done an audio comparison, so I cannot comment on that. All I can say is that the Primare is a very fine machine, I´m a happy owner.
I got an Audiolab 6000A amp and I need a CD players or transport with SKIP on the front panel. It seems that manufacturers insist on not having this feature on the front panel. Like rocking horse poo! Must be extra cost and after all it's on the remote. I want to get the Audiolab mainly cos it has SKIP on the front panel (I'm not into remotes much and tend to loose them). I lost the remote for my trusty Technics CD player and (of course) NO SKIP ON THE FRONT PANEL! And no remote! And I build speakers and absolutely NEED to have a SKIP feature. Sold! Gunnar order one as soon as I can. It has SKIP on the front panel! I watched this specifically to find out if it had that. 😅 👍
The remote is usually the first thing I lose so I definitely feel your pain. I miss the days when they put everything on the front. That's probably why I own a vintage CD player lol

So you are recommending buying a CD transport to complete your vinyl system. I don't see how an LP would fit into that little slot. I'm going to stick with my turntable.
This cd transport was at top of my list when looking for a cd transport/ player to add to my Cambridge EVO 75 & lumina ll .But when It was time to make the purchase the Marantz cd 60 looked like a better long term purchase for aesthetics & features. @@tonezou3918 Get a CD transport, period. I upgraded from CD67SE player to this and a Ares II. I tried DVD, Blu ray and CD67SE as transports only using digital out. Also found the optical better than cheap 75 ohm digital coax. Upgraded later to good coax cable.
@@1Hiprascal Yeah, not sure. Most transports of this price have the CD mechanism of 6000CDT, which scratches CDs of a lot of people. I ended up with Rotel CD11 Tribute using it as transport and I couldn't be happier.
i felt that slap...ive been heavy into vinyl but lately because cds are dirt cheap and ive got heaps of them ,some sound great and some not so but my walkman is great for listening late at night before sleeping ,my yamaha cdr 1500 does the business in my main setup cant fault it ...
Does it scratch CDs? Please inform us, because there are A LOT complaints online about this CD transport (or probably all CD transports with such sliding mechanism that swallows CDs).
It did not scratch mine, however I wasn't able to keep this unit, since it was only here for review. The comments about scratches is concerning and had I'd been aware I would have mentioned it in the video. I will reach out to the company for a comment on the situation.
According to my logic(and experience), a CDT should and does make a difference. A DAC is a bit like a narrator reading a text and the transport is their sight. If you are are struggling to read, your narrative skills can't help you and your performance will be affected. If the text is nice and clear, you can give your best.
I dont get it. Why does cd transports have different sound quality. Isn't the it a pure digital signal sender? So it should basically only be the dac/reciever that can do something with the sound?

Over time i found it does scratch CDs albeit very subtly. Finding little scatches on some recently well-played treasured discs, and none on formerly well played ones(on a different machine) I did a test on a sparkling new recorded CDR running it 30x through the machine, and low and behold tiny scratches appeared. Not happy.
Hi Mike, been watching your latest content on cd player’s, and it’s inspired me to revisit my old dusty cd collection 😂 i’ve got the opportunity to pick up one of two vintage cd players, both Roksan, the Kd1 - MkIII or the Kc1 - MkIII. Are you familiar with the vintage Roksan range? Is there a difference sonically or otherwise. Would be a Massive help, can’t find anything comparing the two players. The story of this cdt scratching cd's is just a myth, a perpetuating bs story, I checked many of my favorite albums, they are still in mint condition where vinyl would be threadbare by now... I love my 6000cdt a lot, its bauhaus looks are just lovely, it is a simple machine, no nonsense bells and whistles that get in the way, and it sounds great....
Hi. I love your videos. Did you get a chance to use the 6000cdt with a denafrips ares 2? If so, did they play well together? I recently purchased a Roksan Attessa transport and it has buffering problems with the Ares. Little micro skips every now and then.
It sounds terrific - when it works. But it seems there are issues with power after a couple of years. Mine was great, but it's now as dead as a door-nail. Swapped power cables with the 6000A that it's connected to - still dead - so not a cable/plug issue.
I bought it a year ago as a test to compare it with my complex PC solution. With a little effort and the right digital cable, he clearly distanced them. A Pro-Ject CD Box RS2 T with an external power pack, silver fuse, isolating transformer etc. has been running on my NOS-DAC for six months. That's a different number but for the money the Audiolab is really good. Visit my homepage for more information and pictures.
Good review. Everything is relative. Take anything home, it is the only thing, and it will sound good, except bad speakers. Now, do this, please. In place of that CDT, replace it with an XBox One Series X and a Playstation 5. So many people game, watch movies and play music on that machine. They are marvels of engineering. Test them out. For $500, you have a multimedia machine that does nearly everything you possible want. Since they are an AV machine, you need a monitor or TV to help in its operation.

This has been my main go to CD playing device for 2 years now. No problem on scratched discs. Sounds great to my ears.

Yeah I tested it for several weeks and I didn't have scratches either, perhaps it was a bad batch people got that did that.
This and Cambridge Audio CXC are 2 greatest entry level CD transports on the market. I would love to see a comparison review between the two!

