    Almost 200 miles into a journey to hike the length of the Grand Canyon, photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko find that winter has set in. The two face frigid temperatures, snow-obscured terrain, and dwindling food, but they soldier through-into the depths of the magnificent Olo Canyon.
    Part two of a three-part series following photographer Pete McBride and writer Kevin Fedarko as they attempt to hike the length of the Grand Canyon, a feat few have accomplished, and explore the challenges that are threatening the future of this iconic national park.

    I've done a few hike down below the rim for a few days and we stash water along the way down to lighten and also provide us water for the hike out.

    Beautiful photography. Great narration. I have but one suggestion.... The video clips are not in chronological order, nor are they cited as to area, for the most part. After Owls Eyes, for example, I see a clip from Tanner Beach. So that could be confusing to one unfamiliar. Great job, though, in doing this. I am sure Steck and Butchart were chuckling....

    having a graduate degree in hydrology from the University of Arizona, I am insulted by that guy saying that the travel of water below the ground is "mysterious".... no it's not... its been studied very well.. and there is science to prove that we understand where water flows underground and how fast it flows

      Wow, you must be a new graduate. Your premise would be shredded on the witness stand. I've been a mining consultant for over 40 years, working on major mine projects around the world. Mine fluids always get away to some extent, even for most "fully lined" facilities.

      One is at the mouth of Olo, so they must have had friendly rafters drop them off. The nearest car access to Olo is about a week's walk away.

    • @BrianForUtah
      @BrianForUtah 5 лет назад +1

      "Food caches may be placed before an extended hike begins, but must be removed within six (6) months after completion of the hike. Hikes for placement of caches or for resupply must meet all backcountry use regulations and policies. Resupply by a commercial (authorized concessioner) river company is allowed."
      -Grand Canyon National Park Backcountry Management Plan.

    So .... you crossed the Little Colorado River in flood (0:19) .... what time of year? Was that memorably challenging or just a soak in the river and proceed?

    • @BrianForUtah
      @BrianForUtah 5 лет назад

      Shouldn't ordinarily be a problem. There are many viable fords near the mouth even at high water, as long as it isn't a mud or rock flow as in flash floods. The LCR goes from blue to brown whenever the main flow runs from above the carbonate springs.
      And it seems like January so it probably isn't a flash flood with rain so rare then on the plateau above, just icy cold meltwater.

      @@BrianForUtah Thanks Brian .... we forded with success (brown but not high) .... we just did it prematurely near the main fish camp and had to bushwhack through thorns for a few hundred yards until we located the trail. Thanks again! Excellent series you both shared. Mad respect as hiking on the trails is hard enough but canyoneering must have been a true test of spirit.

    Sure wish the Uintah and Ourey here in Utah had the same conservation feelings that the Havasupai have. Here in Utah, these tribes have covered their lands in oil wells. Just look it up on google earth southwest of Duchesne Utah. Thousands of wells. And yet where does the money go? Passing through Reservation lands on I40, it sure doesnt look like the money has been given to the people of the reservation. Now do a story on THAT.
