Taemin (pronounced Tay-min) is a legend among other Korean artists. As a soloist he’ll celebrate a 10th anniversary this year (just like you guys, congrats!) and he’s one of the most respected and influential artists in Korea, so much so that a huge part of younger and even older idols look up to him and consider him the biggest inspiration. Your MJ reference is spot on, as he was the reason why very young Taemin decided to become an artist in the first place. Taemin is considered one of the best dancers in Korea and over the years he managed to create his own, very distinctive music and performance style. I really hope you’ll check out his other amazing title tracks like Want, Move, Criminal and his most recent - Guilty. Thank you for your reaction!

TAEMIN is not only a great singer or dancer, he is also a very intelligent artist and always tries to give us something more than just good music. ADVICE was his last music video before he went into the army and most of us think it is his response to the hate.
I recommend more of his songs, including the b-sides.

There is a lot you need to know regarding Taemin's (TAY min) music in order to grasp it, you can't just take everything at face value -- not the lyrics, not the imagery, not the message. Taemin's art has layers of meaning. You must interpret every single aspect of the MV/song. He's always telling a story that goes much deeper than the lyrics imply. Every image in the MV, every movement in the choreo, and every word in the lyrics is significant, even the costumes and how he enunciates the syllables in the song. Taemin is all about the details.
That story often gives us a glimpse into Taemin's personal life story, so rarely do the lyrics and message convey a superficial love story about a painful breakup between a couple, rather they are about some aspect of Taemin's real past life experience. Prior to and after an MV is released, Taemin will give us snippets and clues through VLIVES, Bubble, other social media, and various interviews telling us what he has been reading, what philosophies he has been exploring (he LOVES exploring different philosophies), and what is going on in his life. As fans, we must listen closely and pick up these clues to help us piece together what the newly released song/MV really means underneath the surface layer. The longer you have been a fan of his, the more you know and understand him. Taemin has been through A LOT over his 16 years in the business, both with his group SHINee and as a soloist and not all of it good either. His music is a way to express all that, share it with us, and it can act as a type of catharsis for him.
For "Advice", he told us it was an epilogue of sorts for his 2020, 2-Part album, "Never Gonna Dance Again" (NGDA) Acts 1 & 2 (Each "Act" was an album with 9 songs). "Advice" was released two weeks prior to his military enlistment in 2021. "NGDA" Act 1's title track was "Criminal" where Taemin explored the concept of Stockholm syndrome with Taemin playing both the "criminal" (the worldly immoral temptations of fame) and the victim (trying to stay true to his Christian worldview) within his own mind -- dueling egos, Despite the lyrics giving the impression of a toxic relationship between a couple, it was actually the toxic relationship between the two struggling egos within Taemin's own mind.
In Act 2 of NGDA, Taemin played with the philosophical concept of Plato's Theory of Forms which states that any created being (form) cannot create itself. Only an outside power/being can be the creator and only that creator (Messiah) can make or be perfection. This philosophy fits in perfectly with Taemin's Christian worldview. Therefore, in the "IDEA" MV, we see the epic battle between the "criminal" and the "victim" of Act 1, through visions of heaven (victim) and hell (criminal), in Taemin's search for a resolution to this duality within him and find the perfect version of Taemin.
All that brings us to "Advice" where a weary, battle-scarred Taemin emerges seemingly embracing/merging both identities back into one, realizing no one can be perfect, and making a stand to not listen to the collective one "Advice" (company, saesangs/toxic fans, peers, etc.), but instead only listen to his own "Advice" regardless of anyone else. He will be TAEMIN, forging his own path, and doing what he wants.
I hope you will continue to explore Taemin's music and really get to know him. There really is no other artist like him. He genuinely loves his fans or "partners" (Jjakoongs) as he calls us, and he is always striving to get to know us as much as he wants us to really know him by sharing his innermost thoughts with us through his artistry. His music is not for the faint of heart. You must work at it to really understand it and him.

