@Kenneth Yoon - I wonder if that is because so many want touch performance in their screens? I picked up my Lenovo looking for a touch screen. The matte is very nice - too bad we are not able to get both - yet.😉
@@dr.donnawalter4380 My touchscreen first gen thinkpad Yoga had a matte touchscreen! I think it was to make the pen feel nicer. It's literally just a screen protector but more permanent.
In my experience, any laptop be it for creators, gamers or general users, if laptop hasn't got excellent heat dissipation, then it will not last more than 3 years and performance will simply dwindle. What I want to see are the reviews the performance after heavy usage of of 6 months to a year. Otherwise all laptops are mere claims. I watch all of your reviews, just as a tech lover, but there is nothing there more than your opinion of your feel and specifications.
Matt! Finally bro. Been waiting for a review of this from you. Thank you so much! How would you compare it to the Razer Blade 15 Studio with the NVIDIA Quadro RTX 5000? Long live the nipple!
i wish apple had wifi 6, upgradeable memory, 4k matte display, 2 upgradeable ssd slots, hdmi, usba, ethernet, sd card, seperate fast charger, this keyboard, and spill resistance, and so many great sales. However apple wins on trackpad, screen size by .4, speakers, clean look, undervolt at the factory, and new thermal system, 8gb video option, but most repairs out of warranty repairs are mother board related meaning at least $1500.
Hi, you always seem to forget to mention the smartcard slot when showing the I/O ports. I was shocked when I got my Thinkpad X1 gen 1 to find I could stcick my ID card in the side :D after reading it had a smartcard slot on the features list. lol So please next time, mention the memorycard slot AND smartcard, these things are important for content creators (memorycard) and developers working on government projects required ID authentication ( smartcard )
I can’t wait for the new intel chips, you’re right, in devices like this it’ll make a huge difference. I still love my Extreme Model 1. I’m with you the small improvements are nice but I’m not heartbroken I don’t have them. I also use it 95% for coding so I don’t need the 4K display but for anyone who is into content having a matte version of the 4K is probably the biggest deal but on 3.5 hours of battery. Ouch. With my FHD I’m getting around 6 or 7 depending on whether I’ve got the gpu engaged a little or a lot. When it’s a lot the battery drops a lot quicker but I still get about 4.5. It’s the only real gripe I have (other than thermal throttling) with the unit. If I had a more powerful USB C charger it’d be easier to take but 100W usb c chargers you can travel with are hard to find.... I lied I have 1 other gripe. I with it was a Cm less wide. 99% of the laptop bags I’ve looked at use the 15” MacBook as the reference device for sizing and the Extreme is ever do slightly too big. I’m more annoyed with the bag manufactures than Lenovo though. An extra Cm and they open up their bags to all us non-mac heretics.
Joonpil Park the XPS has the size advantage but worst thermals, a sub-par keyboard compared to the Extreme’s which is the best on a laptop as well the Extreme has a better screen and is lighter. Plus the Extreme was a few hundreds of dollars cheaper on-sale than the XPS when I bought it so while I’d love the smaller size I think I made the right decision for me.
I ended up going with one of the Yoga versions from a year ago and got a smoking deal - a US $1,300+ laptop for $500 - or at least I thought it was a good deal. This one sounds fabulous and in a few years may upgrade to one with LTE although I think the one I picked up can be configured for that. Nice review. Thank you.
Could you please compare the OLED and the 500 nits version of this laptop? And which one would you choose for your personal use? Thank you very much for all of the time that you and your team are investing in these videos.
Old video, but it should be clear that the extreme gen 2 doesn't AUTOMATICALLY get the carbon weave design on top...it's only on the 4K displays. Also if you're only getting 3 hours of battery life, even on a 4k display there is something wrong with your settings if you're just browsing the internet or watching videos.
I remember him saying in his previous videos that if you're buying a machine which is so expensive, the performance shouldn't depend on the manual undervolting.
