First Thing to Do on New Jack Stands

  • When buying new jack stands, the first thing I need to do is push-in a metal tab to keep the jack stand arms from being fully removed when jack stands are lifted from the arms themselves. This metal tab gets pushed in after inserting the jack stand support arms. The tab coincides with a recessed channel in the forged steel support arms and once the metal tabs are bent inward, the tabs keep the support arm from being fully removed because the tab catches on the raised channel at the end of each support arm.

But what if I wanna stack em for easy storage? :(

That's a good point! I have a tendency to grab using their support arms from where I keep them to carry to the vehicle on which I'm working so I like having that tab keeping the arms from coming out completely. However, I can see what you're saying for storage it would be nice to pull those arms out and nest the frames together. Thanks for watching and sharing your viewpoint! 👍

I don’t bend the tab because I stack my stands on a shelf in my garage and I stack the removable pieces next to them.
On another note, I don’t think I got a notification when this video posted. I don’t know what’s going on with RUclips lately.

I can see stacking them would be a nice benefit of not bending in those tabs. I have a spot in my garage on the floor out of the way and usually carry these around the garage from their support arms so I like them staying in-place. When I post a short, I think I've seen some footnote stating they don't send out notifications for shorts but that may have been awhile ago, now. Thanks for finding it and watching! I've been out of the RUclips cycle lately just due to usual "work and life issues" which seems to come in "waves" and I need to stop over to your channel to get caught up on your postings! Thanks for stopping over, watching and commenting as usual 💪🙏

@@WorksIRL I’m a little jealous. My garage is in such disarray, I have to move stuff out of the way just to get my jack stands off of the shelf. 🤣

@@DiligentDave1966 🤣I think you'd retract your comment when you saw my garage as I'm a classic example of "the more space you have, the more junk you have to fill it up!" 😆As I mentioned using the jack stand arms to lift and carry the jack stands is because they live in a gap next to the stairs from garage into my house along with a pile of "junk" I should throw away and those arms sticking up give me the chance to grab them from the sea of "junk" around them on that somewhat unusable floor space! 🤣At least you're using shelves which sounds much more organized 💪

@@WorksIRL My garage is supposed to be a 2 car garage, but the way it’s built only allows one car to fit comfortably.
I thought that was great when we moved in. I can just stack stuff along the walls on either side of the car, and I will never need a storage unit again.
Well, fast forward to about 2 years ago, and we had to get a storage unit. 🤣🤣

Thanks for sharing that tip...I think that was one of the reasons behind the recalled batch of HF jack stands some years ago. I see the newest ones at HF are branded under their "Daytona" name and it looks like they include a "safety pin" to slip into a shaped hole to help lock the cam release lever. Thanks for watching and sharing your advice! 👍

You're definitely not alone and had there not been a high-visibility sticker pointing to this tab and a note in the instruction sheet, I'd easily have missed it, too. Thanks for watching and sharing your gracious feedback 👍

Some older batches of HF jack stands were recalled some years ago. I checked mine years ago and found they weren't included in that recall. I'd like to think they've improved the design/manufacturing quality to avoid similar dangerous mistakes again. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment. 👍
