It most certainly is a festival, a Goth music festival. The gathering as you call it have nothing to do with the festival but instead are a huge crowd of narcissistic cosplays who are completely ignorant of what the festival is or even what a Goth is
Spot the Goths.... It's all about posing for the photographers now. Cos players, try living every day as alternative and you'll understand why true alternatives get annoyed. It's Whitby Cos play weekend now, let's be honest people
I'd no idea that there was a festival or gathering like this, Ollie. Good to see people getting dressed up and enjoying themselves. Well filmed in the busy streets, full marks. Cheers for doing this video.
I enjoy Halloween in Whitby every year, been attending the Goth Music Festival about 26 years and for a few years the Film Festival too. The town by day now is very much an inclusive celebration of Halloween in general, I am thoroughly aware some of the old guard hate it now and that's as may be, Whitby town itself fills me with joy, I had a great time beach combing on Tate Hill Sands as it was too calm to fly my kite. Catching up with local friends and shopping in favorite shops as well as the gorgeous Goth markets is fun and seeing kids wearing the best outfits they will wear all year entirely unafraid of even the fiercest Goth makes my day and besides that, you all missed out on Killing Miranda, playing at The Cove, who absolutely stormed it, what a gig and Zeitgeist Zero were darn good too !
I believe what happened was the organises who were originally married had a disagreement and split up and the rights to the pavilion and the Whitby spa were under discussion and the festival which became tomorrow’s ghosts gained the right for the pavilion spa because it was deemed unsafe for bands to perform when it came to WGW. Tomorrow’s ghosts as far as I’m concerned is the actual Gothic music festival and Whitby Goth weekend has just become a self glorified fancy dress party .
Something a little different, enjoyed it! One of my favourite pubs to drink in Manchester is The Salisbury. Get them all in there. Metal heads, punks, rockers, goths. Smashing crowd 👌🏻
Here's the thing - goths have, and attend, music festivals all over the world - check out the likes of WGT, Amphi, Mera Luna, Castle Party etc. This one is sadly unique in that the bulk of attendees now are absolutely nothing to do with the wider movement and merely repeatedly attend this one festival, stick on a cheap cosplay outfit, and culturally appropriate something they neither understand or have anything to do with outwith said Yorkshire seaside town. Many could see the writing on the wall years ago when the inherently racist Steampunk movement started showing up (with the organiser of said event looking to cash in after they'd been chased out of their previous town). To paraphrase Sexbat, who none of these attendees will ever have heard of, "We Didn't Fight The Punk Wars So A Bunch Of Brexit Voting Pensioners Could Have A Day Out" :)
Very enjoyable watch, looks like a fun way to spend a weekend. I really didn't "Fight the mainstream" but learned about it and then used it to my advantage without becoming part of it. Thanks to Ollie for another great watch about people that help make the world a little bit more enjoyable.
When I went to WGW in 2013 it was still technically a music festival I saw Diary of Dreams headlining on a Saturday and it was great these days. It doesn’t seem to have anything to do with a subculture and it’s just a self glorified fancy dress party.
I was there seeing the bands in the evening and at the Brewery. The people you show in this were down right rude or condescending in looks to us as it was clear we were there as true Goths for the love of the music. This just from walking from our campsite to the Pavilion. Very sad affairs
5:39 As I'm in my 50s, I'm what some would call an "Elder Goth." I definitely listen to Goth music, primarily, and tend to wear dark clothes. I am more of a DIY dresser, but if people wish to wear "costumes" to such events, good for them. I have mede special outfits for events, which is fun. I'm a painter, so can wear what I want, within reason! I currently live in the States, and a man wearing his favourite football player's jersey looked me up and down, and asked if I was going to a costume party. The irony that he was wearing one was completely lost on him.
Well, its probably just going to become an Insta event with people just there to gather content for their social media page. It happens to almost everything these days, but the originals will just move on and organize their actual social gathering somewhere else and thus the cylce continues.
Thanks for such an unbiased insight into the goth gathering. It is great to see an event where it doesn't cost a fortune to attend and hasn't been taken over by big business.
Costs a fortune to stop there these days now the cosplayers and steampunks are taking up all the rooms. The goth gathering happens in the pubs then onto the live music in the evenings.
Nice film Ollie - thanks - I had heard about the Goth events in Whitby but had never seen any films on it - perhaps you should dress up a bit next time ?
Yes, wgt is the biggest in Europe I believe. The goths in Whitby are actually hiding to avoid the ones only deessed up in coatumes that have nothing to do with the goth subculture.
I'm in my 50s, and have been goth for over forty years. I love Nick Cave. IMNSHO, being a goth doesn't stop you from listening to what you like, but some people seem to love imposing rules.
Whitby None goth weekend should be rebranded all about turning up for a couple of hours down church street have as many photoshoots as possible with the many togs and jobs a good one.
Sadly fancy dress up people who have no idea what goth actually is have taken over which is what you primarily show here.actual goths do attend too and the goths do attend the music events which were sold out and are already sold out next year. But the costumes have become very cringe. Appropriating culture.
@@williamfenn7875 - will irony do? When this event started back in '94 one of the great things about it was that it was a way for the alternative community to safely get together - given that many were openly persecuted / harassed / assaulted by the mainstream up to and including kids being kicked to death for how they looked. They were not 'wearing a costume' - it was who they actually were. Hence the mainstream showing up en masse, dressing themselves in tat and pretending to be a 'goth' for a couple of days a year will never sit well. The vast majority of actual punters have moved to other events either to avoid the cuckoos or simply because said impersonators have increased demand / cost for accommodation in said town to ridiculous and unsustainable levels. Hilarious eh?
An original gothic music festival ruined by cosplayers, plastic fancy dress wearers and boomer steampunks who have no interest in the music and just want to fill up the town posing for creepy dodgy street photograpers. All the goths, like me, avoid the streets and stick to the gigs.
@@airwaves9611 - do feel free to explain to everyone what it actually is. if you think, after 45 years of musical history, it's cosplay, fancy dress and steampunk then you need to be 'gatekeeped'.

That's a bit harsh but you're right to a degree. I go quite often and wear my special outfit I made myself, so yes it's a costume and I would never wear it every day but I'm definitely 'alt' though you might not always think so by my appearance. What I noticed this November though was the huge rise in 'Goth watchers' who were clearly there to see the spectacle rather than to participate. It was pretty alarming tbh, as it made it really awful wandering around and trying to get into a cafe or restaurant. It was that aspect that made it feel fake for me 😞

Unfortunately, if you put on a gathering of actual alternative people in the UK these days, it gets stamped down on pretty quickly by authorities.