My own X1E G2 with the 4KIPS Display has a MAX runtime of 4h when using it very thoroughly on minimal Settings. With optimal powersettings and doing a bit of slightly excessive websurfing you can quickly drop to ca 2.5h runtime. I had first a completely failed Keyboard which took 2 attempts to fix (thank god I purchased it with onsite Support), then it still has a mushy typing feeling and even although I am not a fast typer it manages to loose keys occasionally. (see the very excessice Lenovo Forum thread. It seems a Standard Problem!) Another issue is microstuttering and hangs: you have frequent short hangs and on longer Sessions 1-2 longer hangs where it becomes unresponsive. Streaming often leads to desynchonisation of Audio and Video which doesn't even happen on my old trusty x230. It's NOT suited for Audio Work! Miserable Latency. Not the best Laptop Lenovo did. For the price I'm super annoyed. (No, unfortunately I can't return it).
@omran it fits my needs for light video editing ^^ I previously using zenbook ux32vd for that particular purpose.. rendering time is significantly faster and editing process is more fluid.. a lot less loading time when applying effect.. even for previewing video on premiere pro cc 2019.. and I could use the latest effect for 360 video.. it was just too complicated for my zenbook to handle I suppose.. haha.. I love the abundant ports it has (2 USB 3, Thunderbolt, USB C, SD Card).. and it's "future proof"@ (2 ram slots and 2 SSD slot). It throttled when rendering as expected on this form factor.. (it is seriously lighter than XPS 15 and thinner) yet to me it is still a great upgrade.. 4k display is nice yet it needs calibration.. (over contrast) I used Spyder for this purpose, but then, I guess a few months ago Lenovo deployed presets for the display setting.. problem solved.. I guess like every week there's always software/bios/driver update by Lenovo.. if that is matter to you
Hi Matthew, great video ! I just have one concern about this thinkpad x1 extreme 2nd generation. The heatsinks ! Are they just under the screen, right? In the long run, the heat coming out could affects the components of the screen ? Thanks !
alienguitarboy: I think the answer to that is already obvious. I was told it came with an optical drive and maybe an SSD is an optical drive. All I've ever used was a ROM drive with a 5 by 5 tray. All my data back up is on data discs. Apparently LENOVO doesn't have a ROM drive. I have recently bought a Toshiba 17" with all I need. As far as storage goes, C and D are all I need.
can't afford the i-9 so I'm going with the i-7 like he said I don't think it's capable of taking advantage of that processor anyways these thinner laptops can't really handle the heat from an i-9 but I've heard so many good things about this model aside from this so I'm happy with my decision
Matthew, can sou please check brightness in future? Because I have bought Gen 2 UHD with 500 nits and also a Colorimeter (SpyderX Pro). With DisplayCal I have measured only 265 nits!! (uncalibrated so as it is from Lenovo)
Are you sure about the supported color gamut of the 4K models? The specifications on the Lenovo’s web page show 100% of Adobe Rgb or 100% of DCI P3 , depending on the model.
Hey Matthew, love the review dude. I've got 2 questions: 1. Do you think the X1 will have a Gen 3 with better cooling system, higher ram capacity (128gb) like the P52 2. Can the current Gen 2 support being upgraded to 128gb of ram? I know it says max is 32Gb if I remember correctly but I read somewhere it might, just wanted to get your 2 cents in this
01.45 Thats one of the main reasons Thinkpads are known for. Nowhere you can get better antiglare displays other than Thinkpads. These machines are for productive work, no wonder why they used even in ISS. When lenovo acquired Think brand, form IBM...I thought...they wont be able to handle it nicely(matter of fact they...deviated the product line a lot), but eventually they figured the philosophy out.
I also bought this Extreme X1 and had the biggest quality issues ever. 3 Month of nightmare with technical support. Finnally i switched to an XPS15 and are happy. Sorry Lenovo, you totally dissapointed me and lost a customer forever
I bought a x1 Extreme gen 2 but got the normal black cover not the carbon? Where there options? What about the battery life mine without using any heavy cpu application it only last around 3 hours. Where it claims to last around 14 hours in the website.
Would you stay away for the i9 because of throttling issues? They offer one now but i don't want to buy it if it's not going to work as good. What's the sweet spot, the i7-9750H?
