You need to mix in talking with more Babooshkas, so you are not in the creepy young girl zone. Perhaps wear some sunnys, instead of 1950s glasses. Give your hair a no 1 buzz, die the beard black or dark brown and wear some jeans and t shirts, perhaps work out a little, and get some Wodka in ya. Then you can be Bald type 2.👍

I don't film alcoholics in each video either. I have 336 videos on this channel and I speak to all types of people. I have a second channel for road trips that I just started. I only do these videos with girls because it's what people search for. I'm not like bald however, a sex tourist.

In fact, everyone learned English at school and somehow they speak it. They just are not sure of their English, they are ashamed of their bad English. Well, it's easier to say "No" if you just don't want to communicate with a stranger, especially a foreigner. You know, we have seen little good from the Anglo-Saxons, so the attitude is wary of such people. It doesn't concern you, Sam. We know that you are our man).
Russian people are quite closed. But when you get to know them better, they are very soulful and sincere. We are used to the fact that we are constantly sold on some kind of crap, sellers of all sorts of unnecessary rubbish, politicians, propagandists. It is easier for us to answer a foreigner's question about the knowledge of the language "No" to end the conversation. Not because people don't really know the language. But on the other hand, yes, knowledge of English after school leaves much to be desired). You see, if you don't really need a language, you won't learn it. How many good films, songs, literature can be given by modern English-speaking culture? Do we want to emigrate there? Are we welcome there? No, that's why the language is not needed.
I was an English teacher in Russia for 4 years, and I was very impressed with my students. They lacked self-confidence which I totally understand. I studied Russian and felt the same way because certain letters are very difficult to pronounce in Russian....The Russian R is impossible for me. :(
Anglo Saxons don't really exist as such in britain the Saxons were Germans invited in as mercenaries that then went to war with the kings that brought them in. Then you had the vikings take the entire east of England. Finally you had the French vikings conquer britain entirely. Anglo Saxon is a bit of a misnomer. At any rate it's the british government that's the problem, they are waging war on Russia and the british people.
In larger cities it is very easy to live a normal life, run a business and do everything locals do. I live in St Petersburg and many Europeans and Americans live here without Russian, and I speak so poorly that everyone suggests switching to English. Moscow is the same or even more so. I have 3 businesses I started, two are small and one is fairly large before covid but it is incoming tourism, so that has been inactive since Covid started, with 68 employees. I know several people, attractive women, who have moved here, one is a talented jazz singer and the other is an actor in stage, TV and cinema. I have a very active social and cultural life far more expansive than back home in California. The museums, clubs, opera, ballet, jazz clubs, rock clubs, 500 English style pubs, 600 beautiful parks etc. The cost of living is about 1/10th.
I think that it’s ok to move almost anyway. Look at Dan from Wild Siberia channel as an example. He didn’t speak a word when he arrived and he lives in a Siberian village!

Россиян нельзя спрашивать "говорите ли вы на английском". Мы воспринимаем эту фразу буквально и всегда отвечаем "no", даже если знаем английский язык. Скорее это связано со стеснением и страхом, что, ответив "yes", мы не сможем понять некоторые слова, за что потом будет стыдно. Если хотите поговорить с россиянами на английском языке, то лучше спросите "I'm sorry, can't you help me?". Тогда россияне будут пытаться вам помочь даже с плохим знанием английского языка. Спрашивать "говорим ли мы на английском языке" самая большая ошибка иностранцев)))
сам ты стесняешься , просто люди не хотят тратить свое время на всяких , и стоять пять минут с кем то ....... это везде так, да же если ты на языке страны обратишься ---просто скажут -нет, или не знаю (хотя многие все прекрасно знают)

Actually it’s quite rude and uncool to film a random stranger. They probably know at least some English, but are caught unprepared by the question and can’t switch their brains to English mode in a couple of seconds. They may not have used any English for a long time. The question, “Do you speak English ?” is a bad one, because it’s yes or no. Many good but not perfect speakers of English have a propensity to answer “No” to save perceived embarrassment. Better approach would be to say in tourist phrase book Russian, “Izvaneetye pozhalusta,” Do you know where I can get my hair cut? (In English). Do not ask “Do you speak English?” This gives them a few more seconds to plug their English language brain in. They will also feel that they are helping you. But I don’t know how to do with the camera. People worldwide wide are suspicious of and sick of surveillance.

