A note about Hohenheim is although we don't get a mention of him in the episode, Ed is actually wearing his coat in the final scene of the show and I think that's pretty poetic.

Two things to notice. In the pic with Ed and Winry holding thier kids, it mirrors the way Ho and his wife held thier sons. Also notice Ed was wearing his father's trench coat.
But Ed and his oldest have huge grins, rather than Hohenheim's worry that he does not deserve this.

I was waiting until the final episode to say this to avoid spoilers but there is a lot of symbolism around every humunculus death. Each of them died in a way that relates to their sin.
Lust died to Roy trying to protect someone he loved.
Gluttony was eaten.
Envy took his own life, the only thing that truly belonged to him.
Sloth died in a tough fight.
Wrath died in peace with a smile on his face.
Pride was humbled by Kimbly, and was the only humunculus to have their body survive because he is the only sin nobody can fully get rid of in themselves.
Greed admitted he had everything he could want, his friends.
And finally, dwarf in the flask humunculus, aka father, had no symbols on his portal of truth, it was just blank. This represents that he learned nothing about what’s important in life.
And Slave #23 died free
I would also like to add about the prices of human transmutation. Edward lost his leg, his mother was his mainstay in life. Alphonse lost his whole body because his mother was a source of warmth in his life. Edward extended his hand for his brother's return, as Al was his right-hand man. Izumi lost organs related to the birth of children for trying to get the child back. Mustang lost his sight, as it was said, because of his desperate desire to see a bright future for the country.
I used a translator for this. since I don't know English well, don't judge strictly
I think Pride also survived because that's one of the most painful things that happens to someone prideful who gets humbled. He even had to live his new life with a mark on his face.
As for father. I think it's also symbolic how he tried to get everything, I mean, he literally swallowed God. In return he had to go back to being part of God, a mere shadow in the creation. Probably symbolic of his inability to accept nature or reality as it is and trying to turn it on its head for his own gain, just like the big shots in Central Command, which is related to the whole overarching idea of "endure hardship and you will become stronger".

In the manga they discuss Mustang about to be discharged from the military due to the blindness. So he would be unable to lead the military based state without the healing, leaving it open to people with more nefarious intentions
I've watched this anime so many times but seeing someone experience it for the first time and seeing them not only enjoy it but have an emotional reaction to it made me appreciate this show so much more.

I always loved the parallel between the first Elric family picture and the next:
- First, There’s the obvious resemblance between Ed and his son
- Second, while the pictures are similar, you had Hohenheim crying, and now you have Ed with a huge grin, showing all is well in the end
- Last, he went from resenting Hohenheim to looking like him
Side note: Ed has one of the best proposals in anime history (still an alchemist at heart), beaten only by Loid proposing to Yor with the grenade pin. And now that Ed and Winry have a family, safe to say Ed got a taste of that Winry apple pie…

Oh Hohenheim's not completely missing from the last episode.
In the end credits photo collection, you can see Pinako standing in front of two graves. The headstones read "Trisha Elric" and "Van Hohenheim".
The last volume of the manga also has something special at the very end. Won't tell you what though.
I really like how the rework is called Brotherhood.
FMA is full of brotherhood, companionship, and creating bonds.
In every point if the cast we can see some representation of this it in a good or distorted way.
Greed in his jorney to "make his own" family. Twice.
Father and Hohenheim, when father even gave to him half of the souls from the people of Xerxes in some twisted way of gratitude. And Hohenheim feeling sad for this to be the outcome for the guy that gave him so much in life.
The bloopers are sooo good. Also Ed and Winry are to fking adorable.
Edit: Olivier's VA is Stephanie Young... she's in a LOT of stuff.
Edit2: They are 100% a couple before the exchange at the Train Station... that is not a "Be my Girlfriend!" that's a proposal.
Edit3: Yeah... Winry got bigger... at the point where Ed, Greed, and the Chimera are at her place it's been about a year since the series started... and of course train station at the end was 3 years so they were both 18... we can assume 3-4 more years with the "Family Photo".
Edit4: Rainbow Connection is a song in the Muppets shows that Kermit the Frog sings.