It’s slightly heavier, but for that you get more , cooling ah that can be said about any laptop really it becomes relative when compared accurately. Haven’t looked at ‘s’ model but I’m sure it’s slightly different. Either way portable is about more than weight
Thanks for video - it's so bad Lenovo no longer offers the Multi Touch + Matte Screen option that was available with GEN 1 ... With GEN 2, multitouch is only available with 4K OLED GLOSSY screen (impossible to buy Glossy ) !!! GEN 1 is no longer available ... So need to wait until lenovo offers back again Multi Touch + Matt screen ... and why LENOVO only send reviewers with the matte/ Non Touch X1 extreme Gen2 ? ...I guess they perfectly know Glossy screen does not sell !
does Lenovo allow you to to adjust the fan curve? like start all MAX FAN mode for some render works? I think I might spend the extra 600€ and get this one... even though I will miss the thin XPS bezels...
How important is the 4K display? I'm actually working on a 4K display now and think about going back to a 1080P to get better battery performance. Also you get a 450 euro discount and more nits and dolby vision on the 1080P. Or is this a stupid thought?
I like ThinkPad but I do not understand how the ThinkPad X1 carbon put the sound up that I thought was excellent, and the ThinkPad Extreme the sound is still below the chassis, they should make the change since the sound is criticized
Is it a good (and I mean a very good) option for apps that require a good graphic card like autodesk programs (architecture), adobe programs (graphic design) etc etc?
Thinkpads from lenovo has very poor design for stability. You will notice a lot of cracks appearing on the body of it once you start using it within weeks of buying a brand new laptop.Search in the web for cracks on thinkpads. A lot of coustomers are facing this issue.
I have x1 carbon gen 7 and with full hd display battery last about 10hrs which will be suitable for a whole day at university and it is significantly lighter than x1e g2. 16gb or RAM is more than enough for tasks you will be doing at the university. For some high intensive CPU workload both computers get hot so typing should be an issue. Want to have CPU workload get a spare keyboard for both laptops.
Getting this laptop for 1600 3yr insurance 1080p screen 32gb ram 1tb ssd I think it's a steal but hard to tell with Lenovo's bazaro pricing website sales
Honestly I got the MBP 16 with i9 and 5500m. Returned it after a week due to poor performance and thermal issues. Loud fans, really hot when connected to external display, etc. Also it's a lot heavier....and more expensive
Hi! I brought this notebook 6 weeks ago (4K IPS Display, Core i7, 32 GB RAM). There is a widespread problem detected with the keyboard, who is missing stokes and letters when you are writing. There are cases of different notebooks affected from many places in the world (Europe, US, Latin America). The problem was reported on the Lenovo support forums, with 21 pages of complaints, but zero answer at this point. There are many other problems (awful battery life for the 4K version -only 2 hours-, the OLED version has a poor image display, and problems with stability on certain scenarios like using a 4K external dock or lag while using a secondary display). Don't buy this Notebook until there is a fix for this problem. Their Workstation version (P1 Gen 2) is also affected. forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Extreme-Gen-2-missing-keystrokes/td-p/4569936
New Lenovo X1 Extreme Gen 2 owner here. I can confirm on this problem. I also notice missing keystrokes on my new device. Apart from that, the CPU emits a strange noise, similar to coil whine, until you disable the CPU Power Management in the UEFI / BIOS. I'm waiting for Lenovo to take action on those issues, but can't really recommend the device until then.
Is it just me or did he not mention that the gen 2 also has up to 4TB of storage and he didn't mention support for the 9th gen i9 processor at all? Nor did he mention that the device can get a 4K OLED with multi touch? he seemed to imply it only has a non-touch 4K.
He did say if you chose the 4K matte, you would be giving up the touch on the 4K glossy. Your other points are valid though. I think maxing out at an octacore instead of a hexacore affects certain buyers between gen 1 and gen 2. That seems to be the deciding factor in my opinion.
