AX860 - all wires are black and the connector is two separate ones of 18+10 pins, that is 28 pins, not 24 (even though the text on the back side of the power supply days ”24 pin ATX".

    • @abccde3832

@@Mina_be 24 pin that plugs into MOBO is standardized. So that means manufacturers have to put PS ON wire on the same place no matter the brand/model/color of wires etc.
If we are looking at 24pin from back perspective (cables are leading into 24pin connector side) the PS ON wire is 4th from the left going toward right.

this is truly a test just to test for it to "turn on" since there is really no load on it at all. I have had issues of really high end PSU's running just fine all the time, but when the power hammer comes down in full effect under massive load they crap out. No real way to test unless you have expensive equipment.....especially anything 1.5kw and beyond!

This was probably a great video 7 years ago. Corsair needs to do a newer one with the AX series PSU's. I'm seeing a lot of people - myself included - online in forums having problems using a bridging plug or jumping the motherboard plug with a paper clip to test fans, water loops, etc.
I'm using an AX1200i and I cannot get it to power up using a Bridge plug. I checked the PSU's specs online and the bridging plug is jumping the correct pins on the plug. None of the fans connected to will power up either when jumping. I plug it back into the motherboard, HDD's, etc. and it powers on.

Watching this in 2020 and still super helpful! I was taking apart an old custom PC, looking to upgrade the parts and whatnot. Tried this tip with the paperclip on my Corsair CX 430 and found out it worked like a charm. This was after trying to power on the PC when it was all together, so maybe the issue is with the motherboard or something else.

  • @ayporos

    NOTE:
Your PSU fan will NOT turn on if you have a PSU that will perform silent (fanless) up to a certain load such as the AX1500i.
This is why it's always a good idea to hook up a fan to a molex connector.
(The AX1500i has a self-test button but that's beside this particular point.)

This was a extremely helpful video. I disconnected everything (even all the RAM) from my motherboard except for the CPU, CPU cooler, and chassis fans. Then I unplugged the 24 pin connector did the paperclip trick. LEDs and fans started working whereas they didn't work before. The problem seems to be with my motherboard since it's very unlikely that CPUs go bad.

no this is actually a fairly standard procedure, it isn't stupid, and it isn't dangerous if you know what you are doing, dont just jam metal objects into any pc component, however testing a psu in such a way the video demonstrates.
however something that bothers me is that people put too much trust in "the guy who sold me the pc/parts" most of the time this guy is just a store clerk, he knows the name and price of pc parts, and sometimes a couple specs and requirements

The pin layout must be the same, no matter what PSU, since it has to plug in to various motherboards and they all have to work the same.
The video doesn't show the pins very well, but Corsair website does: 4th and 5th pin from the right, when you're looking at the connector, and the locking clip is on the bottom.
This video needs to add a diagram to show which pins to be shorted.

For the users that have the HX 1200, this PSU has 10+18 pins instead of 10+14. In order to jump start PSU's with this kind of layout: Have the 18 pin connector with the lock clip looking upwards, from the top row of the pins count from right to left, you need to put a wire or clip in the pins 4 and 5.

Old, but still relevant. My PSU came with a self-tester, which basically takes the place of the paperclip. You just slide it on so the black cord curves onto the green cord (easy a pie, really) and then plug in the PSU and turn it on. Works like a charm.
I didn't have to plug in anything to it and the fan started up. I assume that's enough to know it works, but I'll likely talk to my uncle about it and find out for sure.
    Great video.
...now if I could just figure out how to get these decals to stay on my metal case. I wonder if static electricity causes them to pop off in certain spots or if it's just that the adhesive is too weak. I don't know if it's even worth keeping, since I might want to remove them one day and anything permanent would prevent that or damage the case...

Is it safe to leave it plugged in like that for years at a time or would the paperclip be a fire hazard (or damage power supply). It would be nice to be able to recycle low watt power supplies this way, if its safe.

should be, i have seen lots of people powering stuff with PSUs, just use a bit of wire to bridge across or cut the green wire and attach it to a black cable

This test actually works! As for those with black wiring, all the "colors" are labeled in the owner's manual, so its easy to test it for that as well. I was using a Seasonic 750 Watt Modular Powersupply, so I can't vouch for other companies.

My old TX550M not only has black cables. Also the pin layout is lacking in the manual.

I make the bridge between the 2 connectors as show and the output tensions are right (3,3V 5V and 12V) and the rgb fans turn on (only fans connected as in attached image). But when I connect the PSU to the Mobo (ASrock Z97 gen 6/Intel i7 4790x/ first attempt - ASrock B450 pro4/AMD Ryzen 5 2600x second attempt) NO POWER at any time. So the voltage is OK but the Watt power NO.

Paperclip test. Prodding capacitors and sparks flying came to mind.
Funny they don't mention the danger of destroying the PSU by plugging the thing in and activating it without any power OUTPUT.

Wow, computers are really complicated, yet fun and simple to use with proper skills.
I'm having problem with kernel log power error ID 41, my computer turns itself off and becomes inresponsible while playing games or using programmes that take more than 1GB of RAM, eventhough I have 2 GB of RAM.

I have rm 850x psu which just start giving sudden shut down and dont turn on until you wait for 5 to 15 minutes. On game it always shuts down pc and sometimes on normal use but more interesting is vs550 runs perfectly even on games no issues at all.

Got a CX750M PSU around a year ago, and it failed already, actually disappointed in this. brought it due to the brand name, calculator said id be fine with the wattage with what im running, but for some reason it decided to over heat and filled my livingroom with a lovely burnt smell.

I was playing WoW and mine just shut down. I disconnected everyting. After that took the tower to the living room, open it and make sure that everything was connected properly. Everything was fine after a while I plugged to the wall and it was getting power but wouldn't stay on so I turned the switch on the Corsair on and off while i was pressing the turn on button on the tower and it worked.

@costi08 Or get a power supply tester. You can get them for $10 in some computer shops, probably cheaper on ebay.

***** The problem is mostly with shorted diodes, not necessarily the main diodes used for DC rectification though (if a cheap PSU) but any diode in the PSU could be shorted.

If you have a high end PSU like the RMx, HX, or AX series, then the fan will automatically shut off when under low load. It might work.

so when the fan spins but you hear a sparking noise from inside the box, that's a blown psu, right? (TX650W from 2009 here)

Can you tell me which Pin Connector you're having inside a Corsair HX1000i PSU and which Fan Diameters and Sizes it Supports? Just in case i want to install a different Fan
    For Example:
Could i replace the Stock Fan with an 4-Pin PWM 140x140x25 Fan?

Actually no. When that happened the PSU was OFF, but I left the plug ON. Which still shouldn't have shocked me, but I guess the current stayed even when it was off for a couple of seconds.

This might be a stupid question... I'm troubleshooting a HX750... when I do the paper clip method, the fan on the PU turns on and the cpu fan turns on but after 2 seconds the fan on the PU stops spinning but the cou fan continues to spin...shouldn't the PU fan continue to spin as well?
