In early August, We took a trip up to Maine to visit with our favorite farmer friend, Jim Kovelski!
Each year in late spring, Jim travels up to a little town just outside Eastport, Maine, to grow the most delicious, clean & vibrant food you can find. Then in early fall, he packs up & heads down to Florida to repeat the same plan.
Jim does not follow rules, He creates his own evolving adaptations; a mixture of pure refined classic agriculture (the scythe), techniques passed along by elder growers, elements from books that have proven their worth & the intrensic download from living with the land & slowing down enough to read it's own suggestions.
He is able to make an honest living doing this very thing he loves so much. His days bring him joy, purpose, connection & peace. The insights & techniques he has collected are invaluable. He plants, harvests, preps & markets in a way that naturally flows & the whole natural farming process is just waiting to be shared with you.
We have been to visit Jim before, but had never been able to come during the best & most productive time of the year for Jim. Everything is growing, blooming, ripening & the scenery around his camp is pure magic.

Over the last few days, we have shared some of the invaluable video footage we got with Jim, while spending a week visiting with him in Maine during his summer market season. We offer these special highlights as our gift to the growing community who are working together to create an even better grass roots food movement.
Jim has been a pivotal role model of ours since 2011, not long after we first began to grow food. We can truly say that he was a big catalyst for change in our lives & we owe the foundation of our success to Jim's influence. Now it is your turn to spend a week with Jim, at your own pleasure.

Ann Mae lol heck yeah!
Pete Kanaris GreenDreamsFL Talking with him at the Farmers Market is an education in itself. I'd be down for a course
Joseph Hagerty I hear you! The man is wealth to the community. Thanks for the feedback!
This guy needs a video person to make segments so his knowledge gets past along. Master gardeners knowledge should not be lost.
Miss O.P. Agreed. We are fixing to launch a course we filmed with Jim and we are also going back up to Maine to visit/film him this summer.
Watching Jim calms me. He is so down to earth.
The video is very inspiring and educational. It's so therapeutic even just watching it. 👍
This guy is a fountain of knowledge and inspiration! Grateful for the vids from you and the Rhodes sharing Jim with us.
I saw this guy on Justins farm tour. He definitely has a good thing going!! We can learn alot from his system.
Ron Hart yes Jim is a wealth of knowledge! Justin didn't know who Jim was until he came here.
Love to learn from those that are doing it in the real world!
Great video friend. Superb balance of education and relaxing entertainment. That's the secret sauce to keeping the attention of both folks new and old to the hobby. Learning a lot just watching and taking in the vibe. Great closing sequence with the sweeping drone shot and music.

Beautiful video! Great music!
Came here from your other video with Jim. Very informative video. I grow in sand and last year and this year I've been working hard to get my mulching systems in place. I wish I had grass but I'm using free mulch and leaves and home-grown worm castings.
Thank you guys for recording these moments in the garden. Great library of knowledge.
Jim is simply awesome. N that place is breathtaking ❤
I came to see Jim Kovaleski, The Man, The Myth, The Legend.. The Scythe Master.

Thanks Mike! Jim is the man 👊
I have planted some Elephant Garlic earlier this year and it is thriving at the moment. I am in Kissimmee, centra Florida. Crossing my fingers they will continue to do good.

