    Looking great Oscar. The 1979 A4 was really good looking, shame it wasn't loco drive though. I'm with you on hard wiring the locos and tenders on these. I did the same long ago on my 9F's and the LMS black five.

    A great video to end 2024 with. My Dublo Mallard - a gift in 1960 has all metal wheels. It went into storage in 1962 only to re- emerge in the 90s. Consequently it is in very good condition. Now on display I have managed to run it on my Marklin m track layout by swapping the ac controller with a dc one! Best wishes for 2025.

    Top work Oscar. I coincidentally the other day purchased a Hornby Railways Mallard, the same as the one you've got there in the BR green. I'd like to rename and number it to 60009 'Union of South Africa'. This video has been very helpful.

    Lovely session. I have the HD two track Golden Fleece. Bought in used condition but immaculate. However it gets tired after a while and slows down. I think the magnet needs a "jolt". Not a fan of the the later Hornby tender driven locos... call me old fashioned, but I think the power should come from the actually locomotive. Still a nice looking thing though.
    Thanks for your efforts as usual... and a Happy New Year to you... all who watch.

    Great running session, the A4's are such an elegant design. I do have a Garter Blue Mallard in the slightly updated loco drive Railroad version otherwise I believe the body and tender are of the same tooling as your Hornby Railways version.

    Great video here Oscar, this is a very well timed video here Oscar because for me most of my recent locomotive additions have been A4s, on Christmas Day which I hope you had a good Christmas I had 2 A4s 2512 Silver Fox and 60008 Dwight D Eisenhower, just before Christmas I had managed to pick up 60009 Union of South Africa and just yesterday I received 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley, 60007/8/9 though are quite special ones as they are part of hornbys Great Gathering range from 2013, great video and running session showing these models Oscar, have a very happy new year.
    Just a quick note you said the chimney on the dublo Mallard was different to Silver King, that is accurate as the dublo model you were looking at today was Mallard which has had a double chimney fitted all its life.
    Keep up the great work Oscar.

    As my dublo 3 rail stock got larger and larger over the years, I found it interesting that more times than now the super details stayed in the boxes.
    I just really started enjoying the presence, sound, look, construction, just everything about the traditional tinplate stock.
    And after the purchase of my first prewar Sir Nigel and acquiring many of the gresley teaks and articulated coaches, there was no going back for me.
    I think in my mind dublo was always a period train, harking back to their prewar introduction and how they were so ahead of their competition, and the trains modelled were still in first rate service.
    With the later super details, EMU'S, plastic wagons etc it felt like future triang(hornby) territory.
    Super details are superb, just for me the full tinplate construction and compromises made to create a robust, fully functional model railway is dublo to a tee :)
    As an aside, as an avid budding train enthusiast in my youth, it puzzled me greatly as to why, when running on the family dublo, the world's fastest steam locomotive, the mighty mallard, repeatedly lost against the speedy Dorchester. I pored through my train books to find reference to this almighty speed king, now presumably the fastest in the world, but couldn't find anything about this particular loco.
    Funny how I used to think that a model trains performance was an exact replica of the real thing, and yet things like undersized driving wheels, 3 coach express trains, and 3 rails never really bothered me.

    A fine display of East Coast Mainline power there with those models Oscar!
    Those Dublo coaches have a beautiful lustre to their maroon paintwork don't they? I think I prefer the Dublo A4 to the Hornby one, even though the Dublo version is a cruder model and lacks the fine detail of the other. I think it's that the Dublo model has that old fashioned proper engineering quality about it with its wonderful motor and heavy cast body that the plastic Hornby with its cheaper later Ringfield doesn't.
    Some lovely footage of all the models running at the end Oscar.
    Regards, Antony

    For the last video of the year, that was a pure delight. Thank you Oscar. I have 3 A4's but no Mallard and strangely I have been running two of them over the Christmas period, each with a rake of blood and custard coaches. It has been a few minutes of relaxation when I've had the chance. I think I may run them in my last video of the year. All the best for the new year and thank you for a terrific series of videos in 2024. Regards, David.

    Thanks Oscar, a good bit of East Coast main line running, I have a Dublo Golden Fleece, I would rather like Mallard, I do love the Super Detail coaches, a shame Wrenn didn't produce a version, but I think they were very costly to manufacture, good clean versions are out there, and the passenger full brake and sleeper coaches can be picked up for not too much money, the boxed examples tend to be in better condition.

    Morning Oscar, what an interesting comparison between the two Mallard models. Although the Hornby version is more detailed and advanced, the Dublo version oozes charismatic appeal.
    The two A4 models in my collection are both Tri-ang Wrenn examples, in reality being an amalgam of a Hornby Dublo loco coupled to the Tri-ang Hornby Flying Scotsman tender. These make another interesting comparison with the two you featured today.
    Hope you and Roberta had a great Christmas, catch you soon. Best wishes for the New Year from Rob & Sue.