This has been an absolutely great journey, getting to see you underestimate the series, thinking it was just a "kid's show", to realizing the absolute diamond that it is. I think Al’s voice is also different bc he aged in the truth so he’s not sounding as childish anymore. Havocs and mustangs injuries also are probably both nerve based so it’s possible to heal with a philosopher stone because it’s not like regrowing a leg that doesn’t exist. Re attaching a leg might be a different story tho

It's been a fantastic journey and I'm so glad you enjoyed it as much as all of us have.
A bit of a fun fact, the reason there isnt a kiss between them is because the creator could not draw people kissing.
If you still want more FMAB to enjoy there are OVA's for it as well as the KOMA theatre shorts which are silly shorts based on the authors silly little doodles she would add at the end of each book, they're even dubbed.
Mannnnn that ending hits me so hard, I couldn't watch it without the tears of happiness although I would feel empty afterwards. That monologue from ed at the end is also a beautiful one, what a lesson I've learned from this anime. One of the most memorable endings of all anime I've watched.
Alkahestry basically uses regular alchemical/alkahestrial techniques to do what a doctor would do without much effort. It can't straight up replace a leg. That's why you saw May only stop Hawkeye's bleeding but not fix her throat completely as well as why Marco could only stop his face's bleeding and not take it back to before it was destroyed.
what a journey it was. I don't think any anime can top what fmab had to offer
If Berserk ever gets a proper adaptation, I feel only it can top it.

@@OnMyLunchBreak07idk much about the manga, but i always hear how vile it is in regards of unnecessary trauma porn in regards to the treatment of women and sexual assault (and have seen the pictures of the manga), and saw a pic of a interview of the author admitting that some of the trauma porn with the explicit sexual assault of women is because that sells. For that reason alone, no matter how good the story is, it can’t top Fullmetal as a story. This story holds even small characters with such respect and care for the storylines in a way thats so real (as in, there’s no flat characters. Even side characters are well rounded). And a story like Berserk that gave in to reducing SA as trauma porn to sell can’t really compete with fullmetal.
One thing that almost nobody picks up on in the ending montage is that Scar is wearing same vestments of Ishvalan priest that his master was wearing.
Hellsing abridged is like bloopers, that never stops for 10 episodes straight.
The double circle on young Selim's head now is a contrast from the Ouroboros tattoo the homonculi. The ouroboros is a symbol that represents a continuous cycle of self-consumption, eventually the ouroboros will consume all that it was. The double circle, to contrast, is more of a representation of the all is one, and one is all. Much more balanced, and hopefully for little Selim, able to see both the give and the take, the ebb and the flow, the all in the one and the one in the all - the equivalent exchange that the original homonculi were missing.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but where WAS Pride's Ouroboros tattoo? Because I don't remember ever seeing one on him

I'm not sure that's the case because some of the homunculi had those little nodes on them like that. Lust, Sloth, and Gluttony all had them.

Gluttony was a failed portal of truth and it makes sense for him to have circles of the balance of truth on him.
Lust was the only femme coded homunculus embodying the opposite attributes of father.
Sloth's blinded him in one eye entirely blinding him to what his role was.
But more importantly than any of that is in alchemy symbols are everything. And even small changes can yield vastly different results. In each of the previous examples, all 3 homunculus lack a simple circle in the circle. They have atleast two circles connected by red lines. This would make the symbol similar, but not equivalent.

Ed and Al look so much like their dad. They even dress like him now, too, the dark vest and pants and long brown coat and Ed with the single brief case like his old man. I think that says a lot about how their feelings changed towards their dad after this was all over. They grew up to be just like him... traveling around and everything lol

Watching the end of FMA always makes me sentimental and sad, although it is the best ending I have ever seen, it is like saying goodbye to a good friend.
Goodbye to my sweet children, goodbye to my fire colonel, Riza, Ling, and all the characters who have stayed with me for life.
That's why that extra chapter of the manga, "another end of the journey", where Al says goodbye to his armor, is so beautiful to me. It perfectly concludes what I feel every time I watch this anime.

And there you go! Top rated MAL anime of all time. One of the best story progressions and conclusions of anime and easily among top 10 of most veteran weebs.
It was hard not to get teared up at the scene when Winry sees Ed an Al back. And when Ed talks about sacrifices, lessons and a heart made fullmetal, it just takes you back at what a journey it has been. Edward has never been shown as the overpowered MC who saves the day, rather a guy who wants to do whats right and move forward in life.
I would say its a near perfect anime story, apart from slightly outdated method of storytelling and punchlines and some convenient accidents from plot sake, its hard to find many flaws with FMAB. Everything from characters, world, story progression and originality its all soo good.
I can tell that Luke enjoyed this and its was worth while for my 7th rewatch.
Now that we are done with this heart warming journey, looking forward to Re : Zero. Without spoilers Ill just say Im still not prepared I still dread to watch Re Zero Again.

