My mother used to teach in high school in southern Utah and would get what was know as “lost boys”. It was so heartbreaking. These would be the boys born in the fundamentals community who were often seen as “ competition” to the male leaders of the group and would be kicked out at 15~17 they had no education or social skills to speak up. It was so sad. This reminds me a lot of them and what their sisters went through

@maddiemcnugget1076 Mormons they believe in polygamy multiple wives is holy so naturally there isn't enough woman arranged marriages are frequent most of them are in the US are in Utah of course there's better sects of them and different split offs but it's very patriarchal
Edit:the largest branch doesn't practice it anymore. Good for them
@@kellynolen498to be fair majority of Mormons don’t practice polygamy, in fact the church’s governing body frowns upon polygamy. That doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen still, there are several Mormon offshoots that still practice it and mostly exist outside the states, primarily Mexico
In 2023, child marriage is still legal in 42 states. In the last few years alone, children as young at 10 got married off to adults for "religious reasons." It's time to start holding this sick system accountable.
Agreed. Child marriage should have been outlawed decades ago
Why doesn't your comment have more likes?! Child marriage needs to end!
Honestly, call your state representative about it. This should be so uncontroversial that voting against change would be career jeopardizing. Just gotta get somebody to introduce the motion to your state's legislative body... and if it fails, name & shame every rep who voted against it.
If nothing else, America deserves to know who among us stands FOR child marriage.
That's because we care more about religion than children.
Same thing in Azerbaijan. There was a 12y/o that ran away from her parents and married a 32 y/o guy. Its so common, even the signs/billboards in the underground metro says that its not ok.

Rose McGowan said she was raised up in The children of God. Everyone was your parents. Said when you turn 16, they tell you who your biological parents are.
Tbh that just sounds like the air nomads in avatar the last airbender. In the air nomads, nobody really had a traditional family structure and everyone’s raised by the village.
But I can see how this could be terrible in the wrong hands which is clearly going on here. Some parents are VERY creepy with their kids. Like some dads look at their daughters and moms on their sons in a “different than parental love” view point.
Not a bad concept tbf
It's similar to how indiginous and tribal cultures act. Except that the group keeps care of their own and everyone knows who is related to whom. Trying to obscure it completely seems to be part of the way they act to brainwash the kids by having no two people to go to. It also means that adults can approach kids under the pretext of being their parents or family, big red alert for pedophilia.

And marriages with preteens *were not consummated*, as marriage pre-late19th century? (Not sure of dates personally.) is a *transaction of property*, a promise and not simply boning rights as we view it today.
Procreation and consummation of weddings were not happening to children. And since lives were so much more fragile before modern medicine, especially infant mortality rates being as high as 70%, families would need to start having children as early as possible to, yknow, have any real chance at becoming grandparents.
That video of the guy loading a gun explaining how he couldn't cope with what was done to him and others when they were kids, and how there needs to be some justice in the world, and since no one else would do it he was going to have to is absolutely the saddest thing I have ever seen in my life. I don't get why cults never seem to stop at orgies and communal off-grid living. I mean, you're already living a happier life than most with just those two things, so why complicate it with drugs, doomsday prophecies, and child abuse?
Makes me wanna try to start a cult to set a better example for aspiring cult leaders. I can't decide on a central theme, though. Has to be benefical and commonplace...
This comment is sus as fuck
Ahhhhh..... So, a cult pyramid scheme?
You could worship keystone species of plants and animals. Celebrate working ecosystems. Live off grid only to the point of not using any social media, but promote learning and using the scientific method. Make clear rule that kids aren't allowed into orgies, and taking part in orgies is completely voluntary. Men and women are equal and encouraged to decide for themselves... 😬 If people are equal and allowed to think for themselves, it's not really a cult is it?
Yeah... You can't really make a cult unless you opress someone, and when you get unchecked power over someone else, abuse always ends up happening.
I don't understand why they even get to that point. Where's the cults for non-deviant people?
Cults usually attract, or are started by, people who desire to control others. They need to keep it at all costs- so if the happy communal off grid farm, for example, begins to slip and people want to leave, or are interacting too much with the “outside”, said leader has to go to even more extremes (harsh punishments, r*pe, preaching fear and hatred like the imminent end of the world to make people too scared to return to the outside and unable to think for themselves, no democracy allowed so nobody can say they want a new leader, banning all contact with the outside world…) to keep them under control. I minored in psychology and was specifically interested in how cults and religious extremists (and the alt-right who are hand in hand with the religious fundamentalists) operate. It’s extremely sad and twisted.
As a christian these people are pure evil, double evil for using gods words that they "follow" as a scapegoat for sin.
They allowed sin to be a main stay of the cult before it went further off the deep end...