      Good morning Rob & Sue, thanks for looking in, amazing the amount of detail Dublo were able to capture with these metal bodies and simple paintwork, very pleasing to look at. Great to hear you have the Tri-ang Wrenn versions in your collection.

    Always nice to see the Super Detail coaches from the HD range. The compensated bogies, while a good idea in theory, had the problem that the compensation tended to stick in one place causing the vehicles to derail. I had not previously considered the friction point you make but yes its a good observation. I have heard it said that the non compensated coach you have was only ever found in sets rather than individual sales. The interior detail in these vehicles is excellent with such features as padded seats in First class and one of the compartment doors is open. There went on to be quite a few variations in the SD range with some nice Open Plan coaches and the much sought after Restaurant cars in maroon and choclate and cream.

      I've got 3 super detailed coaches which I run with a Wrenn 'Mallard'. Not easy to see but I'd noticed that they went to the trouble of different seats in the 1st class compartments.

    • @sanspareil3018
      @sanspareil3018 2 дня назад +1

      @ yes the first class seats are “padded” Originally they were planned to also have lights fitted, maybe as an “add on kit”, hence the holes in the ceilings and on the plastic underframe. Sadly this never happened as they went bust.

    • @davekirton4096
      @davekirton4096 2 дня назад +2

      @sanspareil3018 That's interesting about the lights, as you say it's a shame it didn't happen. I've got a Trix coach with lighting which I think was sold as an accessory.

    • @oscarpaisley
      @oscarpaisley  День назад

      Good morning thanks again for looking at taking the time to come with this excellent information. It's very much appreciated. I have noticed that some of these coaches with the compensated bogies the construction of them is quite loose and free moving whilst others have virtually no movement whatsoever, so far, I've not come across any specific issues with them when running.
      All the best.
      Oscar

    Fun video showing some classic old models. I never had Hornby Dublo as a kid, purely Triang. Of course both manufacturers locked you in to their range and ignored the other. It took ages before I realised it was just a question of incompatible couplings. They could have released a converter wagon or coach but of course this never happened until Triang took over HD and put out an open wagon as a converter wagon, not that it was up to much. And so the Triang coupling became standard instead of the HD PECO coupling which was neater, allowed closer coupling, and let you lift stock off the track without disturbing vehicles to which it was coupled.
    Anyhow I've recently been acquiring some HD stock all these years later. The BR Mk 1 coaches are very attractive because of the flush fitting windows which nobody else managed until years later, not counting the Kitmaster examples of course.

    I do love an A4. Sadly, one of mine is starting to give a bit of trouble. It is very like your Hornby A4 Mallard, except that it has a single chimney and the livery is what is sometimes described as "purple", ie one of the experimental ones from circa 1948 to 1952. It is named "Woodcock" and the number is 60029. It is not listed (or I cannot find it?) in the online Hornby Railways Collectors Guide. I suspect it may be one of the limited runs of 500 that Hornby (Margate production) produced for the late lamented Beatties chain of model shops. The problem is that the traction tyres are intact, but have worn smooth and/or have hardened.It is not easy to get the correct replacement traction tyres, and is a bit of a faff to fit them. I once had to scrap a tender drive, because I fitted the tyres and then had trouble re-assembling the motor, so that it ran as per before I cocked it up!!!! Kindest regards, Christopher.

    Hi Oscar,
    That was a bit of hair raising work, with four trains all running together? I don't think that you were running any Mk. 2 couplings, so the Triang / Hornby trains should have been pretty safe? I can't speak for the Dublo trains, I've not had much to do with their couplers?
    It is certainly a "loud" time on the railway with them all running together, but all locos performed very well. Certainly some very nice trains on the go today..
    The track that goes to the back of the turntable between the inner and outer Series 3 lines, has plenty of curves and points.. If a loco was going to give any trouble, I would expect it to happen there? However, the Flying Scotsman took the bends really well, with the Teak coaches following along.. Being the fine loco that it is, that difficult piece of track and bends presented no problems at all..
    This was a very pleasing running session today, with some great trains on both systems.. It is a real pleasure to watch this layout running. Thank you for sharing.. Take care, Rob

    Try running one Mallard with 8 coaches, a much better weight if you want to run an LNER train in true LNER style. Why have you got two engines exactly the same? Pointless. Give one Mallard away and keep the other. If you want two A4s, why not, try finding one with a number and name you don't have, like Seagull or Sir Nigel Gresley.

    • @davekirton4096
      @davekirton4096 2 дня назад

      If you look closely you'll see they're not exactly the same . . .
