- Car collecting is an expensive hobby, to say the least. Not only to you have to have quite a bit of knowledge about all the goings on under the hood of some of the rarest and most expensive cars on the planet, you have to have a place to store them, a mechanic to be on upkeep duty, and… the list goes on and on and on. Only The Richest can even think about starting up a collection, and partaking in it-- Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and the late Paul Walker all come to mind. These car enthusiasts have incredible collections, with hundreds upon hundreds of amazing cars that you would be hard pressed to find anywhere else-- or be able to buy yourself! But… There's one man out there who’s car collection makes these celebs look like amateurs. That man is Hassanal Bolkiah, the Sultan of Brunei. Reports put his car collection at… 7,000 cars. Oh, and these ain’t run of the mill family sedans here. There no way you are going to find any Ford Explorers here, folks. Remember we are talking about one of the most wealthy and powerful men in the world! He is not gonna just collect ANY random old vehicle! The Sultan collects cars by Aston Martin, Bentley, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, Porsche, and Rolls Royce just to name a few. Hey, it’s good to be the king! Time to take a drive through the garage of the Sultan of Brunei. Start your engines.

the pictures are NOT from his collection........... its faked.
The Sultan isn't a "collector": he's the world's wealthiest car hoarder. And the pictures I've seen of his "collection" have all been dust-covered, no matter how new or old. My understanding is that if you're a favored relative/client/friend/other, you can just ask him for any car as a driver - if you can't find one you like, the Sultan will get it for you. And when you're done, it gets parked along with all the other cars....

Such a massive collection with a lot of cars that probably just sit and rot. A lot of people think high mileage and constant use breaks down a car, but just sitting is just as bad or worse.
Seals break down and fluids turn acidic. What's the point of owning a car if one doesn't even occasionally drive it?

He's not a connoisseur of cars, he's a gluten, a hoarder, who doesn't even respect these magnificent machines enough to take care of them.

@@coffeebot3526 No, of course not. But it is well known (and even hinted at in this video and others) when he gets bored of/forgets particular cars (or maybe just need more space) he effectively dumps and simply stops maintaining them, letting them decay instead of selling them on or giving them away.

Imagine if the f50 was $480,000
F40 was 240k 20 years ago
@@bugattiincroyable This video came out last year, F50s sold for 5 million last year lol. They are not 480k lol. Also, from the years 2000 to 2014; there were a total of 18 F40's sold; they were incredibly undervalued and condition unknown sold so we cant say for sure what their "true" value would have been if properly available and sold regularly. That said, *of course* they sky rocketed in price recent years but its also not whats being discussed.
I was his waiter. It was a luncheon for Rolls Royce owners and enthusiasts. They came from all over, and they weren't necessarily all super rich guys. They all, I'm sure, made good livings, but actually they came from all walks of life.
After the lunch was over, they hung out in the parking lot, looking underneath the hoods, and doing what all car guys do. Then they got into their cars and all took off together for a Sunday drive. Maybe a hundred guys and their Rollers. The lunch was held in the Tuxedo Park Country Club in upstate New York.
It must have been hilarious to see people in the neighboring towns wondering what on earth are almost a hundred Rolls Royce's doing passing them by on Route 17 in the little town of Sloatsburg, New York. Too funny.
Thought for sure you were getting ready to say he didn't tip shit...lol
Now that's a collection.
Great article about this in the latest issue of The Road Rat (#9). It’s just an insane story. The brother, Prince Jefri, was the driving force behind the hoarding of cars. Their spending was appearantly vital in keeping Rolls Royce and other luxury brands alive during the 90s. They kept whole departments busy with customization of the vehicles before delivery. The brothers even bought a C-130J Hercules transport plane for bringing in the cars thirty at a time. Sadly it seems like 90% of the collection is scrap by now. It’s now considered an annoyance and embarrassment by officials in charge. Oh, and Jefri also had another hobby. The article mentions that he “kept a vast and constantly evolving harem, a diverse international buffet of around 40 models, actresses and escorts who were scouted and recruited from all over the world...”.
I've heard the same about harems and slaves still being kept in certain Middle Eastern countries. Pathetic. If not for Western investment and oil money, they'd still be living like it was 1925, like a lot of Africa.
What do you mean scrap? The cars are "unrestored" in collectors terms with like 0 miles on the odo and even in their current conditions are worth more than they were bought for. However, I dont think they ever going to go on the open market. EVER
@@tavo.B It’s a quote from the article in The Road Rat #9. Mike Sheehan is a Ferrari-dealer who is one of the few outsiders to have seen the collection. He tried to buy cars from the collection in 2002 without any luck. He says “ninety per cent of the cars are now scrap”.
In the article Sheehan goes on to describe “McLaren F1s and Ferrari F40s ‘cooking in the sun’ in one glasswalled building; literally hundreds of 500 SLs and SELs left out in all weathers, windows open, ‘all totally destroyed’. Inside, rows of special bodied Ferraris and Bentleys decayed in the tropical humidity, tyres flat, seals perished, looms and ECUs all shot. Plus leather interiors bloomed with inch-thick mould in the airless confines of cars undriven since they left the factory”.
Sheehan also explains: “Every once in a while, someone with the right connection, on the right day, gets a car out of there”. So if you are a bigwig in the oil industry, having a meeting with Brunei’s ministry for oil, and you’re talking cars... You might end up with a F40 as a parting gift.
@@rolf-arnesand2304 I read that article. But it also mentions only about 1000 cars are there.
Wikipedia says a majority of them were sold when the bankruptcy hit with the oil price crash in 1998.
Another question I have is, if his net worth is 20billion , why cant he switch on the air conditioning? Lol too rich to care ..

Two years ago I saw a Vector M12 at Barrett-Jackson. It was one of the cars from the Sultans collection, and it was fairly dilapidated. The paint looked like shit, some of the exterior panels looked crooked. The car was behind some ropes but it was easy to look into the driver and passenger windows to see inside. The interior door panels looked warped and where the doors have these little tiny windows under the main door windows there was what looked like glue had be slowly dripping down the glass.
The tires, despite being old, looked like they had been completely unused…

The Sultan didn’t actually buy most of the cars here; he repossessed them after his brother spent the country’s money on pretty much every car there, and since so many of them were owned by the royal family, the companies that distributed the cars wouldn’t let him sell them. So he’d just drop them at auction locally every now and again and left the others to rot. Weird story about extreme wealth though.