Would of bought this to replace my crap xps 15 but waiting for a significant chipset upgrade from intel, nvidia or hopefully see amd 7nm chips hit these Ultrabooks
Is there a point to this laptop anymore when laptops like the mag 15 (1660ti or 2070 maxq and better cooling) exist? Dimensions x1 gen2 14.2″ x 9.7″ x 0.7″ vs mag 14.03" x 9.19" x 0.80". And if the goal is portability wouldnt the msi prestige 14 be a better option with a 1650 maxq 12.55 x 8.46 x 0.63" ?
@@KianOntong13 build in the mag and msi are equal. Keyboard is subjective, but ill give it to the x1 as i like that keyboard a lot, the track point i think ruins the track pad by making it smaller. But you have the small percentage of die hards that dont want it to die out.
Well. You should try, because I have a problem and I have X1 Extreme gen 1. And after connecting this dock, the monitor blinks terribly, several attempts, maybe 15-30 minutes, and then stabilizes. There are times when the screen does not jump, wakes up after 10-30 minutes and flashes for 20-30 minutes. I do not know what's going on. I have already done some updates, firmware and the problem still occurs ... I'm slowly losing hope, I admit I am a bit disappointed with Lenovo support - it is known in the forum that there is some bug, a lot of people have a problem. Anyway, I think they should know about this, stop buying this workstation with thunderbolt3.
@@MatthewMoniz I think you should be interested in this problem, because Lenovo has been silent about it for a long time. The main problem is with the P52/P53/P72/P73/P1/P1 2/X1E/X1E gen2 ... with this dock. i think this laptop is great but i think the P53 edges it out a little bit , with some slight upgrades to some ports and option of more HDs
that model is quite a bit bigger. It comes down to the portability question.
P53 or P53s?
P53 is not that portable, and some perople report bad cooling because of single pipe cooling.
It’s slightly heavier, but for that you get more , cooling ah that can be said about any laptop really it becomes relative when compared accurately. Haven’t looked at ‘s’ model but I’m sure it’s slightly different. Either way portable is about more than weight
@@MarkZanghi Slightly heavier? 4 lbs vs 6 lbs?
ThomasRBA 2lbs , that much of a strain? Not really. form vs function
If you haven't still decided by any means avoid 4k! It sucks battery like hell. it nearly halves battery runtime!
I like ThinkPad but I do not understand how the ThinkPad X1 carbon put the sound up that I thought was excellent, and the ThinkPad Extreme the sound is still below the chassis, they should make the change since the sound is criticized
Is it a good (and I mean a very good) option for apps that require a good graphic card like autodesk programs (architecture), adobe programs (graphic design) etc etc?
lol man this one is too good for that, i mean you dont need this, you can get the lower spec one and still have too good performance for these progs
No one else found the swapped position of the Ctrl and Fn keys annoying? :/
I do, but you can swap the functionality of these buttons in the BIOS, so no big deal
So this Model would stay strong even if i work with a lot of effects in Premiere Pro and after effects ? No Frame Drops etc. in the preview window ?
Thinkpads from lenovo has very poor design for stability. You will notice a lot of cracks appearing on the body of it once you start using it within weeks of buying a brand new laptop.Search in the web for cracks on thinkpads. A lot of coustomers are facing this issue.
I'm choosing between X1 extreme gen 2 and razer blade 15 advanced or blade studio. Which one do you recommend?
X1 has better warranty service and QC. I'd only consider a Razer is you're in the USA
Cenot4ph I tried twi Razer blade laptops and they experience bsod everyday, sometimes twice a day.
Going to college for business and computer science. Debating between the X1 carbon gen 7 or the X1 extreme gen 2. Any thoughts?
I have x1 carbon gen 7 and with full hd display battery last about 10hrs which will be suitable for a whole day at university and it is significantly lighter than x1e g2. 16gb or RAM is more than enough for tasks you will be doing at the university. For some high intensive CPU workload both computers get hot so typing should be an issue. Want to have CPU workload get a spare keyboard for both laptops.
you say no need to get the gen 2 compared to gen 1 - but can you get gen 1 with the same 400 nits screen ?