This video shows the great difficulty to speak a foreign language, and this problem is not only among Russian people, as we have the same problem in Italy and even if most young people studied it at school, it seems that they are a little bit scared because they are afraid of making mistakes....and in this case you are the interviwer and above all you are English!!! Normally people don't like to be addressed in the street by strangers. Very often people ask some fake question just to catch your attention and stop you, just the way the gypsy women do. We don't like it.

Sam, you are fantastic to had learnt Russian. For us Scandinavians English is almost like a another Scandinavian dialect because of the Anglo Saxon and the Norse. Almost every third word is almost the same because we once spoke the same language and is the same people in the origin. So we have a great advantage whidout any big effort to learn English. But to learn a slavic language is not easy. You have done a really achievement Sam 🏴🏅

Hello Sam, I think that one can live in Russia without knowing the Russian language, but you will never really "arrive" in this country if you don't speak the local language. You should also familiarize yourself with the respective culture and the know the customs of a country, since this also has something to do with that respect for the country and its people. I myself, as a German, emigrated from Germany to Turkey more than fourteen years ago with my wife, who is of Turkish origin. You can get along more or less with the English language or the German language, but in my experience, real access to people and real friendships are very rare, despite modern technology (translators), if you doesn't speak the same language. However, this is not only valid in Russia or Turkey, its worldwide. It is not for nothing that many "parallel societies" have formed in various countries for this reason, where people practically remain "among themselves"... Thanks for the video🙂

Yes! You can get by here at first, but I don't like that some foreigners suggest here that you can live for years and not be bothered with learning language of the country. Make effort, be respectful to culture and people around you, learn to speak to them in language that speaks to their heart, not just passes your message

What a great video Sam! This is something I was thinking about this week! I know how to hold a very basic conversation, but I was worried about making friends when I’m there because I don’t know the language that well! Travelling there solo is intimidating but I am excited for the experience! Thank you for the video!! Also, I think the camera was effecting how people were acting, it looked as if a couple of those women could speak it but were just afraid of western media questions!

So, advise to foreigners, don't ask Russians on streets if they speak English. Most of the time you will hear "no" to that. Because we have different understanding of "knowing" language. To us it's almost like you ask us if we are "fluent in English" and rarely someone is. So people will say NO. Also many people are camera shy. They don't want to be on the spot trying their English skills that they are not confident about. They feel like on exam or something. Just skip this question and ask what you actually mean to ask in your language. Bypassers usually try to be very helpful when asked for help, directions and thinds like that unless they really hurry. You just ask the wrong question.

Write a not which says "иди нафиг" (mild form of "get lost") and show it to people like someone gave it to you and it must have the direction but you dont understand whats written there on that note xD that will provoke funny reactions and they will be more eager to help you )
I was once stopped by some Russian in Prague and he was also asking where can he buy some sausages, very weird question to a random person at street. I didn't know if he really wants something to eat or he is looking for some gay club or something. Don't ask where you can buy sausages, it's weird. 🤣

Great video. I’ve spent time in Southern Russia in one month blocks and can’t speak a word of Russian. I did have Russian friends and girlfriend help me a lot, but when I was alone I got by using translation apps. Sometimes I only used the help of strangers and it would usually take me approaching 5-10 Russians before one would speak enough English to help me out.
Sam! It is very difficult for Hungarians to speak English. Hungarian sounds are mostly vowels, very few people in Hungary can speak English clearly without an accent.
С сыном в Питере были во время чемпионата, охранник на автовокзале попросил спуститься на первый этаж. Соответственно иностранцы, находящиеся там, не поняли и спросили у нас, что случилось. Пока я вспоминала, как слова в предложение связать (25 лет отсутствие практики), сын уже объяснил. Молодежь хорошо знает английский, по сетке общаются во время игры часто. А в Москве многих и на русском спрашивать бесполезно, не помогут, не из-за вредности, а просто сами приезжие, могут и не знать.

