I lived in China for nearly 10 years and over there, they have a surprising comfort food. A dish called tomato and egg. Basically you take eggs and tomatoes, one or two eggs per tomato. Some garlic and green onions. Dice or slice the garlic and the whites of the green onions and chop the green parts into finger width pieces. Brown the garlic and onions a bit. Take the eggs and whisk them deliberately getting air in the mix (bad form usually I know). Put oil in a pan fairly deep, sesame oil is best if you have it. Get the oil hot and drop the eggs in. Cook intil *almost* done, they should still be a little runny. Then add the garlic, onions and tomatoes cut into wedges.
Add chicken stock and a little soy sauce and let it simmer, gently stirring occasionally on a medium heat. The juices from the tomatoes will come out after a while, that means its almost done. Let it simmer in those juices for a few minutes and salt to taste. Some people add sugar. I usually don't, but it can be good. Many people also blanch the tomatoes and remove the skin, but I leave them on. I feel like they add texture.
Serve that over white rice. Personally I prefer the dish *cold.* Still over hot white rice mind, but I like to put the tomato and egg in the fridge overnight then serve it over hot white rice. That is NOT traditional, but it is REALLY tasty.
Expert cooking tip. Adding a tiny bit of sugar and a vinegar to a dish, not even enough to taste can dramatically add to the taste of a dish. The reason is, that both sugar and vinegar have a chemical reaction that causes taste buds to become more sensitive for a while. A tea spoon of each is more than enough for an entire dish or soup. Again, it doesn't even have to be enough to taste.

These sorts of lists always go with cheese curds for Wisconsin, but I feel like Butterburgers gets short shrift in that deal. Butterburgers are so good that Wisconsin’s homebred franchise, Culvers, is one of the fastest growing recently nee fast food chains, with restaurants in about half the states and growing (though, yes, also has cheese curds).
Butterburgers are exactly what they sound like… they’re fried in butter. The toppings are fairly traditional… but people also use,of course, cheese curds. Focusing just on the burger, you can’t beat the buttery flavor of a Wisconsin butterburger. Butter really sets off those umami taste buds !

Arkansas in da house! On a cold, dreary, winter's day nothing beats a steaming bowl of chicken and dumplings! There are two dumpling options: dropped and rolled. For dropped, you drop spoonfuls of dough into the boiling broth. This is the method shown in the video clip.
For rolled, you roll the dough out with a rolling pin, then cut it into squares with a pizza cutter. That's my preferred method. I use chicken broth instead of water for a richer flavor, throw in a stick of butter for flavor and a silky mouth feel, skin, debone, and shred a Walmart rotisserie chicken, season with salt, sage, and a few good shakes of pepper, and enjoy! 😋😋😋

I would say the only eatery in Savannah that has earned the fame it has received is Leopold’s, although they’re just ice cream. My personal favorite place to get a “main dish” in Savannah whenever I’m down there is Vinnie Van Go-Gos. I’ll even go out of my way if I’m passing near Savannah just to stop at Vinnie Van Go-Gos

The best Mexican food you’ll find is either in California or Arizona. Make sure you don’t do fast food but a sit down restaurant. Each area will have a favorite restaurant so ask a local where their favorite Mexican restaurant is. That probably goes for everywhere you’ll go. If you head to the Grand Canyon make sure to stop at Williams, Arizona. Best streak is at a restaurant that is known for its cow logo. Again ask a local.

The locals are joking when they "bad mouth" the ingredients. My wife's family used to often make their own scrapple on their farm. It is a mixture of fine-ground pork and beef with buckwheat flour and/or corn meal with black pepper blended into a paste and formed into a bread loaf shape. People who don't like it might just have not ever had it prepared properly. You slice it into thin slices about 9 to 10 mm thick and fry it long and slow in a high smoke-point oil so that it gets firm all the wat through and crispy on the outside. Serve it drowned in natural maple syrup.