My favorite thing about your reactions, you always seem to get immersed in whatever you're reacting to. Whether it confuses you, saddens you or excites you, it's nice seeing someone genuinely get into whatever they're diving into and such instead of just going through something 'matter of fact'-ly. @38:58 The Rainbow Connection is a song sung by Kermit the Frog at the beginning of The Muppet Movie. It's super iconic among the Gen X and Gen Y folks who grew up with the Muppets. Not sure how popular they were across the pond though.
The reason for the song at 16 is cause she just woke up, she knows that it tickles, the sound of al's voice without the metal.
But she can't believe what shes hearing, you can see it on her face, like winning the lottery you just look at it confused thinking you must to looking at it wrong. She thinks when she's open that door its gonna be some guy from the village that for some reason sounds like al, but she also knows thats totally al's voice, and al would never say he was being tickled unless...
So she's kinda in auto mode trying to process the impossibility of what she's hearing.
Also that walk is for keeping his center of gravity high as he leans forward on the roof but you right if someone walks like that on the street a strong breeze from behind can knock em on their face. XD.
If you keep ur center of gravity low while on a roof which might be your instinct, it makes it real easy to slip a foot and throw urself off balance.
Even easier since he still has a fake leg, I seriously wouldn't be up there in that condition, hire a professional.
Completely agree with you. I think the worst possible outcome would be for those tortured souls to remain in the stone collecting dust on a shelf. The only real options to deal with them would be to destroy the stone or utilize their sacrifice for something. Even better to utilize them for a cause they'd appreciate.
Luke needs to watch the original FMA now if only for Yoki's epic backstory.

I never get tired of rewatching the series- every time I bring a friend who’s never seen it to watch it, it’s always priceless to see their fresh reactions to each turning point and each little and big beat of the story and character writing, each one w their own theories as the story went on. Your emotional reactions and mature commentary has given me just as much joy because it’s never enough to discuss how much of a masterpiece this is. Thank you for taking us along your first journey thru FMAB!! It’s been such a blast ✨✨
PS: in case you missed it and others havent mentioned it yet, Ed’s coat at the end is similar to that of Hoenhiem’s. It’s a great parallel and symbol of what his dad really meant to him in the end
Funny thing about Al’s voice since you brought up how different he sounds, there is a very specific bowl they used to get that echoing sound they used on the original fullmetal alchemist. When the team moved to dub brotherhood they tried many different bowls but they didn’t sound quite right so they had to dig out the trusty old Al bowl from the first series 😆 also I believe the VA from the original was to old to do Al in brotherhood(they might have been the person how held onto the the bowl idk) so they ended up getting recast I think as Ling or maybe it was Mai. It was one of the characters that didn’t show up in the origins. just think about that a fullmetal alchemist with no Ling or Mai- love to see you react to the original and see all the difference in the story and crazy plot twists.
The original Alphonse (Aaron Dismuke) voiced young Hohenheim in the flashback to Xerxes. Plus he's continued to be a regular VA in anime, including the recent Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.
Thank you for giving the time to watch and truly appreciate this show. This is just my own interpretation, but i felt like the entire show was a big metaphor for the harsh journey of life, the value of keeping on living despite suffering, moreso than any other media. Some movies portray it well, but FMAB really portrayed it in a deep and direct way. Ed and Al's plot of losing their bodies obviously symbolising mistakes and losses, alchemy symbolising the strength and courage of using what we have in those bad moment, as a crutch, and Ed losing his alchemy but gaining a fullmetal heart implying that he no longer needs a crutch, and finds peace/strength in life, even knowing that it contains sufferings, joys, losses, gains, everything.
Last episode, i bawled my eyes out at Greed's death, though it suited him as he died for the one thing he desired most: real connections/friends. This episode, Ling saying ''guess he really did rub off on me after all'' was so damn comforting. A little reminder of how people's existence carry on after death, a posthumous blessing.
That last little dialogue from Ed also always reminds me why this show means so much to me. Pain, suffering and regrets are a shared experience amongst humans. We all go through them. And yet if we can keep going and have the strength to endure the pain, we end up with a ''heart made fullmetal''. It doesnt necessarily negate the pain every single time, but i like to think that we do get stronger over time, and it gives value to the idea of never giving up on life, valuing the ability to overcome obstacles. and staying on this damn journey. Diagnosed with depression with suicidal proclivities, this meant a lot to me when I watched this show years ago, and it still hits just as hard, years later. Truly a universal and timeless show.
Thanks for the ride man. It was a pleasure to watch alongside you and hear genuine thoughts, crying and laughing together as a lil community thanks to this mere, simple piece of media that touches all of our hearts.

