I have a couple of the 6ml which I have purchased, I enjoy Encens Suave, and Parisian Musc. Although on my skin Encens suave becomes quite sweet and vanilla-ambery. they are beautifully done but not always the most unique scent profiles. I don’t mind that, sometimes you just want an approachable fragrance that is really well executed 🤗 Radical rose is suuuper punchy, and a bit headache inducing on me and I wish it wasn’t because I do like it. Lovely to get your thoughts Sam! 😘

My favorites from the brand are Falcon Leather, Santal Austral, Radical Rose, and Neroli Oranger.
I generally hate leather in fragrance as it irritates my nose and gives me a sinus headache. I hate the “new car” smell. However, I really love Falcon Leather!! It’s smooth, a little sweet, very natural, masculine leaning but not overwhelming fragrance.
Santal Austral has a beauuutiful silage!! I’m not in love with the milky almond note if I smell it directly on my skin, but unless my nose is pressed to my skin the scent cloud is amazing.
Radical rose is also amazing in quality, depth, and beauty. I have to be in the mood to wear rose, but this is a beautiful rose that I would wear when I’m longing for the scent of a rose or in a more formal setting. Definitely has a seductive edge from the saffron and patchouli but neither are dominant players.
Neroli Oranger is my favorite natural smelling citrus floral. The neroli isn’t too soapy or sharp. I picture a citrus tree in full bloom on a cooler day on the Mediterranean coast. It’s bright in the opening but has great longevity.
Overall my favorite brand in terms of ingredients and quality. Selfishly, I’m sad that Matiere Premiere is getting the hype because I want it to remain a secret. But the brand deserves the recognition and success.

I've learned to let the fragrance wear me (as opposed to me wearing it) before I decide to buy it. It's true that most fragrances are linear, but other do you evolve, and the top notes can trick into impulse buy. I've also learned not to overwhelm my olfactory sense with trying too many fragrances when visiting stores - only a handful, otherwise I may end up buying something that I'll later realize I dislike bcos my nose played tricks on me.
Would love your take on Ormonde Jayne. Thank you.

i ended up ordering the blotter sample set too, and it is FASCINATING to watch your review and see how different they smelled to you vs. to me! (though there were some similarities, too, a relief TBH).
i live in the US so they had to travel for even longer to me, so who knows, maybe part of it is that. but the biggest difference to me is that both french flower and radical rose smell OVERWHELMINGLY sweet to me. like, syrupy, sickly sweet. :-\ in slightly different ways - in FF it's more fruity, while in RR it's more caramelly - but the sweetness is so powerful, i can barely smell anything floral. by contrast, neroli d'oranger DOES smell convincingly like an orange blossom to me as well, so at the very least it's not just that i'm smelling all their florals differently for some reason.
the other ones that read noticeably different to me, and esp. from their names: falcon leather smelled to me like almost a straight-up incense, no leather at all (which i enjoy, i like incense, lol); and encens suave smelled primarily like a vanillic amber. also, i feel like the descriptions of santal austral and bois d'ebene should have been switched. SA smelled deep and ambery to me, while BdE smelled comparatively paler, almost ashy (yet still aromatic). though at least both were primarily woody! :-D i agree with you about the commonality of cedar across almost all of the fragrances.
anyway, thank you for your honest review here, and in general. really appreciate it in this world of "influencers"!

Its funny that you advise to base a purchase off of the dry down because I have found that to be my exact feelings! I am quite new to the fragrance world and started watching all these popular fragrance accounts that have me trying loads of perfumes. I tried many that have awesome top notes but as they dry down smell relatively the same to me and almost a let down to be honest. It's so easy to be carried away by all these super popular perfumes simply because of the hype. I'm glad that although being a novice I haven't been carried away by the top notes. (pun intended)

Matière Première makes me think of Maison Crivelli (from whom I bought the discovery set). The « épuré » black and white design, the single note interpretation (« Iris this », « Bois that », etc.). It seems well crafted, well designed and technically well achieved. From the MC set, I ended up finding everything fine but failing to feel the spark of love or the enthousiasm. So it’s me being full of prejudices but Matière Première leaves me cold and simply not curious about how does it smell. Shame of me, I know right?
Anyway, thank you for your work Sam. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts process about brands and values from the latest videos. Much love, M.

Hi Sam 😃 fantastic review 👏👏 thank you! 😘
I have bought 6 individual samples kit each 1,5 ML and here is my experience:
📍Parisian Musk - indeed, a Santal 33 LeLabo type, but much better with more prominent cedar note. Not much sillage, longevity on the level of Jo Mlone 😉 so not impressive.
📍Santal Austral - sweet, dry sandal wood and lots of tonka bean remainding me of Fave Deliciuse by Dior (minus vanilla) and Gris Charnel by BDK (just without the depth) Good staying power (7 hours), not much sillage though.
📍Bois Ebene - Yes, lots of patchouli. Reminds me of Patchouli by Reminiscense. Good trial, good staying power. This one projects quite strongly for 6 hours.
📍Encens Suave - powerful! Dark, but clean, sweet benzoin and vanilla. I get some cardamon note of which is no mention 🙄
Love at first sniff!!! 💗 very good performance. Lovely, elegant powdery drydown. Considering buying a full bottle 😎
📍Cologne Cedrat - zesty, fresh, very realistic bergamot plus pepper. So pure, so long lasting. Not even a hint of synthetic citrone notes which I hate 😉 well done!
📍Neroli Oranger - powerhouse combo of orange blossom and bergamot. Veeeryyy long lasting and strongly projecting. Hard to wash off after 10 hours clinging to the skin 😂
All od them very high quality. I gree that all the hype is absolutely justified 👍 Joan

