  • Smashing Pumpkin's "Disarm" (1994) reflects the volatile relationship the band's frontman, Billy Corgan, had with his parents growing up. The song is a beautiful take on vengeance and the strength required to end the cycle of abuse and violence within the family.
Billy attempts to "disarm" his parents' violence and abuse with a smile which requires him to mature at a young age ("so old in my shoes"). In the midst of trauma, he considers a violent act of vengeance: killing his parents in their sleep. However, he realizes he was programmed to respond with violence ("the killer in me is the killer in you"), and to commit this act would only continue a vicious cycle.
Instead of committing a brutal act, Billy chose to respond with a song and a smile. What he chose is his voice.
Fun fact: This song was banned in the U.K. by the BBC due to lyrical content because some view the song's phrase "cut that little child" as a reference to abortion. As a result, the song received little airplay on British radio.