Here is a little background on Taemin. He entered SM Entertainment at the tender age of 11 after being snatched up at an extremely difficult open, Saturday audition. This audition is traditionally attended by thousands of hopefuls, however, over the years, only about 8 have had to fortune to be chosen, Taemin was one of them. At that age, Taemin was already an accomplished, self-taught street dancer ( His audition video: ruclips.net/video/ivxYp4nZ3aY/видео.html ). Known primarily for his extreme popping/locking/fluidity abilities, Taemin is widely known as the best dancer in Kpop: ruclips.net/video/Qo18L3_Kc0Y/видео.html . The man can literally independently pop/lock each and every muscle in his body to the beat of the music. At the age of 14 he debuted with his group, SHINee in 2008 (as in "shiny" = "receiving light"), as their main dancer.
While Taemin was a phenomenal dancer right off the bat, he couldn't sing due to immature vocal cords. He was even told by one vocal coach to give up and stick with dancing because he'd never be a singer. However, in a group with power vocal machines, Taemin refused to give up. Through Taemin's legendary workaholic nature, sheer determination and stubbornness, he started to get more lines in SHINee's songs. This leap in improvement was also assisted by his SHINee brothers' help -- Onew & Jonghyun, two of the most powerful vocalists in Kpop to this day. By 2012, Taemin was belting it out with his SHINee brothers and in 2013 when main vocalist, Jonghyun, was in an accident, it was Taemin who covered his parts in "Why So Serious". The proof was in the pudding at that point, and at only 21 YO, SM made the decision to debut Taemin as their first-ever male soloist from an active group in 2014. His solo debut song, "Danger" showed his transformation from boy to man: ruclips.net/video/aNNM4fh7ekA/видео.html Taemin's sheer charisma and ability to enthrall fans just with his mere presence made him an instant success.
Unfortunately, in the midst of his success in both his legendary SHINee group and solo career, what many didn't know was the level of sexualization Taemin was subjected to within the industry as a whole. As a very young, impressionable child thrust into the chaotic world of fame, Taemin was rigidly controlled by those who thought it was high comedy to dress him up as a girl because he was such a "pretty" and "cute" child. He was told he was prettier than most girls in the industry. Despite Taemin vociferously stating he was a "MAN", the torment didn't stop. It got so bad that his SHINee brother, Jonghyun (a musical genius we miss terribly), penned a song for Taemin, "Pretty Boy", that includes the line "I am more than the imaginations in your head." While fans had picked up on what was going on, the song, an instant hit, also illuminated more clearly how fed up both Taemin and his SHINee brothers were.
However, in true Taemin fashion, he then turned that "androgynous" identity to his advantage. In 2017 his title song, "Move", broke the standard cultural norms with the first, most blatant example of an androgynous theme in an MV. It dovetailed perfectly with Taemin's determination to end gender segregation among performers. For Taemin, "dance" is a verb; not a gender. There was no reason to segregate genders in performances. Taemin used all girls for his backup dancers for the MV and they all dressed androgynously, proving that men and women can dance the same way and make it look enticing and flawless. Today, "Move" is still his most talked about song and a favorite among fans for MANY reasons. As Taemin told Ten of Wavy when working with him through SuperM, find something unique about yourself that stands out and exploit it to make your mark (Paraphrasing here. You can see where he says this in the mini-doc, "The Artist: Taemin", ruclips.net/video/m2_MVBxmdyc/видео.html
Taemin's latest MV/title song of 2023, "Guilty," is his most personal and intimate revelation of just how much his life was in turmoil through being controlled by the industry and possible the initial part of his military service which caused the military itself to move Taemin to the public service department in fear for his mental health. Once again, Taemin used his music to purge his thoughts and alert others to what happens in such institutions. For this MV/Song, Taemin used the books "Demian" by Hermann Hesse and "Eroticism" by French philosopher Georges Bataille as his inspiration. I would recommend this MV highly as it is gut wrenching as well as an auditory, vocal, and visual feast. The production is superb as always with Taemin and his choice of integrating a 30-piece string orchestra into the composition adds to the haunting effect of the music.
This need for Taemin to make statements through music and action is a trademark of SHINee as a whole. As one of the original experimental SM groups, they were not supposed to last long, however SHINee proved them wrong since they are still going strong after 16 years. SHINee has started more trends within Kpop than any other group in the industry. Their courage to break through stereotypes and courage to try things unheard of in the music industry is a major reason why Kpop has developed into what it is today. They have mentored such popular junior groups as EXO and NCT, as well as groups outside Kpop like BTS who were told by their manager to emulate SHINee as their model to gain success. There is a valid reason why SHINee is still revered and greatly respected in the industry as a whole today. All thanks to SHINEE: Onew, Jonghyun (RIP), Key, Minho, & Taemin.