My dad got kicked out of that group! He vehemently opposed when they started getting twisted, but his ex wife stayed in with my half sister. We think she's somewhere in Mexico. 😢 Despite the crookedness of those creeps and the loss of his first family, dad pressed on and was determined to protect his new family from perversion and still pursue truth in the person of Jesus. He never forced anything on us, and I have chosen to follow Jesus (not American churchianity) because of the sufficiency of the evidences of his life and the explanatory capacity of the Bible. I value all you folks, even if you don't agree with me, and I hope (and, yes, pray) nothing but the best for you!
I love that you separate Jesus and his teachings from American Christianity. Those are 2 VERY different things ❤️
@angiespurs5773 thanks. I want to get to the heart of what He said and His followers carried on. I don't think either "progressive Christianity" or "conservative Christianity" has it all right. I'll go with classical/biblical Christianity.
Your father and you are very amazing people, you were hurt by false believers but you didn't let it deter you from the true Jesus
Honestly, respect for finding a way to practice that involves thinking for yourself.
There's sufficient evidence to say Jesus existed, but almost no evidence for anything he ever said or did. I think these should be kept distinct, so evidence Jesus existed isn't confused for evidence he performed miracles, claimed to be God, or rose from the dead.
I do like your attitude though :)
If that's not a guaranteed way to create an atheist, I don't know what is.
Could you imagine being exclusively raised in a cult like setting only to be told "It's all bullshit, go get a job" after you've already given your heart, soul, and entire existence to it?
It's real life examples like this that solidify my stance as an atheist.
As a Christian, I agree, it is incredibly sad when people take advantage of others, and especially when it is kids, I always get so angered when I hear things like this, just at the fact that people can be so selfish and despicable. I do not at all blame people who avoid religion after going through something like this, but I am saddened, even if it turns out my religion is false and that we really are here just because of chance, it still gives me peace of mind, and I believe that it is true, and those who were harmed by cults or religion will not have that same experience. I learned about this cult from an episode of Dateline or Primetime Live. I knew River Phoenix’s family had been living with a cult for a while; halfway into the episode, I realized this was that cult. Eventually, River was mentioned.
I’m not sure how often, I think, every few years, people who were in this cult as children but who managed to escape, get together. Sadly many can no longer join them because the trauma from the abuse led to their deaths through suicide. At these gatherings, they always take time to read the names of all those who can no longer be with them. They include River Phoenix because even though his death was an accidental overdose, they think he was likely using drugs to numb the pain and trauma from the abuse, which reached a level he couldn't handle anymore.
In this episode they made it a point to stress that just because River didn’t make a deliberate choice to end his life, that he died so young and in the manner he did, with a bright future ahead of him, only makes sense in the context of someone suffering from the same level of trauma that did cause others to end their lives.
It finally made River’s death make sense to me, because he was vegan both for animal rights issues and because he cared about what he put into his body. I’d wondered for a long time what made him violate one of his core principles. I think in the 90s, it was harder to know how to get help. He was self-medicating, and often people don't realize this is what they are doing, they don’t recognize that they need to seek help for PTSD.
I went to one of their parties when my friend was briefly involved with them (as The Family International). They used to have a table at the local mall doing face painting and handing out brochures and stuff. I always take religion with a grain of salt, I don't look at it as something divine, I look at is as a sort of moral rulebook of sorts. There are some aspects of certain religions I really like but at the same time they can also come up with some heinous shit, no true god will tell you to pillage a foreign land because it has a different faith. "... the worship of Jesus and pursuit of sex." This is almost antithetical to Christ's message. He did not go about establishing a sex cult; that would have been one of his most spoken against practices.
Why doesn’t the law catch up to the Witnesses or the LDS abusers?
Wtf? Lds? They do anything wrong?
Becareful of false prophets. They come in sheep clothing, but inside they are ravenous wolves.
The lore is deep and canon
Isn't this every hippy commune ever?
No
@@Dr.exsack true. Not all have survivors. Good catch
Try doing some actual research if you want an answer. Your attitude suggests a severe bias.
Apparently from Simon's previous statements about "all religions", stories like this are where he gets his views on Christianity. Any Christian that reads the Bible, would reject this nonsense. It isn't Christianity. It's an example of the thousands of counterfeits. Counterfeits that are good enough to fool Simon, and many more. That's their purpose. Good work, Simon! You're soooo smart! You've identified a single counterfeit, but swallowed the bait they cast.
Oh look, a "no true Scotman" fallacy!
Religion is used as a tool to oppress, control, exploit and/or rob people. Like, all the time. Sure, religion can be used as a way to find "higher meaning" or "true purpose" or something like that, but it is foolish to say that the version of your religion being used in a nasty manipulative way is somehow not still a version of that religion.
The christian bible allows for slavery, bigamy, and other things held in abhorrence by Christians. It prohibits wearing mixed fibres, the consumption of shellfish and other inoffensive things. The biblical god is happy to ruin cities, murder infants and punish the child for the sins of the father. And for all the talk of respecting free will, he hardened Pharohs heart against freeing the children of Israel. The same god commanded the massacre of all adults of an opposing nation, and the taking of the children, notably the female children.
But yes, reading the bible definitely makes you think that God is against bloody violence, rape, and incest (remember Job and his daughters?)
Mainstream Christianity is more subtle, but it can still be harmful.
@@DavidSmith-vr1nbWater can be harmful if misapplied. Your statement is meaningless.
It’s Christianity. You don’t get to tell a cult “you are not really Christian, I don’t claim you and wash my hands of any relationship with you” if you could, all denominations would be calling each other heretics.
Doesn’t mean it’s YOUR fault, it just means they’re believes are rooted/related in yours. It’s not a bad thing. It’s just classification and naming
@@yucol5661 while I do agree with you, historically, the different sects of Christianity _did_ call each other heretics.
Certain sects were actively persecuted and destroyed by the Catholic Church. Or, well, deemed heretics by the Church with that judgement then carrying on into secular court, where heresy was _also_ a crime, but secular courts could sentence someone to death.
There were even "crusades" against certain sects of Christianity in (I think Southern) France!
Joaquin joker dance explains alot.....
It's because of religious freedom that it should be illegal to teach your child from a young age to believe any faith unquestionably. It's that child's right to worship whatever God it wants, not your God just cause you're It's parents
>David Berg
Oi vey!
@@o0Hidden0oHuh?
Did you forget the text after the quote?
David Berg was born and raised in a Christian household to two evangelical Christian parents and his maternal grandfather was a Disciples of Christ minister. Almost like not everyone with a -berg surname is Jewish
@@borisbaranhe’s suggesting that David Berg was Jewish because -Berg is a common part of Jewish surnames, but he was too stupid to Google it cause David Berg’s family had been Christian for at the very least 3 entire generations before he was born. These dumbasses are obsessed with linking every bad person and crime back to Jewish people even when there’s 0 connection
You're telling me David Berg was a Christian? Hmmm...
Wdym?
Yes. Every generation of his family since his great grandparents were ministers, authors and lecturers in the Christian faith. He was raised by two evangelical parents. Any suggestion otherwise is simply not compatible with reality
I was born in this cult. 3rd generation. Parents were borh born into it. They didn't get out until early 2010s.
all this needs is guns, orchestral music and a single deputy, ifykyk
Drugs and religion don't mix, nor are they good individually LMAO!
Also I feel sorry for those kids that where raped-😢
Hooray for religion.
"They devoted themselves to both the worship of Jesus and the pursuit of sex."
"It was not long before the group developed a more sinister undertone."
Mate, it was sinister right from the very beginning. The only way you could consider it an 'undertone' is if you think the word undertone means 'the foundation upon which the group stands'.
I grew up in (another) cult. Even now, aged 40, I struggle with integration and trust. If I as much as hear someone mention God I want to vomit
Literally what Christianity is pretending like this group is somehow an outside factor is crazy. It simply is an accepted with all the other loons

