Do these need to be used with uplocking reel seats or could you also get away with downlocking? Just wondering as I am about to build myself a new euro nymphing rod. Really fancy one of these reels
hello, i guide in the top of the south NZ, havnt seen/played with one of these yet, i can see they could be usefull here for picking up excess line after hooking up, a lot of clients tend to just stand and strip/play the fish, we kiwis get the loose line on the reel as soon as we can so we can move n chase down the fish, so i think for that purpose they would be fantastic! downside for here would be they need a winding knob. thanks londoner your channel is 1 of very few i watch
Hi Great video, informative. What’s the top line rating you can fish? I fish for coarse fish using fly fishing techniques. Would the reel handle a 12 LB. carp? Interesting video as I say and for people who do like to explore all technical aspects of fly fishing like me; an interesting investment. Regards David
It would handle a carp that big but you'd be wise to use gel spun backing and cut some of the running line. Also, tighten the drag right up when you put backing on to get it very tightly packed. The third reel I bought had a 6wt line on and I'd say that's the tops really.
I've caught carp for years using vivarelli reels. adjust the drag before you fish. pump the rod and take in the slack line and repeat until fish is in the net. see "The Great Lakes of NYC" my blog
@@BILLHENRY239 O wow! That’s very useful to hear. I would not want to unnecessarily make a decision to purchase a real then find it can’t handle the weight. Thanks for this information. Regards David
I couldn't go back and with they'd manufacture something for bigger fare, Baetis do but the quality isn't as good. And yes, I reach for a non existent handle when returning to manual reels.
Thorough clear breakdown - thank you.
super popular reel over here in France - great for taking up the slack on fast drifts
I have used vivarelli reels for more than 20 years! I have caught carp, pike not just trout with the vivarelli reels

Use with whatever reel style you want! Doesn't matter really.
@flyfishinglondoner brilliant thanks

I know how good they must be because you went from your first to 3 in about 2 months!
@@dominicrussell2882 And I drove to Cambs to buy my second one!
No going back once you try one mate. 👍
How much do you hate reaching for the handle when using a regular reel? 😂