They happen to be friends with the SHINee members and Jimin looks up to Taemin. Just because SHINee is from a bigger company and at the time BigHit wasn't that big people look down on BTS but they are just as great as the rest of the kpop groups. @@MsSherri13 No one is looking down on BTS with this comment. All she is doing is mentioning how Suga said on his show to Taemin that when BTS first debuted they were told they needed to kill it on the stage the way SHINee did. And Taemin even mentioned how BTS is one of the few groups that has the same amount of passion as SHINee when it comes to performing, etc.
Why does the mere mention of BTS always get people so defensive? Nothing that was said in this comment was a slight on any of the hard work or talent that BTS has and it has nothing to do with the size of the company that either group comes from.
On the contrary I think the commenter was paying respects to BTS by saying SHINee was an inspiration to them, just like 95% of all idols who are in the industry today.
That doesn't mean that BTS aren't talented in their own right. Everyone has people they look up to and take inspiration from, but that doesn't diminish them as an artist. SHINee too lists plenty of idols, artists and groups they look up to and find inspiration in, but that doesn't mean they are less of an artist because of it.

An absolute legend! Both Taemin and his group SHINee. It would be cool to see yall react to his song "Idea" because it is very unique or "Guilty" which is one of his most recent releases.
A cool tidbit about Taemin is he actually debuted at the age of 14 and the youngest of the group. he was already an excellent dancer, but as he was still going through puberty his voice wasn't the strongest so he barely got any lines in the songs. But he worked really hard to improve and actually became the first member to release solo albums! Today he is renowned for his unique vocals, gender-neutral style, sex appeal, and incredible dancing. He is one of the most successful male solo artists in Korea and often considered one of the single best dancers in Kpop, a very dance focused industry.
Again I say, an absolute legend!

Taemin is the best dancer in all of K-pop... I always say that it is art in movement, no one moves like him. With his single Move he introduced genderless dance into K-pop. He is part of Shinee together with Onew, key Minho and Jonghyun (unfortunately who passed away in 2017). Shinee are a second generation K-pop group and have revolutionized K-pop (they introduced dance practices, they brought the deep house genre. .etc), they debuted in 2008 and are still active today. It is difficult to recommend a song as many have become iconic over time (Replay, Lucifer, Sherlock, View, don't call me...) Each member has a solo career. I recommend you listen to a song by Jinghyun Y si fuera ella ... her voice is still considered one of the most beautiful in k-pop today

