  • The Instruo Arbhar has been a top 5 personal favorite module since I got it two years ago. I read the manual back then, went through all the features, developed a handy workflow and forgot most of the features again. Well, you can't use the things you don't know, so I've been limiting Arbhar's creative potential in my patches for way too long. This video started with the idea of just watching Jason Lim's 01:47:00 video and make notes about things I forgot, didn't know or brought me to new ideas. I must say I completely rediscovered the module as a polyphonic synthesizer. If you have an Arbhar in your rack, you may be in for a treat :).

    Great video, I love my Arbhar a lot! A couple additional “advanced” ideas that I use a lot: the grains triggered by the intensity knob also generate a gate/trigger out, when using the ccw settings, you can create a “clock” to drive other rhythmic parts, and all grains will fire on a “beat”.
    The manually triggered grains are louder than the ones from the intensity settings, and so can be used as accents or alternate rhythms.

      You're so right and thanks for the patch idea! I made a note. I had a script and I wanted to tell something about the gate out and the 'arm +' . But some advanced features are still 'knowledge' with no matching experience to show how it can be used in music. I bet there will be more Arbhar videos!

    • @CinematicLaboratory

      That would be Morphagene as your tape splicing machine and Arbhar as your granular workstation. I prefer Morphagene over Lubadh because you can also splice and reorganize beats, create stalling effects (e.g. vocals), etc. And Arbhar, what can I say, it's a masterpiece.

    Good examples and hints, is the reverb only generated by the Arbhar ? I m still struggling making a right capture and being able to play something audible back, s t I hear the recording initially and after twisting knobs it all seams to be gone, no more reproducible, really don’t know why I can not reproduce sounds like other do, I had the same issue with clouds, maybe I fail to granulate … 😂

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Год назад

      Wow, that's weird. Try to make sure your little 'dub' knob is centered so you can record over earlier recordings instead of erasing them. Also make sure the dry/wet is in the center. Experiment with the built in mic so you can be sure Arbhar works as expected. Also, as described in the video, if nothing happens, press the 'gate' button and hold it so a grain can play. If this works, you'll need to dial up intensity to make it play by itself. If this all doesn't work, contact Instruo support....

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Год назад

      And yes, Arbhar has an amazing reverb, but you need to use the expander with bipolar CV e.g. a Maths channel 2 or 3, Instruo 1F, Molten MTR, etc.

    I am mixed about getting Arbhar and for one reason only, you can not load sounds from the drive at the back of the module or am I wrong on that. Instruo mentions this drive briefly in there overview but does not elaborate much. Perhaps you can comment on this and convince me to get this module?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад +1

      You can load sounds into the module, and save recorded buffers to the USB drive. The only 'backside' is the fact that you need to get the module out to get to the USB. But trust me, it works!

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад +1

      @@randallsmith9170 Yes, a buffer can contain only 10 (or 12) seconds of mono sound. You need to make a folder with a specific name (see manual) and press a special combo to load them. I believe Arbhar automatically converts your file to mono when it's stereo.

    This is really brilliant. From #5 onward, you convinced me to go back and explore my Arbhar in more depth. Instruo packs so much functionality into these modules that it can take a long time to fully discover them. I also found some core settings and kind of left it at that, thinking these other functions (like follow) were just too much to consider, and I totally forgot about the secondary engine trigger. There's so much left to explore. Thank you!

    Cine .. I've seen this module demonstrated, a few times .. either the star attraction (or in support of something else). You make a pretty convincing case, here. A bit like MI Beads, with more refinements, eh? Though .. even having owned Beads, for months .. I could be in for some "aha!" moments, also. Granular synth editing was the original reason why I got involved in Eurorack gear. Thanks, man.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  2 года назад

      Thanks for sharing, Ken! I have Beads, and I love it, but it's just not as controllable as Arbhar and having six buffers you can select/record/play opens up so much possibilities for timbres, progressions, chords, percussion, etc. The only 'con' I have with Arbhar is the mono input but that can be fixed with a send/return or mult/mixer.

    • @kenswanson1093
      @kenswanson1093 2 года назад

      @@CinematicLaboratory wow .. 6 buffers .. :) .. perhaps someday, I'll "outgrow" Beads? .. and there will be a version 2.0 Arbhar, by then .. that has stereo in? In a way .. I have been imagining a scenario, such as this, myself. Only, .. employing Bitbox Micro, along with Beads, .. being fueled by MI Marbles, clocking into Bitbox, from Marbles, probably. I know there are some capabilities with Bitbox .. but, have yet to actually experience it's true outputs. I've observed video where somebody is recording, new loops into Bitbox, as it's running & playing, in real time .. and then another & another .. letting these loops stack up and coming in to play along, on the next clock beat .. all the while, with everything staying in time, as this progresses. Aaaaah, .. how incredible!
      Funny, that you should mention a mult/mixer. In the "I just realized I need this!" vein .. I just purchased one of those recently, to combine outs, from Marbles. Works pretty well ..

      Try to record just one note with a bit of low pass filter applied to it so it doesn't dominate too much. Then use 1V/OCT CV to play the notes and trigger them. You can record different timbres (same note) in different buffers and use the expander to change buffers (the 'amazing' part).

    This was fantastic! I love the pan control. I don't have an Arbhar yet, but it looks like would be fun to feed it things like a sample and hold connected to a 16x clock multiplier (or even to feed it pink noise) to really scatter the grains across the stereo field.
    And I've been looking at other granular synths lately as well, so it's super interesting to see the 1V/Oct mode put into use. It's really cool that it does both.

      It's the sensel morph with the Innovator overlay. I made a 'haken continuum' overlay to play the EaganMatrix. It's a shame the sensel morph is discontinued because they can't get the needed parts anymore. I saw one on Reverb for 1K dollars so it became a relic. When I found out it was discontinued I hunted the web for this Innovator overlay and only found one. I am so happy with it, because I can now create any control surface for any system. I have a chromatic- and a minor setting for it, which explains why I can 'play' it like I've studied music for ten years. But it makes me sad I can't really share any tips, hints and workflows. I may have to keep it in a vault next to my QMMG. This world sucks. If you happen to find a Sensel Morph with a reasonable pricetag, get it! The Buchla Thunder overlay is still available everywhere. Video with the EaganMatrix may come soon, but it also feels like showing off stuff people can't buy. And that doesn't feel right.