Wow, what a piece of property! and right at the edge of the ocean?! Too awesome!
Awesome been waiting for these videos to come across. Do wish the Florida course was coming out first. Lol. Until than I’ll keep rewatching the current videos and add to my notes. Don’t think we would have these plans for next year if it wasn’t for people like you, Justin, Jim and a few others here on RUclips. Keep up the good work!!
The Lean Homestead I know it's about time! The Florida course will follow shortly behind this one but both should have lots of info to apply for both regions.
Jim is a great gardener there and in central Florida.
I'm in Ocala....How close is Jim ?
Hai thanks again for your video.
Where in central florida
Buy Sell Travel Rocking Homestead He gardens in New Port Richey during the cold weather. He returns to Maine in the Spring.
Inspiring
Thanks Pete & Jim for all the videos and great content ... I live up in Homosassa ... who knew such great things are happening so close ....
Thanks Todd! 👊
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE
Another great video.I love the shadow of the drone in the film, look's good.
Welcome back my dear Sir very beautiful
The seeds or garlic bulbs have to be made dormant and done in frid6for a month or two then brought up to temperature over a few days then you can plant them!
Wish you very long Life.mr....
So beautiful.
I'm no expert on mushrooms but what I remember is that "Lobsters" need to be cut into to confirm the "base" mushroom isn't poisonous; lobsters are a fungus that grows on another fungus.
Wooow very nice So lovely Sir👍👍👍👌👌👌🌷🌹😍
One of best gardener in the world I say cos every where in the world so manny good gardener like Jim , like in China mountain gardener or farmer, japan and Korea too
I love the gatherer/farmer direction! That's the core of our food. Wouldn't it be cool to restore enough land for gatherers to practice that knowledge from a controlled farmer atmosphere.
Here's the trick. Garlic needs 40 nights under 40 degrees Fahrenheit. In the fridge or in the ground🙂
He is inspiring me to be a gardener 😉😉
Opa Loma did you start??
Jim. I heard you refer to Scott Nearing. My partner and I moved from San Francisco to S.Indiana, where is mother Julia lived. She was friends with the Nearings, Scott and Helen. I read some of their works and methods. I now live alone in Medford, OR, and am doing a grass fed Permaculture garden. Having a great time, and truly enjoy your videos and energies. Thanks.
Jim Willeford : need a hand?
Beautiful....
Jim is my favorite and your channel is the best on RUclips:)
Thank you 🙏
Piękny czosnek🤗
So beautiful🌿☀🌱💕💕
WOW! Such an amazing video! You two have such a wonderful back and forth!
Thanks! I've learned so much from Jim also.
Stir-fried garlic scapes, Yum!
when i watch Jim I get fulfilment
it’s like a dream
The other difference is he munched the ones on the hill, that could be another reason the trees didn't last. But these are awesome videos and I love that guys work and yours too.
Rock Hill Farm in Lubec watching.
Absolutely love it!! Absolutely awesome
Great teaser, Pete. 👊🏼👊🏽👊🏻
The trees grow in the Recharge Zones. That is where the rain percolates deep underground. Soil is different in particular doesn't have layers of silt (clay) on surface .See Peter Andrews for more
the Bob Ross of plants
Is ... is that a PawPaw (Left of frame where he's diggin' up Garlic) ?
amazing content
Mr. Virk Media thank you!
Great video! Thanks! Two Questions. 1) Can you use grass clippings in the same way as Jim is using grass? I know you must be aware of not using wet grass clippings, not to compress it too much ect.
2) It it not a problem with the high amount of nitrogen in the grass? The same reason not to put too many greens in the compost.
Thanks :D
All I have access to is grass clippings. I know its not idea because they could have herbicides on them. I have never had any issue and soil tests dont show even trace levels of herbicides in the soil. I use them much the same way Jim uses his fresh grass. Piled high. If they are really really fresh they might get hot but its work perfect and any heat produced has never been an issue. I water almost never and I have never needed additional fertilizer. So other than time, the garden produce I make is basically free. I usually apply a layer twice a year. After I did that for a year my soil had more worms in it than I have ever seem. I have not seen nitrogen levels that are too high in soil tests in five years of doing this.
Hey Pete! Where's that sweet potatoe video Jim was raving about at 7:18 in this vid? I'll check the comments to see if you already mentioned it. Thanks in advance!
my first video was the one in Florida - ❤️ it ! I am also from Maine ! My dream is a small house, gardens and an orchard
* Since he goes from Maine to Florida & back & forth does he ever lose out on a harvest, I. e. have to leave before the last harvest ?
If there's no fertilizer going into that grass you're scything, aren't you strip mining the nutrients out of that soil? I'm sure you'd rather not just throw down NPK but somehow there must be some way to give back
South Africa's teresa love the way you so us all your love fresh veggie I big grower and one day I'll wish to come over learn that's my dream
👍👍👍
I think I could see Canada from there LOL
Michael Ponte you definitely could! That was it on the other side of the water.
Yes, I remember from when Justin was there.
How does Jim manage pests, snails, birds and etc from attacking the crop?
Jim has living soil’s and a very diverse garden. He does nothing for pest control.
So if I got a 50 by 50 garden, how much field space do you think I need to keep that heavily mulched?
I'm in NS. Maine 's little brother.
So, he just uses grass to enrich the soil? But before putting in plants does he dig cut grass into the soil?
id like to ask...if u cut the grass..wont it grow back if raked with roots? hence grow beside ur crops? pls enlighten me.ty
Jim gives me faith in humanity that there isn't some dark ending down some nasty consumerist hole.
Me too Kevin! I love Jim’s philosophy and outlook on life.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL Taking inspiration from him and your channel for sure!
Kevin Faherty that’s awesome!
🙏🐈⬛💗
👍
Why don't they use bamboo mulch?😀
Stratification perhaps?
Who tends his garden in Florida during the Summer if he always in Maine to tend his garden up there during the Summer?
He has some people who help keep an eye and harvest fruit, but it's mostly neglected because it's mass planted with sweet potato and legume species in between them.
@@PeteKanarisGreenDreamsFL Oh, okay.
I lived in a small town for six yrs. and after watching your vids all I can think of is all that yard grass that people rake out to the curb for the city to pick up. what a waste
Freedom Woodgas I've been picking up bagged leaves for the last month. It pains me to think all that organic material ends up at a land fill.
What's growing on, Gavin?
Gavin says hello! He's enjoying starfruit, bananas and mulberries from the farm right now :)
My pastor would say you should be in church on Sunday. Just saying😷
This is the dirt church ⛪️
PISTOL PETE growing FL. style!
Wow Mr. Jim is a really interesting guy and great farmer, however the camera man could really use some practice, felt like I just got off a 13 minute roller coaster ride, almost lost my lunch.😬
Dr. John Fishburg not sure how you are comparing this to a roller coaster ride. The video is a walk through tour of what Jim is doing in Maine. Perhaps you could clarify and provide better feedback? Because I just don’t see it.
Dr. John Fishburg Justin Rhodes channel has a bunch of videos with Jim
Dr. John Fishburg - I had to go back & watch the footage again & watch a few other fellow RUclips vlogger's videos for some comparison. These are not cinematic films with professional filmmakers, by a long shot. We are all just a bunch of amateurs who love sharing our work & world through the lens. Pete has only owned the camera for a couple of months now, so you can bet he's still in the learning curve of it. He wants professional quality, but it takes time to build skill. That doesn't mean he won't be sharing videos in the meantime though. When an opportunity comes up that's worthwhile, we aren't going to nit-pick how smooth the shot is. We are just focused on getting it out there, because it's important. Go ahead & watch Justin Rhodes' videos with Jim - you will find the same style of "action filming": both Pete & Justin have heavy cameras that are mounted on hand-held tripods (Jobi). It is difficult to hold steady every moment from hours on end. Pete does get pretty excited & occasionally moves a bit too fast, but he's been working to slow down & smooth out his movements. I also want to add that the transitions I use in between frames might add to the tilt-a-whirl feel, so I will note it for improvement in future videos. ~Melissa Kanaris
