My mom has this idea that since christians are the majority in the US, then they should be appealed to simply because there's more of them then non-christians. I keep telling her that that was not the reason why this nation was founded. It's not "Freedom for the majority", it's "Freedom for all". The comment that usually stops her in her tracks is: "Would you still support that if you weren't in the majority?"

Been saying this for years, religion and school should not mix. Religion is something you should do in your private life, not on school nor on your work. I am known to hate religion in general, mostly for what it stands for. But that does not mean I attack people for it just because I have a different opinion. Yet those that are religious are very often aggressive towards those that are not, which Neil also makes clear in this video.
I couldn't care less what you are willing to accept as the truth according to your religion, I rather learn the actual truth then fairy tales. Let me put it this way, if a group playing dungeons and dragons (for example) comes to a church and tries to replace your believes with theirs. Wouldn't that offend and put a wrong picture of your world in place? Now that same group goes to a school in your area and tries the same, they teach their BS believes based on that game and not allow the actual truth. Wouldn't that be offensive as well? You go to school to learn the truth so you can benefit from it later in life. Get your papers so you can get a decent job once you leave school. Religion is NOT part of any regular job. Only religious related jobs, nun, pope, or what ever you want to call it, those don't even need it. You can just walk in and say 'hey i want to become a nun/monk' and they will allow you to do so, you will learn the religious part while being there. So religion and schools, no that is definitely not a good thing to have.

Religion and school can mix, if mixed correctly. Here in Finland, we are taught about all the major religions of the world and old mythologies. Religion is it's own class along with mathematics and whatnot. There's no teachers that go around telling kids what they should believe in, we take a look at the history of religion objectively and if someone decides to believe in a certain religion, that's their choice. Of course, it's no surprise that the majority of the students end up being agnostic or atheist, at least back when i was in school.

That's basically what happens in the Netherlands as well, yet if you do not believe in a god, you are often trown out of the classroom during that period of time. Which is basically rascism.

In history they only teach about certain people and societies..usually the ones who can kill and conquered the most..usually with an agenda to promote there society that’s doing the teachings ways. If they had a religious class they’d just do the same. Talk about the ones that have the most followers. For example a western school would probably just talk about the abrahamic religions Hinduism and bhuddism. That is unfair as each person has a right to make or have there own religion and views of god. None should get priority over another in terms of what’s talked about on tv public holidays or it might persuade people to join that religion as it’s done in countries like the USA. People shouldn’t decide to believe in god because it’s part of a popular religion. It would just promote or make it seem that god is or can be found in a religion.

Thank you for that. I was raised Christian, but have yet to settle on any belief system beyond the cycle of life, as well as natural selection. I have a lot of religious people that I work with ask me if I hate religions because I've turned my back on Christianity, when in fact I agree with you. I respect other religions and why individuals believe in it, but I don't want any part of it and to not have it shoved down my throat. Like Neil deGrasse Tyson said, we need to peacefully coexist.

I'm a Christian, and I completely agree with Mr. Tyson. Religion should be a private matter, staying the church, synagogue, mosque, etc. Science and Faith should not collide, but peacefully coexist. And I'm tired of people who take their faith to extreme levels and twist it to their own desires. Those kind of people are the ones that make the news and put a bad label on religion as a whole.

refers to both the study of modes of reasoning (which are valid and which are fallacious) and the use of valid reasoning. In the latter sense, logic is used in most intellectual activities, including philosophy and science, but in the first sense is studied primarily in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, semantics, and computer science. It examines general forms that arguments may take. In mathematics, it is the study of valid inferences within some formal language. To be clear.

that's a HUGE generalization. I happen to be religious and I'm not like that. I want to know everything, but sometimes I do give up in my pursuit, not because I want to feel warm and fuzzy, but let's face it, Science is hard and complex. Everyone should be doing their best to poke their boundaries and expand their knowledge. My point is if religious people don't like science's current hypothesis, then they should try creating one which supports their view or find a place for it in their beliefs.

Religion in general(not only christianity)should be taught in schools as information. Not as something that is considered true or false. It should be like "religions claim this and this and we give you basic knowledge about the religions of the world and their history and branches and their possible arguments with modern knowledge".Whoever likes them and finds interesting stuff in them can study them further on his own"That would be a good school.

That is part of why I am not affiliated with any political parties. Those in charge of the party or the church use your membership as political capital for what they believe. What you believe is unimportant. While politicians are smart enough to know that a church (like a union) won't swing all its members, there is power in numbers.

Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. 1 Timothy 6:1-2 (This verse was used as justification for Slavery in the American south.)

If we truly had the option of choosing whether or not to sin,
not every human would be guilty of it.
No Christian has the liberty of saying they have never sinned,
because (according to the doctrine) everyone is "born" in sin.
I don't think its impossible that a person(s) exist/s somewhere, who has never "sinned" in their life.
But that person or those people can't say they have never sinned.
    It's not about choice.

So natural selection is still working, but the time frame for any measurable difference is MASSIVE.
Humanity is that way because, back when we were developing, empathy was successful. It allowed the bonding of people to advance progression of the species many times over.
It could, in a way, be thought of as a vestigial organ, depending on how you view empathy. It was once useful, and if now one thinks it isn't, we just haven't gotten rid of it yet.
Actually natural selection is very inefficient.