The dot on Selim's head is just a mark all the humuculi besides father had, prides wasn't on his forehead prior to being reset, but gluteny and greed's both moved when they were re-made too.

It was such a blast getting to rewatch FMAB with you!! It's been my number one ever since I first watched it, and I'm very happy you enjoyed ^^
A random recommendation, but I think you'd really enjoy the opening from 'Overly Cautious Hero', it's called TIT FOR TAT and its sung by Myth and Roid (you briefly heard it in the M&R video you did about a week ago).
I also have a personal recommendation of listening to the openings and endings from Ace Attorney (an anime based on the Ace Attorney games)! By no means do you have to watch the show, but I throughly enjoy the music from it ^^
You should try the First FMA, it had a very unique ending and even stuff this anime covered had a better pacing.
I love how this series’ finale episode is just wrapping up things for every major character. Just a totally SATISFYING ending.
I also LOVE how Ed, as he ages, resembles Hohenheim so much. By the end he really was at peace with his father, using his signature ponytail and using the trench coat too.
The only thing that didn't quite hit was that we don't see Roy become Fuhrer and get with Riza.

@@raunjisto2925 It's really annoying how they build it up but don't deliver. The last thing we see with Roy and Riza is Roy's bad mustache. Like seriously? For how well written the story is that part was shitty.
The journey never gets old. This is my first time watching it dubbed as well. I held out as long as I could so I can binge watch the entire thing, I ended up binging it by halves. Still number 1 on my list but now its on to....pain.
The reason Roy is allowed to take the shortcut of using a stone to get his vision back, narratological speaking, is because unlike the other sacrifices he didn't use human transmutation willingly. It would make no moral sense to punish Roy for a decision he didn't make.
Edward and Al have to attone, not Roy, so from a storytelling perspective Edward and Al just getting their bodies back willy nilly would be bad storytelling, it would feel arbitrary and unearned, but that doesn't apply to Roy, who was forced. For him the conclusion of the storyline is that since it's the ishvalans that essentially give him back his vision, symbolic for the end of the cycle of hatred, that Roy should repay this forgiveness by spending the rest of his life earning that forgiveness, by doing what is best for the Ishvalans.
Amazing writing.

There are the Japanese ones and the English ones. The English version has one opening for a generation, and that for the 1st and 2nd generation. The 3rd gen has one op for one season. But the Japanese version has multiple ops for a season in any gen. You should definitely check both versions out. I made playlists on my channel, so you don't need to search, cause in those compilations are a few off and not in the correct order. Thanks for checking out!

I can't overstate how much I love their journey. The biggest moments get me every time. Even now my face still feels wet from the happy tears.
It's rare to reach the end of a journey in anime, and none have left me as fulfilled as the end of FMA.
And I never tire to see other people experience it. That's why I even got my parents to watch it with me. That's why I watch so many reactions to it. I love FMA ❤

That bit about the Rainbow Connection as the guy is dying is based on a song that Kermit the Frog sings. The song is the Rainbow Connection.
I think that background song is fitting. Because while things are basically back to normal now, it took many years to get that far, and that was _with_ Ed, Al, and even Winry putting their lives on the line for it. That lost time isn't coming back. There will always be a gap in their youth where things were different, where Ed was missing an arm, where Al was missing his entire body, when they barely had the time to even drop by Resembool to see Winry on their long journey.
It's something they can heal from, something they _will_ heal from, because they're strong. But that doesn't mean that it's not a sad thing. When you lose something or someone and find peace with it, it just means thinking about it doesn't upset you any longer. It doesn't mean you're not sad to lose or it don't want it back.
I think the song captures that feeling well, a sense of bittersweet nostalgia for a time that never was. Happy that things are back to normal, but sad about all the time and effort it took to get there.