When I see a new brand popping up everywhere with the free stuff, is 90% of the time a red flag, but this brand is one of the few exceptions indeed, very good stuff, my favs are encens suave, rose and cologne cedrat (although this last one, is hard for me to justify the price for a citric fragrance)

I've checked out this brand before. For 100ml for almost £200 I just can't accept the prices of their 6ml samples, why can't they just do a 2ml x however many frags they have discovery set. I see you can buy individual 1.5ml samples on their website for €5 each, but these aren't readily available apart from on their site. It's offputting for me, I do hope they sort out, because other brands at the 200 pricepoint do it.

I think it's clear that their strategy relies on influencers to sell you the full bottles. I would pursue other brands if the price point is off-putting. Diptyque does more unique fragrances for less for example, and they're in the vein of what this brand is trying to be. 🌹Xo Sam

Hey thanks for that. In terms price (and market positioning): I would see MP as very good value. To me I like to compare them to Le Labo. I think le labo are overpriced. MP is a very good option for a new to niche person. The fragrances are not too complex and perform very very well so the price point is really good value. The selection is growing. I think you can't go wrong with MP. All round best value I have seen so far. Personal favourite is crystal saffron and then vanilla powder (compliments galore but a tiny bit screechy if I am honest)

I smelled the whole line at Harrods last time I was in London. The best of the line was Encens Suave but I felt the whole line was essentially top note forward (good for Selfridges/Harrods browsing). Falcon Leather was solid but not close to unique. Encens Suave was very incense heavy, of course, and was the best of the masculines but my wife hated it. Seven Oud was funky up top but dried down quickly to a cedar heavy, basic base. Santal Austral was nice up top but dried down quickly to a cedar basic base like many from this brand. Radical Rose was pushed by the SA hard and my wife did enjoy that.
Overall, I spent more time with the masculine leaning ones but I felt the brand was overly expensive and not worthy of the hype. Felt like another brand hyped due to free bottles but I didn’t buy anything on a trip when I bought a LOT.

Thanks for sharing! That drydown is very cedar heavy, you're right. Not a brand for revolutionary profiles, but I do think they're elegant. And good note on Harrod's - I'll have to try them fully over there. 🌹Xo Sam

Hello Sam ! thank you for your nice review and wise advices 🙂 ."Encens suave" smells like olibano drops when they grill on an essentiel oils burner ... to me it smells like toasted incense. It is beautiful on skin, and it's the best straightforward incense fragrance I've smelled so far. On Matière Première's site you can also get 1.5ml samples at the price of 5€ each ...less expensive per ml than the 6ml (ordered individually) ?! I was underwhelmed by "bois d'ébène", didn't get its facets on me, and "parisian musc" wasn't to my taste. I haven't tested "santal austral", "falcon leather", "cologne cédrat", nor "french flower" (issued just after I received my samples, grrr....), but being a tuberose lover and having heard the reviews I'm contemplating ordering a 3X6ml set with this last one and my 2 favourites: the borderline gourmand "encens suave"(6ml of this type of fragrance will be enough for me), and the luminous and classy "néroli oranger"(good to know with this one: the lasting power is not the worst but certainly not the best either). As you like incense and orange blossom like I do, may I suggest, if you have the opportunity, that you try my lovely "Atlas" from Loewe's Solo range (spanish designer brand)? It's a fresh and clean take on these 2 notes, easy to wear yet not faint, good price for the quality. Bise from Lyon, France 😘 !

I collaborated with them back in 2020 December. They sent me Bois d' Ebene and Encens Sauve bottles and I was blown away by the quality of the work that has gone to creating these perfumes. French Flower smells very similar to Miller Harris Tuberoza. I did not enjoy it at all.

French flower also has a close resemblance with Tuberosa by Le Couvent (JC Ellena). To me it’s a bit thicker and the one from Ellena a tiny bit more towards a milky lymphatic fig.

Encens Suave is VERY BEAST MODE. I wore it to bed and it’s still on. It’s very much vanilla which you didn’t seem to pick up- buttery vanilla and pure frankincence. I own it and enjoy it but I don’t call it a love. I also own Santal Austral and I wore a lot of it this summer though the sandalwood is not really detectable- it’s an interesting scent but not so santal.

Bit of a weird question- do you have synesthesia? You mentioned orange blossom being darker orange and neroli being more of a light green, so I was curious if you mean in your perception or the actual juice.
I have it- mostly relating sounds to colors but scents can have colors too 😂🌈

Testing comes with the product...and in the era of online shopping, I am sorry, but a discovery set at a decent price is a must... Vaguely offended by your comment regarding Americans making split second decisions. Being American myself as well many other Americans I know do indeed take their time to gather information, form their own opinions, etc before committing to a purchase or finalizing a decision on something. In turn I have met people from and in other countries, including ones in the EU, who have hopped on something based solely on first impressions.
