    Zheng Jie was a big inspiration to my tennis playing, and it sure would be nice if the commentators could take the trouble to pronounce her name even remotely correctly. Serena Williams was just a force of nature though.

    I've got so much respect for Jie Zheng after this. What a match! She played fearlessly and almost pulled it off. The Queen would not be stopped on this day though. Serena has nerves of steel but I love seeing her let her emotions out. This match was so much fun to watch. I don't know if the comments here are about this particular commentator but I didn't see anything problematic in how he spoke about each player. Seemed pretty even keeled to me.

    Am I the only one tired of commentary about the men's tour and male players during women's matches?

    So weird seeing her struggle during this tournament, but she got her confidence and game together as it went on. Then a few weeks later she was untouchable at the Olympics. 😁

    Two constant themes for British tennis commentators-Serena often treated with Disdain including talking up and pulling for her opponents,with an often grudging response to her winners (the commentator
    who treated V&S the best with respect and professionalism and no agenda was John Lloyd) Federer is treated with over the top fawning/praising commentary with sychophantic near fainting endless praise, never heard many say what needs to be done to beat Federer which is definitely a constant theme with Serena.

    One memory from years ago this phlegmy sounding elderly British commentator was calling one of Serena's matches he used the word ominous to discribe her play then ultimately used the word sinister. SMH couldn't believe what I was hearing this is the kind of BS that Serena has faced since she has been a teenager 😒🤨

    • @regulusarcturus
      @regulusarcturus 4 года назад +14

      Yep. The choice of adjectives used to describe Serena is often...questionable.
      She is often described as intimidating. When she raises her voice, she's angry, frustrated or furious. When she's subdued and not playing with the same intensity she is disinterested and so on.
      Now compare that to how other passionate players like Sharapova or Andreescu are described- fierce, competitive, feisty and so on.

    this match was so important to what was to come for Serena's dominance, needed this after losing a tough 1st rd (first & only time in her illustrious career at GS level) against Razzano at RG weeks ago.
    rest is the rebirth of the most dominant athlete any sport has ever seen.
    it's 2020 now, she's far from done. They keep hating, she keeps winning, respect to my GOAT, Serena Jameka Williams.

      @ricobhi 4 года назад +4

      Yeah. They really need to return the "let" policy in this age, where clearly the net didn't make an appreciable difference in the trajectory of the ball. There was no way that Jie was going to return that serve from Serena, nor was it likely that at that speed it only landed where it did because of grazing the net. Both the women and the men with really fast serves would benefit from a revision to the let rule.