Another fav in NC is collard greens. Usually, served in the fall. Its usually cooked in a big pot and boiled for several hours. My mother was from Iowa and sweet corn is a definite. For holidays, I make a family recipe called Scalloped Corn, the recipe I have has been handed down through the family. It's not the recipe that is online. Every summer we would go to Iowa and load up with 6-8 gallons of popcorn to bring back to PA. Best sweet corn ever in Iowa. 22:40. Atlanta hit the nail on the head, LITERALLY She did. A lot of our American recipes were created by accident , and we Americans instead of dumping them into the bin, tried to improve. We are still a young nation less than 300 years old, Yet our spirit of pioneering and making as Bob Ross would say " Happy little accidents" into Great Results is what separates Ourselves. We are a Nation whom is not afraid to make accidents into wonderful creations. We are the Nation that the Schools would kick out whilst learning, and come back in less than 300 years as a Mere Republic with Imperial Strength, Earth wise, and Space Interstellar Technology. We may be the one nation on Earth that has never believed in a half cup/glass empty. If we Fail, then at Least we Tried. If we Succeed, then better for Ourselves. Half Cup Full Mentality is what has made us soo successful in such a SHORT time.

This video definitely has a few things wrong. Mississippi is a tall-shaped state so I'm sure there are multiple comfort foods depending on the region. I'm on the gulf coast and it doesn't even snow here, unlike the mid and northern part of the state.
I personally enjoy any seafood, especially shrimp or crawfish (low country boil). Chicken and dumplings and fried green tomatoes are also a hit. And a real comfort meal would be some type of meat such as fried chicken, fried pork chop, roast, prime rib or a grilled steak or ribs with sides such as baked or mashed potatoes, some type of greens (turnip, mustard or collard) with cornbread, some type of peas or beans (field, crowder, or butterbeans), creamed fried skillet corn cut fresh off the stalk, and fresh sliced tomatoes. You know... things that come from a garden. Being the poorest state, we are definitely large on gardening and fresh, homegrown foods. Comfort food would be what Grandma used to make for Sunday supper when we'd all go visit her. Being next-door to Louisiana, I also grew up enjoying gumbo.
The northern part of the state probably enjoys barbecue more because of the influence of Memphis, TN. But we also love our barbecue down here.
One thing that's NOT huge here is poboys. You can occasionally find them on a menu but it's not a "go-to" for anyone in these parts. As a matter of fact and contrary to the video, it's not even native to Mississippi. It was created in New Orleans, LA.

Good food everywhere! I've lived in Minnesota for 30 years and have yet to see a Juicy Lucy on any menu. My favorite soup is New England Clam Chowder which is very hard to find in the Midwest.
Hotdish should be the Minnesota state food! But which one? ❤

@@anneo3754 Yes I have. The cheese is somehow INFUSED in the middle of the burger!!! I think it is injected during the stages of medium rare and medium then fried until either done or well done.
The place I tried it USED to have it on their menu but you could possibly special order it from OFF the menu.
ALL restaurants have a "hidden menu" so if you ask around at places that make hamburgers (usually sports bars) you MIGHT get lucky!!!

Louisiana born and raised myself. I love a good jambalaya, and a spicy gumbo when we get the first chill in the air. If I had to choose a state comfort food though, it'd be crispy deep-fried boudin balls. Eat them plain, or dip them in ranch or remoulade. Preferably from a truck stop off I-10. They usually have the best ones.

