I have watched every one of your videos, I really like your videos and I was hoping you did not fade away like some have over the years. I used to live in Charlotte, NC. I now live in northeastern New York and still keep bees, I have been a bee keeper for about 20 years
Thanks for your support! It means a lot that you’ve watched so much of my content. I hope I’ve been able to help in some small way! Have a blessed day!
@@Ashby_Farms_NC I sawsome comment somewhere they are more likely to propolis rough sawn inside of the hive and that should be healthy for them. I saw some dipping them in a mix of types of wax mostly paraffin but I wonder why paraffin when trying to keep optimal health of the hives?
Feel your pain Ashby with your cold. Great video on box building. I suspect the future will be additional woodworking equipment. Just found your page a few weeks ago and really like your videos. Best wishes from west Central Arkansas! Philip
Looks good, getting the job done! Labor of love for the bees! Just came through Burlington the weekend coming back from hivelife. If you didn't make it you have to go at least once. Get to see all the RUclips stars like YOU! GOOD JOB BROTHER! Keep the content coming, we will be watching!
I wish I could have gone! Unfortunately we had already scheduled some family stuff, and family is always more important! But I def wish I could have gone. Perhaps next year!
Hay Ashby. Thank you very much for your videos. I have big plans with my bee keeping adventure. as well. I just moved from Florida to WNC. Absolutely love it here.. So i would like to use you as my mentor if you don't mind... But i would like to advice you. You can cut frame rest with a dado blade. Easy to set and faster than 1000 cuts and flipping board twice.... I wish you good luck and looking foreword to your videos.
While you can cut with a Dado, I run a 3/4"x3/4" frame rest. This produces a ton of shavings and is painfully slow to remove that much material. That's why I use the 2 passes on a standard saw blade. Thanks for following along
Good how-to video. I feel your pain cutting out all those boxes. I make my own also. It takes me even longer because I saw my lumber out on a sawmill after felling the logs. Then I cut them to length and put the frame rests in. I do dado the end pieces on the sides because I feel it makes them stronger. I also leave mine rough sawn. The bees seem to really like them and they propalis them up on the inside. I believe propalis helps bees fight diseases.
When you're a one man operation, there's no doubt about it, efficiency is key. Really nice job. I have the same problem with my table saw, arbor is far too short.
I appreciate the short to the point format. Sometimes you just want to watch a 10-15 minute video, not an hour. Seems like that 1" material would equal heavy equipment. Should last a very long time though.
My husband and I have watched your videos from the start! It’s nice to see you making videos again! We’ve been missing you!! Is your wood from a local mill? What type of wood do you use or prefer? Thanks for taking the time to share!! 💕💕prayers that you’re feeling better soon!
Thank you so much for the kind words! This year I have switched away from old growth, to new growth Pine from North Carolina. My friend (Coty) mills all my wood for me a a significantly less cost than the big box store. Thanks for your support!
What are the basic saws you need to start building bee equipment? All I have currently is a miter saw and it looks like I am going to at least need a table saw too
I’m retiring in the Philippines. I can find pallet wood but people cook with that. I’m thinking comfort hives, stack or pile hives and skep hives as the simplest way to start my village on bees. They are dirt poor.
Subscribed!! Dont know if i need 500 but having 10 handy would be nice.. do you have a cut sheet? I see these NUCs going for 60 online and know i can make them a lot cheaper thanks in advance
I don’t have a cut sheet. I’ve got some other videos on the rest of my equipment with all the measurements. Look at the 10 frame box video. That should tell ya
This is actually a problem I had last year. Gotta make sure your cuts are square. Then just roll with it. I actually end up with about 10-15% slightly out of square. It makes for small air gaps between the boxes which allows the hives to “breathe”. It’s not a bad thing
Do you find it cheaper to build your own rather then buying them from a supplier? I’m starting in April with a nuc. I looked at Home Depot and a 10’ board wasn’t much more then buying non assembled boxes. I would love to build my own but can’t see the benefit.
Great question! I also analyzed this when I started. Found a local sawmill on Fb marketplace, and now we’re great friends. I get wood at around $1/boardfoot. Significantly cheaper than big box stores. However it isn’t kiln dried, so you have to allow time for it to dry (6mos). Hope this helps!
Great video. I guess you realized 500 boards only gave you 125 boxes not 250 that you wanted. Did you mill your own lumber? Or get it from the Amish being that they are true 1'?
How do you buy the wood. If I buy from lowes or Home Depot the wood is too expensive versus what I can buy them for from miller bee supply unassembled.
I buy my wood from Redding Sawmill in Prospect NC. Coty is awesome and a fraction of the price of Lowes. If you aren’t nearby, search Fb marketplace for a local sawmill.
My friend Coty owns/operates Redding’s Sawmill in Prospect Hill NC and custom mills the wood at a fraction of the cost of Lowes. I highly recommend his business!

Like the way you are doing bee equipment with rough sawn lumber, very economical, good way to save $$
You have to when starting out. The bees dont care if its rough cut or not

Thanks! I’ve got the first of 3 videos up now about dimensions and building. Thanks for watching!

Propolis definitely helps the colony health. I don’t envy your extra steps. That’s ALOT of work!
@@Ashby_Farms_NC Yes it is a lot to do but I save a lot on buying wooden ware. I figure I have the mill and a lot of trees so way not.

Well done mate. Hope i can one day have days like this, looking forward to the year ahead. Love it. Thanks very much 😄
You can do it! Thanks for watching our videos!
Ashby, I can give you a run for the Mouth Of The South Title. I just found your content today. I’m a couple of roads over in Wake County.

you must bee a carpenter with those skills
Nah I’ve always loved building though
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it

It sure is heavy! Built to last!!!
Great video's!!!!
Thank you!
You could use the dado to cut the frame rests that would be more time efficiant and neater cut.
Yeah but the shavings!!!
Great job. How much excess equipment should a bee keeper have. To plan ahead and not run out.
I plan for what I need for the season and figure it into my schedule as to when I’ll need it
Good job young man
Thanks!
fine work.

Cool
Thanks!
Ashby really like your videos and information. Do you sell equipment
I don’t sell equipment. Just my wife and I building it
Would love to make one. Are the plans available or did I miss them?
Just posted the first of 3 videos of how to make your own.
Great job.
Thanks!
Where do you buy your bulk bee frames if you don’t mind me asking
Beeline by the pallets. Price really isn’t an advantage until you start ordering a few pallets at a time
Have you calculated the cost per box and number of man hours per box?
Unfortunately no. The calculation was “I want to quit my day job” and was worth every moment!!!!!

Who hasn't had a head cold?! Hope you get over it. Looks like you have a pretty good system. Where did you get your lumber?
A buddy of mine (Coty Redding) ……Redding’s Sawmill in Prospect Hill NC cuts all my lumber. Give him a call! He’s on Fb marketplace!
How do you go about getting them square quickly. I just put together a hundred deeps and that was the bottle neck that cost me the most time. Thanks

At the moment ~500

Hello!! I builded 2 beehive. My first two i wish one day i could do 250 like you. You selling them or doing it for yourself?
For myself
Are you dovetailing these?
Not at all! Butt-Joints with 3” screws. There’s no separating them once they’re together!