They put sex on the same pedastool as Jesus and therefore making sex a god.
This is a polygod-ed cult and might as well have nothing to do with Christianity especially since Jesus literally don't like that expeditiously
yeah whether they like it or not "normal" religious people give these loonies credibility.
There's an incredible book written by Bexy Cameron, she grew up inside and escaped the cult, became an investigative journalist and went back to study them and other cults.
People who use the name of God to hurt children deserve their own place in the depths of hell.
Wicked False Prophets.
Children of God is also an excellent SWANS album
Where is the Cult of Permaculture gardening, BBQ's and beer?
It was clear to go south as soon as I heard which members the group had.
Well as far as child sex goes it's still rampent in both the christain cult and catholic cult, furthermore christain and catholic leadership not engaging in child sex are constantly trying to cover up every bit of it whenever they can.
the sheer contradiction threw me off for a second bro
Yeah, the lack of an apocolypse was when people thought something wasn't right.
This what my thought! There had to be grown ass adults that originally got sucked into this cult, and those people were perfectly fine with what was happening, but then an apicalypse didnt come and they were like... "hold on a minute now...?"
@@Thoron_of_Netoyou have no idea how some people are easy to manipulate

Nuff said.
The moment I heard a priest was involved I knew exactly where this was going.

There is a diffence between religion and cults started by people who only want to serve their desires