There are a couple of K-Pop performers who are just special, and Taemin is one of them. Yes, he's Idol of Idols, but he doesn't take that for granted. He's friends with many of the younger dancers and, when he does dance challenges with them, he's comfortable enough in his Taemin-ness that he really lets them shine. I see "Advice" as a continuation of the themes within Taemin's previous Never Gonna Dance Again album trilogy -- "2 Kids," "Criminal" and "Idea." With "Criminal" and "Idea," Taemin talks about being involved in a toxic relationship -- not necessarily a romantic relationship, but a metaphor for his relationship with fame -- in which he agrees to be manipulated almost to the point of being destroyed in order to become the artist we see today. But, in the end of "Idea," we see him become free from the box everyone wants to put him in and he comes to terms with his role as an idol. He has now formed his own "Idea" about himself and what it means to be an idol, etc.
As Taemin explained during his VLive event for "Advice" -- which came out in 2021 -- "Advice" is like the end to the first chapter in his life, and it marks the beginning of the second chapter. The song seems to be his way of saying I am done caring to everyone who judged him and all those haters who spread rumors and misinformation about him. "Advice" is showing that he is now free and confident to be himself, breaking stereotypes and now only listening to himself.
Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two performers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends. (He is considered the blueprint for what it means to be a successful as a male solo artist. He was one of the first male idols from an active group to go solo, and he did it at such a young age, starting in 2014 at 21 years old. He has been a solo artist for more than half his career.)
In "Advice" he's basically saying, "Stop trying to put me in a box, in which I'll never fit in." He is also speaking to everyone that says he's getting old, that he's just a Michael Jackson wannabe that doesn't sell a lot of albums because he tries too hard to be edgy, etc. He's rebelling against all those people who are constantly advising him to make more mainstream music, or to follow the traditional Kpop idol style, in order to boost his sales and his popularity. However, as Taemin is making clear in "Advice," that is not who he is and he will never be "normal" or "mainstream" and he is OK with that.
In the scenes where you see him covered in ink, I think that is supposed to be him showing everyone how he is no longer the "unstained," cute maknae everyone wants to think of him as. The diamond you see painted on his hand when he is playing the piano, and you see drawn on his bicep, etc. is SHINee's symbol and all the pearl aqua blue/green colors you see in the MV is SHINee's official color. (The large tattoo of a Peony flower you can see on his hip is real. Hence why in the lyrics he says, "I destroy the torso that you were chasing after." In other words, he's saying he's tired of people thinking they even have a say in what he does with his body.)
This song was specifically designed to not be like anything he has ever done before. He plays the piano, he raps, he shows off his falsetto notes, etc., which is different than what we often hear and see from him. He intentionally used this song to prove that he isn't one type of singer. People often think of Taemin as a sultry vocalist that sings in a breathy comfortable, less dynamic style. So, with this song he wants to prove to everyone that he can be unpredictable and try new things. Yet again, you can't put him in a box or tell him who to be. Everything you see in this MV is 100% Taemin, including the piano playing.
Everything that Taemin's haters like to point out about him and say are reasons why he shouldn't be held to such high esteem, I find completely ridiculous. I don't think that anyone who actually knows him would ever say he has played it safe at any time in his career. If you think he is only one dimensional, and that he is trying to be anything other than himself, then you really don't know Taemin. Everything he does is different, out there and definitely not safe. It's always uniquely Taemin, and he couldn't do it any other way.
Also, because Taemin is a member of SHINee, none of his songs are ever like anything you have ever heard or seen before from him. It will always have a new beat, style and sound. As SM Entertainment's experimental boy group, SHINee is meant to be the first and they are expected to set the trend, and that includes the members' solo work. With every new song Taemin produces it's expected to be different than the last, so you will never hear the same style or sound from him in any of his songs, even on the same album, and yet, it still will be uniquely Taemin-like. Which is another example of how you can never put him in a box or expect anything from him. :D
Another theme in "Advice" is about how Taemin is embracing his androgynous side -- but on his own terms -- which I think is a continuation of the message in his "Move" MV. Early in his career when Taemin was growing up in SHINee -- he debuted in 2008 at 14 years old -- he was known for his delicate feminine features. It took him a long time to accept that he was recognized for his looks and to come to terms with the fact that everyone thought of him as a "pretty boy," etc. So, at this point in his career -- he is now 27 years old in this MV -- he is making a statement about how he has decided to be himself and no longer care what people think. Music is art and art has no gender. So, that is why in "Advice" you see him wearing hair extensions, fishnets and women's Supreme sportswear, etc. But if you notice, his choreography is very fast paced and sharp, which is hyper masculine -- a complete contrast to the "feminine" image people want to give him. You also see him wearing makeup, but it's smeared on his face, as if to say, "people may think of me as a 'Pretty Boy,' but I don't care about looking pretty."
In the lyrics he is saying, "It's creepy how people are always looking to cause drama, so stop trying to create scandals in my life that don't really exist. It's all just stories you make up." He's tired of all those people who seem to look for reasons to cause drama, where none really exists.

Where he says "floppy" in the lyrics, I think he's talking about knowing about or hearing firsthand the things people are saying about him, but he is choosing not to pay attention to them because what they're saying is flopping or doesn't hold any weight or have any substance, etc. "Advice" just proves that every time people try to put Taemin in a box, he destroys it and keeps coming back with something more unique and never seen before.
Hence, why in the choreography he puts his hands in front of his face and creates a movement that looks like an animated mouth talking. It represents how everyone keeps talking about him and what they are saying is nonsense, which makes them look and sound ridiculous, etc. Which is why in the lyrics he says, "You will never get the keys to my lock" because he doesn't ever plan to give people what they want and allow them access to his secrets and personal life, etc. (Those people who like to gossip about him will never truly know the real him.)
I interpret the "One (piece of) Advice" he is talking about in the lyrics as a reference to the advice he keeps being given about being more mainstream, but he's saying, "stop trying to make me conform to the image you have in your head of who I should be and what I should do." In other words, take all that time and effort you have been using to come up with ways to talk about how he doesn't fit in, etc. and put it to better use. "Follow my own advice" and do something original for once.
And the crucifixion pose at the end of "Advice" is sort of a signature pose for him. I interpret it to be like he is saying, "And that is the end, this is my final word, take it or leave it, but don't doubt me. I have given it my all and laid everything I had out there for you," etc.
You should really see his "Advice" dance practice as well. It's a good way to see the full choreography without any cuts, edits or ackward camera angles.

