  • Here’s a fantastic recording of Morning Mayor Harry Harrison on a cool Summer day in the Big Apple. This opens in the middle of the 6am news with Deborah Wexel and slides right into Harrison’s warmth. This is really a warm and wonderful show. Fans who remember Harry Harrison know so well how he made you feel like part of the family. We actually get two newscasts in this short aircheck. Lots of commercials from 1992 - was it REALLY that long ago? Weather from one of New York City’s most well-known meteorologists, Mr. G… and boy is it a cool Summer, with highs only in the 60s this particular day. Musically, CBS-FM is still doing the original Oldies format. Lots of hits from the 1950s and 60s with a bit of 70s in there. We had to scope all of it out, but you’ll catch the beginnings and endings of lots of Do-Wop stuff, standard 60s fare and even a Chicago tune everyone remembers from 1970! Its the format everybody loved and remembered!
This is part 1 of a two-part aircheck. One I think will become one of your favorites on the site!
    TECHNICAL
There’s virtually no white noise from the tape on this, and overall, it’s mostly clean and crisp audio. There is one issue that I really couldn’t fix without turning this into a monaural recording. Toward the end of this segment, there are two spots where the left channel drops out. Old tape issue where the thin ribbon of tape actually warps slightly and the play heads momentarily lose contact with the tape. Or, oxide drop off due to age. It happens, much more frequently with cassettes than reel-to-reel tapes.

Thank you Ellis! I listened to him just about every day on my way to work until his last day. Like people have said below, he made us listeners feel like part of the family.

I'm so glad that Harry Harrison and Ron Lundy worked back to back here., just like they did at WABC AM together. This will never be forgotten.

HH kindness and professionalism shined thru the airwaves. Grew up listening to him and followed him on all the station changes.

RIP Harry M. Harrison, Jr. (9/20/1930-1/28/2020)
Harry was the "Morning Mayor" of New York City radio, namely the then-"Good Guys" AM station WMCA 57 (1959-68), the benevolent then-Musicradio 77 WABC (1968-late 1979) and his final 23-year gig at (W)CBS-FM 101.1, which he assumed Jack Miller's (unless I'm mistaken) position on March 24, 1980 to March 19, 2003, though Harry would return for a Saturday morning run in 2004 until the "untimely end" of CBS-FM's original run as an Oldies station (I won't even say that new station name).

This is about when I moved to Manhattan. I may have been listening this day. I discovered his big voice and personality and I think of him fondly every once in a while.

Why did CBS FM 101.1 Oldies radio 📻 station stop playing oldies?

They wanted to attract younger listeners-That's why they did away with the 50's & 60's music.