Ive had my 6000 for about 6 months, fantastic unit. There were some issues with the slot load mechanism caused by improper assembly, not the mechanism

Excellent and very important post. That was the main concern I had. I owned a slot loading Creek CD player for a while that made the same scratches.

Very good transport. Good sound, separation, bass control, location.

My gripe about slot-loaders is that they can't handle those old 3-inch CD singles - and adaptor rings are pure unobtanium these days!

This thing scratches all my discs. I've been sitting on it for months useless because Id feel bad selling it.

Try cleaning, vacuuming the face of the loading slot. Use the vacuum's slotted attachment.

How does it compere to the Primare transport you purchased?
Sonically they are very similar, I believe that at this point it comes down to aesthetics. The Primare is very well built and looks a lot better.
Now we have the 900CDT. Should I make an upgrade? Dac is the Audiolab M-DAC +.
One of the best purchase ever made, seriously if you have a good sound system this is what you need to complete with your vinyl setup.

@@tonezou3918 Get a CD transport, period. I upgraded from CD67SE player to this and a Ares II. I tried DVD, Blu ray and CD67SE as transports only using digital out.
Also found the optical better than cheap 75 ohm digital coax. Upgraded later to good coax cable.
@@1Hiprascal Yeah, not sure. Most transports of this price have the CD mechanism of 6000CDT, which scratches CDs of a lot of people. I ended up with Rotel CD11 Tribute using it as transport and I couldn't be happier.

How does this 6000 CDT interact with a completely different amp conception as Advance Acoustic? Should I look into a different CD transport?
i felt that slap...ive been heavy into vinyl but lately because cds are dirt cheap and ive got heaps of them ,some sound great and some not so but my walkman is great for listening late at night before sleeping ,my yamaha cdr 1500 does the business in my main setup cant fault it ...
Does it scratch CDs? Please inform us, because there are A LOT complaints online about this CD transport (or probably all CD transports with such sliding mechanism that swallows CDs).
It did not scratch mine, however I wasn't able to keep this unit, since it was only here for review. The comments about scratches is concerning and had I'd been aware I would have mentioned it in the video. I will reach out to the company for a comment on the situation.
I have the Yamaha AS 801 with built in 32 BUT CD > dac will this be a proper stage to use a CD Transport for ? Kirk
Stay away from slot loading transports. The material that keeps dust from getting into the slot scratches every disc played.
Vacuum the loading slot's face using the vacuum's slotted nozzle attachment
According to my logic(and experience), a CDT should and does make a difference. A DAC is a bit like a narrator reading a text and the transport is their sight. If you are are struggling to read, your narrative skills can't help you and your performance will be affected. If the text is nice and clear, you can give your best.

I dont get it. Why does cd transports have different sound quality. Isn't the it a pure digital signal sender? So it should basically only be the dac/reciever that can do something with the sound?

After inserting a disk 3 times, I saw new scratches!!!
Over time i found it does scratch CDs albeit very subtly. Finding little scatches on some recently well-played treasured discs, and none on formerly well played ones(on a different machine) I did a test on a sparkling new recorded CDR running it 30x through the machine, and low and behold tiny scratches appeared. Not happy.

Hi Mike, been watching your latest content on cd player’s, and it’s inspired me to revisit my old dusty cd collection 😂 i’ve got the opportunity to pick up one of two vintage cd players, both Roksan, the Kd1 - MkIII or the Kc1 - MkIII. Are you familiar with the vintage Roksan range? Is there a difference sonically or otherwise. Would be a Massive help, can’t find anything comparing the two players. The story of this cdt scratching cd's is just a myth, a perpetuating bs story, I checked many of my favorite albums, they are still in mint condition where vinyl would be threadbare by now... I love my 6000cdt a lot, its bauhaus looks are just lovely, it is a simple machine, no nonsense bells and whistles that get in the way, and it sounds great....
Hi. I love your videos. Did you get a chance to use the 6000cdt with a denafrips ares 2? If so, did they play well together? I recently purchased a Roksan Attessa transport and it has buffering problems with the Ares. Little micro skips every now and then.

It sounds terrific - when it works. But it seems there are issues with power after a couple of years. Mine was great, but it's now as dead as a door-nail. Swapped power cables with the 6000A that it's connected to - still dead - so not a cable/plug issue.

I have a hair dryer, a washing machine and a pocket calculator, and to be honest, none of them scratch my CD-s...
I bought it a year ago as a test to compare it with my complex PC solution. With a little effort and the right digital cable, he clearly distanced them. A Pro-Ject CD Box RS2 T with an external power pack, silver fuse, isolating transformer etc. has been running on my NOS-DAC for six months. Good review. Everything is relative. Take anything home, it is the only thing, and it will sound good, except bad speakers. Now, do this, please. In place of that CDT, replace it with an XBox One Series X and a Playstation 5. So many people game, watch movies and play music on that machine. They are marvels of engineering. Test them out. For $500, you have a multimedia machine that does nearly everything you possible want. Since they are an AV machine, you need a monitor or TV to help in its operation.

On the other hand, maybe having fewer factors too deal with in a CD transport just means that manufacturers can charge more while providing less.
Could be a possibility, I wouldn't rule anything out in this industry. I have seen many questionable products and really high prices. 😳
The "digital" signal is still a modulated voltage - so there are many things that can make a transport sound different.
