I think its a shame merril and skenes were in the same league bc they both put up roy numbers. The argument for Merril over Skenes in particular this year didnt make any sense bc then essentially a rookie pitcher would never win roy of the year ever again given what Skenes put up.
It makes sense him going to Dodgers. Ohtanis deferred contract + sasaki posting early just means they’ll have the resources to add more pitchers to support what sasaki needs in terms of having a 6 man rotation w a loaded line up. They’ll end up getting Sasaki, either snell or Max fried , w Glasnow, ohtani, and yamamoto.
Dodger fan here, its not that the Dodger fans dont want Soto, but we dont think he is worth 600+ mill that Cohen will probably bid/pay. Its Soto or two or three really good players. Soto is an all world hitter, but he is below average defense and below average baserunning. If you paying that kind of money you need be impactful in all aspects of the game. Even though they have a lot of money there is only so much they are willing to spend and lock up long term. Teo/Burns or Soto? Santander/Fried or Soto? Adamas/Bregman or Soto? these combos would all be shorter term deals as well.
Arraez was a great bargin, but if your gonna pay him bigger bucks then I'm not so sure he is worth it. He hits and thats it. No walks, no power, not much with extra bases no SBs. limited to 1b/dh. Profar is the priority over Arraez.
Nick Canepa wrote a piece in the UT that basically leaned to this notion that an East Coast bias should be accepted as the norm when it comes to the Padres, or for that matter, other MLB teams on the 'Best Coast' because of the time difference. Corbin Carroll, won it last year..Bellinger & Seager wont it back to back, 2016, 2017...Buster Posey won it in 2010..Jason Jennings won it in 2002..and from '92 to '96, 5 DODGERS WON IT (Karros, Piazza, Mondesi, Nomo and Hollandsworth). Now, what do all of those players have in common?...yep!...they all played or play on NL West teams. The last time Padre rookies won, were during the Reagan and Carter administrations. So, no...there is no fuckin' East Coast bias with this RoY BS....But even Stevie Wonder can "see" there is a VERY APPARENT Padre bias. And more specifically, an AJ Preller bias among writers. Its not even up for debate in my mind.