I don't always click first, but when I see a Matthew Moniz video,
I always click fast.
Haha thanks man
WHY CAN'T THEY PUT A FREAKING 1660ti IN IT?!!!
Getting this laptop for 1600
3yr insurance
1080p screen
32gb ram
1tb ssd
I think it's a steal but hard to tell with Lenovo's bazaro pricing website sales
I7 9850h
AT LEAST use the same wallpaper when comparing displays 🙈🤣 I'd do a half black, half white wallpaper during those seconds
How much in real time does the battery hold and cost to take it??
I like displays with Matt :))
Does this laptop support HHD and SSD both ? is storage upgradable ?
Carbon look only available on the 4K model.
Worth it in 2023?
He touched the internals
Thanks Matthew. Q/ What about thermal throttling?
It thermals to reduce temps but not below base clock. It mostly power throttles at certain temperatures to keep the cpu cool
I have an X1 Extreme Gen 2 but my lid doesn't have the carbon fiber finish.
ya me too, its only for the 4k models
@@maximblue101 ahhhhh makes sense
Man still contemplating this or the Macbook 16 inch or the surface book 3 when that gets announced.
Honestly I got the MBP 16 with i9 and 5500m. Returned it after a week due to poor performance and thermal issues. Loud fans, really hot when connected to external display, etc. Also it's a lot heavier....and more expensive
What does it start at price wise?
Will the put holes in the box for you? Oh you meant mate
Here is a video of the problem. ruclips.net/video/WsqDufKsEOk/видео.html
Thank you for the video.
Hey Matthew can u do a review on the HP Spectra???
Is it just me or did he not mention that the gen 2 also has up to 4TB of storage and he didn't mention support for the 9th gen i9 processor at all? Nor did he mention that the device can get a 4K OLED with multi touch? he seemed to imply it only has a non-touch 4K.
He did say if you chose the 4K matte, you would be giving up the touch on the 4K glossy. Your other points are valid though. I think maxing out at an octacore instead of a hexacore affects certain buyers between gen 1 and gen 2. That seems to be the deciding factor in my opinion.
@@ruzaroos yeah, it's like he totally neglected to mention the most important and distinguishing features of the gen 2
Why do they have this proprietary charging slot still? I have a USB type C on my T480 which is older.
this versus surface laptop 3?
Matt Display, that made me smile. 👍🏽 from me.
This would be a great buy if the 3rd gen came with a 16:10 display. Lets prayyy
Crossing fingers it does!
I think its the specific features like keyboard, tracking nipple and the build
@@KianOntong13 build in the mag and msi are equal. Keyboard is subjective, but ill give it to the x1 as i like that keyboard a lot, the track point i think ruins the track pad by making it smaller. But you have the small percentage of die hards that dont want it to die out.
the thinkpad nipple.. "the only nipple I let my friends touch" xD
Do you have problem with a blinking screen? With Dock Thunderbolt 3 Workstation?
Not sure I'd have to try!
I recommend that you read this: forums.lenovo.com/t5/Displays-Options-and-Accessories/Screens-flickering-with-Thunderbolt-3-Dock/td-p/4340774/page/7
Any thoughts on Lenovo being Chinese owned, given Hauwei press coverage?
Can I do programming and game develoment
Should I get this or the x1 carbon gen 7?
Extreme is nicer imo
It is the SAME laptop, just with a cpu thats maybe 2% faster and a different wifi card and different display options

Can't wait until I order mine November 1st.. Lenovo Thailand has a special right now where you can build a gen 2 x1 up with 32gb of ram, and 2 ssd's in raid 0 for $1500 USD.
I wish they made that kind of 80Wh battery with normal specs so I can enjoy the battery life
You can buy it with a FHD display of you want better battery life
is it just me or the audio's about 5 frames ahead of the video?
Can I run macOS on this?
Matt, I live this laptop but....I can't afford this!! Lol
Haha ya its not cheap but it’s expected. Maybe one day! Thanks Josh for stopping by
Only the 4K model has that carbon fiber lid look, the regular 1080P does not have that