Bison meat is extremely lean and the meat has a sweeter taste than beef. It is so yummy.. Because it's so lean and not a lot of fat. It has to be cooked at a lower temperature and not burn the meat. All you need is salt and pepper.
Oklahoma has a good size population of Native Americans.. In the summer they do fund raisers for the church and sell Navajo tacos..
lol.. I made Navajo tacos when my son brought his girlfriend for the first time. Everyone was standing in line to assemble their taco. Lol.. Everyone watched in horror as she made her Navajo taco.. first topping taco meat.. she skips the pinto beans with the juice, everyone is looking around at each other.. the bread absorbs the bean juice.. making the fry bread more tender and fluffy without being soggy. She then added lettuce.. tomato .. onion.. cheese.. leaves off the guacamole, jalapeños sour cream and picanta sauce.. goes to the fridge grabs the 1000 Island dressing and tops off her Navajo taco with 1000 Island salad dressing. Everyone is freaking out.. looking at each other in horror and just smiling at her.. It's a taco with fry bread instead of flour or corn tortillas. Who in the world would go to a Mexican restaurant and put 1000 island on a hard shell or soft shell tacos.. That's a slap to the face. An out right insult.
Navajo tacos and fry bread dessert is awesome.
Fry bread can also be eaten as a dessert.. you can sprinkle it with powder surgar.. or my favorite.. topped with honey.. yummy.. I do the same with leftover flour tortillas. Fry them in a little oil.. I love it when air pockets develope. When golden brown remove them from the oil. drop in a paper bag with a mixture of cinnamon and sugar. You have a crispy sweet dessert. Then it's the simplified version.. Fry until golden brown, remove the fried flour tortilla.. let it drain on a paper towel. Tear a small hole in one of the air pockets and squeeze in a small amount of honey.. It's still messy to eat.. but it's a little less messy to eat.
Sadly my favorite bbq restaurant burned down I doubt they will rebuild. They served the best chicken fried steak. The full order the steak is massive. It tok two people to finish this steak.. O order the large.. for dinner and have it for lunch the next day. Half order was an average size chicken fried steak, smothered in gravy.. just the right amount of salt. Some places the gravy has too much salt in the gravy.
Chicken fried steak.. smothered in gravy.. mashed potatoes topped with gravy.. green beans cooked in a little bacon grease. Deep fried okra is good.. Okra pan fried (not deep fried) bread with egg and jiffy corn muffin mix, your favorite seasonings fried in bacon grease, is so good.. it gives the okra added flavor.
If your gravy isn't made wjth bacon grease/fat.. lol.. then your gravy isn't country/southern.. I came across a tiktok video a man showing women how to dispose of that evil bacon fst after cooking bacon.. 😅lol
Southern moms were having a fit over Northern people toss out bacon grease. Only southern people get this. I have 2 grease tins. One for bacon grease and one for cooking oil.. there is a sivethat allows the grease or oil to pass through the small holes, catching crumb bits in the top.. cleaning the oil and grease.. Another southern dish that started in the south. And you will not believe it exists.. Chocolate gravy.. My mom made this often.. It's a gravy.. with cocoa powder and sugar. Its amost like a chocolate pudding.. you pour it over buttermilk biscuits. The savory of the biscuits tones down some of the sweetness of the chocolate geavy. Kinda like the way the peanut butter compliments or tones down the chocolate in Reese peanut butter cups. Chocolate gravy was a staple in our home growing up. I have never seen chocolate gravy on any menu in any restaurant.. You can not buy this in a restaurant. At least not the ones I have dined at. Lol.. Yankees had the nerve to clam chocolate gravy their own

I grew up on the western side of PA, and I would say Pierogies or in northwest PA Pepperoni Balls would be the comfort food. I never heard of scrapple until I was like 10 when we went to the Lancaster area.

If you like a hot dog, you'll likely enjoy scrapple. It's pretty much the same but different. It's processed pork products like a dog, but instead of a sausage, it's made into a loaf. It's really good. It's mostly sold at diners in the mid-atlantic area (Pennsy, Delaware, New Jersey) and since diners serve breakfast, lunch & dinner pretty much around the clock, you can get it whenever you like. I prefer it with syrup in the morning and with ketchup if i have it later in the day. And if you or any travelling commenters go to that area, don't go to Denny's for it. Go to a local diner - they're everywhere and they provide a more homestyle flavor.

Yeah the Oregon one is way wrong, born and raised here and outside the coast where there is crabbing all most no restaurants in the whole state even have fresh sea food, our coast is almost all little towns of a few thousand people so sea food is rare in our state to find at restaurants, the closest thing we have to state thing is ranch dressing, we put it on everything esp dipping pizza in it.

My who family would ask her to slightly burn okra when frying it, and now I even like it steamed. My comfort food is fried potatoes then on the plate put cheese on it and then a eggs over easy on top of that. I first tried it at restaurant after church called Po Folks.

While I do love me some sweet corn... I'm not gonna lie that's one of my favorite things... however as a comfort food... it's easy... Macaroni and cream of mushroom soup... with a bit of butter. Just plain ole macaroni noodles with a can of Campbell's (this is a must no scrimping on cheap stuff!)... cream of mushroom soup on it... and some butter a little bit of milk... and fresh ground pepper. Was something my Mom used to make us when I was a kid.

You should try Scrapple at least once! It's just like a sausage or maybe even a bit like haggis from descriptions I've heard of that. It's just made from the tiny bits of meat that can't be used in other ways (like tiny scrap meat from the cheeks etc), grain and spices. It should be fried so it's crisp on the outside and smooth and on the inside.
ETA: I agree with a previous poster about my favorite comfort food as mine is also a tomato sandwich, to answer your question.