Taemin and his SHINee bandmates are amazing singers, dancers and performers. I would suggest you to watch music videos first, then live performances and dance practices for each song. For Taemin, for his bandmates and for SHINee as a whole. They are even better live, trust me

Thank you for discovering Taemin and maybe Shinee too? They are 2nd gen K-pop artist and actively on the scene since 15 years. Taemin hit 10 years of being also a solo artist. Maybe "Guilty" would be nice as the second reaction. The genre of Taemin and Shinee is very diverse. Since they are known in the industry as "experimental" and "way paver ". They might be not the taste of music for you, but definitely worth to discover. Thanks again and have a good day 😊 Turkish Shawol from Germany

Taemin is iconic. He is a once in a generation type of artist. He should be a global superstar. I'm hoping that by partnering with Big Planet Made for his solo activities, he will be able to promote outside of Asia. You'll get a lot of recommendations from fans but the two videos that you will likely be recommended the most are Move and Guilty, but Idea, Criminal, Press Your Number, and Danger should also be on your list.

Taemin is also a metalhead. In an interview 10+ years ago, Taemin was asked about music album recommendation for fans and he suggested Korn's album. Even during Shinee's concert, Taemin had a solo performance of Korn feat Skrillex's Get Up

LOL he is called the Korean Michael Jackson. He definitely liked his music and credits MJ for inspiring him. He's also quite well known as one of the best dancers in Kpop. I strongly recommend Guilty. His vocals are amazing! You really can't go wrong with any Taemin MV. He also has fantastic Japanese songs as he's fluent in Japanese too. And his Killing Voice video is great too!

Thank you so much for this reaction. it is Tae-min on the pronunciation with a long a. Funny you said he reminds you of Michael Jackson because he has be named the Michael Jackson of K-pop. He is literally an Korean version of MJ. He is the youngest in Shinee (Shine-e) which is still an active group with some amazing songs been around a while. Super M was a group of all the top singers from other groups but is currently inactive for now and not sure they will get back together since some members left the group or are in military service. But they also have some amazing songs. Taemin has an amazing smooth as silk vocals. My top favorite of his is Sayonara Hitori (Good Bye). I just thing it is an amazing song and video. Love to see you check out more of Taemin. Criminal m/v, Idea m/v Black Rose ( performance), Famous m/v, Press Your Number m/v (is older but love the video).

just a little help with pronunciation
    Taemin= tay-men
SHINee= shine-ee or shiny. It is supposed to be like the ones who recieve the shine/light
bonus: their fandom name is Shawol (shy-wall), an abreviation of the term SHINee World, which is also the title of their first full album

@offset era, you guys are tapping into K-pop in the world unlike any other music genres that you might have listen to you will hear and corporations in the formulations of multi genres just in one song the changes in the orchestra or the changes in the instrument definitely plays a role in K-pop!😊
TAEMIN pronounced TAY- MIN , he is a veteran in the K-pop industry he comes from SM entertainment but he has now moved on to more of a solo career he still has connection with his group SHINee which is a four member group actually it was a five member group one of the members made a very difficult choice and ended his life!
His music is very diverse when it comes to philosophies and different types of aesthetics that he puts into his music video never one song is the same you will get something different from TAEMIN every time in a music video or concept!
It’s not funny that you consider him Michael Jackson of K-pop a lot of us fans consider him close resembling in the Korean version like Michael Jackson in many ways with his aesthetic in music not MJ’s personal life!
There’s a song that is the part one version from his album, “ criminal“ ,That song incorporate Stockholm syndrome where a criminal/capture victim starts relating and identifying with his captor! His concepts are very wide range when it comes to music his choreography is incredible his vocal line ability is very well displayed in a higher pitch or higher range but not as high as ParkJimin of BTS, Who happens to be a very close friend to TAEMIN. They’re both incredible dancers but preferably Jimin of BTS has more taekwondo/contemporary/ballet/hip-hop dance ability. I don’t know this but it’s definitely a check out for Park Jimin yes continue doing TAEMIN but the song that I would like you to check out by Park Jimin of BTS “Set Me Free Part 2” !💜😔👍
Thank you for having such an open mind to doing different concepts of music especially the K-pop industry where a lot of people consider it like boy band material only it’s much more than that the more you explore the more you will be surprised on the different concepts the different vocal ranges the different choreographies that incorporate what K-pop is all about!😊