I never said he was speaking of schools in the 1700's. You have just shown how you missed my point. My point is that the school system was religion based. Degrasse speaks of schools as if they never had religious history. In some public schools, creationism is taught for this very reason. Degrasse's talk would have made more sense if he had mentioned the history of the public school system and how it taught religion alongside liberal arts. Religon can't infiltrate? No such thing.

I don't understand why people are so polar on arguments like this. I personally am a Christian, however, I think both sides fail to hear eachothers arguments. Religious people should see how science works with their faith and scientific people should look to see if there is any merit to what the religious people assert. Obviously, some religious arguments can't be proven or tested scientifically, which is where no matter which side you are on, you have to be prepared to take something on faith.

If you're going of the Epic of Gilgamesh, then no, Gilgamesh didn't have a little Noah's Ark type thing. not to defend slavery but I see people pick on things like this all the time. What Exodus is calling "slavery" is more like "indentured servitude." It contains a list of how the master and "slave" should treat each other. The daughter thing is speaking in terms of marriage and how they should respectively treat each other. Hosea is speaking of God lifting his protection on Samaria and what their fate is/will be. These are just a few of the things commonly misinterpreted.

The Constitution of the United States of America changed how education and religion interact. Last time I checked, the Constitution was still in effect, right? No public government-mandated institution, like a public school, can promote any religion. That is what the establishment clause says, and that is how the SCOTUS interprets the Constitution. Since the Bill of Rights was incorporated into the Constitution on December 15, 1791.
We made a law. People do that.

    Yes, that was my answer.
And amendments don't necessarily help with clarity of the Constitution; they're just additions to the law. And when was the last time there was one of those? I will admit though, it would be interesting if religious doctrine had judges and lawyers to help set rulings on interpretations and such.

If you have no home, no money, no family, etc, you could become a slave for a period (biblically 6-7 years). In that time you were supposed to be cared for, clothed, fed. There weren't "jobs" so to speak in those days. What Exodus is defining is the way a manager/what-have-you should treat their employees.modern paralell? McDonalds... Some break the rules though..

So you determine it's not literal by rationalizing that it isn't, or is there some other form of determination? If it's the first, this seems related to a quote from Plato:
"Is the pious loved by the gods because it is pious, or is it pious because it is loved by the gods?"

Sins are a product of conscious creatures with free will. Would you rather have consciousness and freedom to chose, or no sin at all but be a drone?

In a way, you are making my point. You and I have a moral code. You pick the parts of your Bible that fit your code and call them wisdom or holiness or whatever, then look at the parts you don't like and discard them. I have read the whole Bible (except the begats) more than once. I realized that MY morality was (overall) better than that in the Bible. So rather than believe the parts that agreed with me were somehow from god, I came to the realization that I did not need that book.

Exodus 21:7-11 About selling (your own daughter to another man)
When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21

The funny thing is this; most atheists think the religious follow their respective holy books completely without question, but that is just a small, ignorant, vocal minority. One who is comfortable in their beliefs has no problem questioning it from time to time.
And I'm more Christian Deist/rational theist than anything else.
"Earn your respect?" If that is the only reason you can't respect it or it's practitioners, then you're just as close-minded as that minority I mentioned.

Well, I was trying to bridge the gap between the 2 arguments, and I don't need you calling my religion names. I was respectful to both sides, both of which I partially agree. If you don't want to believe there can be a middle-ground that's your prerogative. I just was just trying to let you know that not everyone is like you perceive.

If you review the equation for quantum fluctuations you will see that it is dependent on change in time. But if there is no time there is no change. This is exactly my point. All modeling equations stop working at 10E−36 seconds after the Big Bang. The inflationary theory deals with time from this point to 10e−32 seconds it is here fluctuation comes into play.

There was only slight breeding between the Neanderthals and Home Sapiens, and Cro Magnon was neither specifically. Cro Magnon is like "Java man" or "Peking man"
I know evolution VERY well. I read several of Richard Dawkins books from cover to cover, as well as the commentary book "Richard Dawkins : How a Scientist Changed the Way We Think" and many books on sociobiology and evolutionary psychology, by E.O. Wilson, David Barash, Matt Ridley, Steven Pinker, Robin Baker, etc.

First off, it says creator, which doesn't mean God, secondly, Tyson said the CONSTITUTION doesn't mention God, which it doesn't, at all. The declaration of Independence and the Constitution are 2 completely different things.

All I'm saying is I have a direct line to the creator of the universe.
    And I can tell you:
what people he wants you to bed with,
    what sex positions he hates,
that he cares which bits of your penis you saw away/have had sawed away for you,
what food to eat + on what days,
    that he hates masturbation,
and how he can convict you of thought crime.
It's so humbling (for me), being able to tell people I'm right about issues (like gay marriage), by divine authority. So hard being a Christian.

Evolution should be taught in schools. Creationism history should be mentioned in psychology classes as a logical step in evolution of intelligence and proof for brain's natural tendency for delusion without the use of hallucinogens.

You asked a question and I gave an answer. And I'm not putting words in your mouth; I can only go off what's typed out on my screen here. At 3:11 am CST.
Time and tiredness aside, my point still stands. One can still follow something that calls for them to seek a better understanding of it. The U.S. Constitution is the same; it's rather old, and we have people in place to help better understand and interpret it as the times roll on.

Bable, I agree with you on most of what your saying. But values/morals fall into the realm of psychology, neuroscience and biology. They can be answered through a Scientific method. I would suggest watching a TED talks by Sam Harris on this issue, also , his book. The Moral Landscape.
