There is no wife. He thinks the older woman he is with is "just a friend" which makes him a blind fool. The younger woman is someone he took in after her father disappeared and his company hit the skids. The ML had actually developed a relationship with the younger female (FL) but didn't ever have guts to say anything and always pretty much treated her badly no matter how hard she worked to improve herself and become independent. He also let that 2FL talk down to her and to constantly use "we" and hold on to him whenever she was around. Yeah, he's a real gem.