- This ending is so perfect to me. From Mustang refusing to be healed until Havoc is, to Winry hearing Al say he's tickled and realizing he's whole again, to everything insinuated in the end credits. I love it all.
- Ling jokes that Greed rubbed off on him, but he genuinely changed him. And I love that it's obvious in just the way that he talks. He adopted not only his speech patterns and tones, but the desire to adopt every outcast he sees on a countrywide level lol. We could've lived happily with Greed, so I have faith for single soul Selim who is getting a chance to be re-raised by just the sweetheart that is Mrs. Bradley.
- Scar determining he needs no name is next level. He said use descriptors or pronouns, names are dumb lol. The penultimate version of "If you yell in my general direction I will likely respond."
- Even with Hoenheim missing, Ed wearing his old clothes and travelling with his suitcase hits my fragile heart. His proposal is just so cute too! He was being as romantic as a scientist could and then his engineer girlfriend just came in and said "Separate work and home!" and he loved it. The ending lines will forever be a mantra of mine. I've always needed somethinf to remind me bad stuff is unavoidable, but getting through it makes it worth what's on the other side.
- As for the Bloopers... We're eating good tonight.

When I watched this anime for the first time it was highly recommended by a friend and I watched the sub. I can honestly say I didn't just enjoy the dub with your commentary, it felt like watching one of my favorite anime's ever for the first time again with a friend. Thank you so much for your enthusiasm and your genuine appreciation of this show! Greed/Ling is also a fave of mine that slowly grew on me through the entire series, so I totally related to you. It has really been an absolute pleasure! You're such an amazing person, I do hope you keep reacting to other shows ☺
They didn't give you Winry and Ed kissing, but they did give you a picture of their babies so you know they did something.

There are some speculations among fans that the truth went pretty easy on Mustang, only taking his Eye_sight_ , not his actual eyes, so that it could be retored by a philosophers stone, because Roy _didn't_ actually break a Taboo and the truth knows it.
It is a bit unclear wether or not Ed _could_ actually return his leg with the Philosophers stone. Hohenheim said that he could not return Izumis Organs, just shift around what is there and he _is_ a philosophers stone. now, it might be possible that he meant couldn't more as in _wouldn't._ She broke the taboo, she paid the price, he will not give her back what she has lost. But it is also possible that you cannot cheat the truth like that.
Roys Eyes and Havocs Spinal chord are both still _there_ they are just damaged. But hinestly, I'm not entirely sure, plus, as you said, Edward would never use a Philosophers stone to get his leg back
That would make sense but I'm fairly certain you could still get the eyes back with a philosophers stone as well, it would just use up more of it than his eye sight. Keep in mind that we are never told that Edward couldn't get his leg back using one, he just always refused to use peoples lives as fuel for his alchemy, so it's not that he COULDN'T use a philosphers stone to get Al or his leg back, he just didn't want to. Well obviously now he can't use alchemy anymore but Al could get his leg back using a stone

Yea I think Hoennheim probably could have returned her organs, but he just wasn't willing to. Perhaps, like you said, he thought she deserved some sort of punishment for her sins or perhaps he just couldn't afford to use his Philosopher's Stone for something like that because he knew he was gonna need all the power he had for the ensuing showdown on The Promised Day.
The lady at the end was actually Rebecca, the one who arranged the weapons from havoc's store and complained about not finding a good man in central. Note both were standing and together so I take it havoc's finally found a girlfriend that isn't trying to kill him.

About eye and Havoc restoration - in manga Mustang never returned his sight and was ruling the country blind. As for Havoc - he restored ability to move through hard work. They both never used the Philosopher Stone.
There are a few OVAs iirc. One of them tells the story of how Izumi met her husband; it is the "meet cute" trope as can only be done by someone like Izumi. You also get an answer to a mystery of Fort Briggs that was mentioned in passing when Edward first arrived. Do you remember one of the Briggs soldiers mentioning something about a trespasser who hunted bears and beat up their fellow soldiers and stole their supplies about 10 years before? Well...
I think the solemn song that played was like the hymn you sing when you witness a miracle.

Mustang CANNOT use his portal as exchange for his eyes because in that case he has no portal to return to reality, which is different from Ed because Ed pays the price to exchange for his brother and returns with Al's portal (paying the toll as well). So the stone becomes the only way to get Mustang's eyes back
So last clerification with this amazing show :3 regrowing a limb using Alchemy and Alchehistory. They buth essentially work with whatever materials you have. So essentially using both they would need to essentially do minore repairs to the body, stretch out your skin, harden blood. it cant like grow new bones or nerves, ect.