@@nonames6790 as a russian i v been "arrested" (spent some time at police station) in US once for telling a girl streamer has better chances to gain her first audience. Such a mess started. They ended up closing the gym door for police to arrive. In a matter of seconds i felt myself in the middle of a madhouse. And the second time one guy was trying to convince me of something and then added that he is gay as if it should change my mind and i dared to answer "my condolences"! Dude! )) Dont try this xD
English word hairdresser is a funny word though. Like people have to know what the entire word means because it's not obvious when you deconstruct it. Hair, dresser? Dress your hair? You mean a hat? A winter hat? summer hat?
I am from Czech republic, another slavic country same as Russia and we learnt Russian since primary school until 1989, I used to visited couple of times Russia as teenager, however I never had any issue to understand Russians and on contrary, even some Czech words are same as Russian one. After 1989, so called velvet revolution we started to learn German and English instead of Russian, even after 20 years I am still able to write and speak Russian and I guess I can live in Russia at any time without any language barrier, however I live in the country down under and I guess that I will stay here as Europe is doing economical suicide right now!

Far more people speak English than any other language, at least 800,000,000 Chinese, 900,000,000 Indians, 360,000,000 in North America, 200,000,000 EU, plus even British.
English is international communication language, but if you prefer to live mostly time in some county, you must learn local languages to just for your personal easy live there.

Hi, Sam)) Actually Russian people mostly are shy to speak English because they dont know it well or just know some basics from the school. We often want to help people but without knowing good English we are scared that we wont help but will confuse foreign person so he will be even more lost. So for some people are easier to say NO, I dont speak english to not to be ashamed and not confuse the tourist. I was the same many years ago😄...My English was at the level of upper- intermediate when i was at my 20s and I could write and read ideally, but i was scared to talk to the foreign people because I didnt want to be shamed of my BAD English. I was scared to pronounce the word wrongly or say the sentence or the verb in the wrong tense form (Past simple or Present perfect tense still confuse many people in Russia as we have only one PAST tense🤣) or wrong order. I always wanted to help foreign people to find the right way to somewhere (in St Petersburg we have a lot of tourists) and I could do it but talking to them more than telling the road was a nightmare for me as I thought I could understand nothing (especially US slang or Australian accent as I was learning British). Everything changed after I started traveling in EU and moved to China. I noticed that all foreigners (non native speakers) didnt care about tenses, pronunciation and correct words order so i began to practice my English and stopped being shy or scared to be ashamed😆. Everything comes with the practice🤪
I think they are ashamed to be on camera and speaking bad English!!! Then the whole world will know! But often I found that people who said that their English is not good, is actually amazing! I met many people in bars! After a few drinks people are more confident. When I came to Russia, I didn’t speak Russian and it was fine.
Fascinating video. I think I read that maybe 30% of Russians can speak some English. Maybe outside of Moscow and SPB the numbers are much lower, plus the camera effect.

На русском говорит 200 млн человек, как минимум, у нас великая литература. Учите русский, великий и могучий, и будет вам счастье. МЫ у себя дома и никому ничего не должны.

@@SamsRussianAdventures There's a lot of people in the world of course so I can imagine you aren't wrong you probably could say "people are lining up" but for me personally travelling to Russia from a country which has a hostile government is just a bit silly-I imagine there will be delays while they go through my all my documents and additional searches etc? Russia looks a beautiful country but the current geopolitical conditions aren't inviting for me personally right now haha

Самое смешное, что мы только что были в этом месте, и я прекрасно поняла вопрос (а моя знакомая вообще была учителем английского языка, но в тот момент как раз куда-то отошла!), но вспомнить простые фразы, а уж тем более правильно построить предложение, я не могла. А я ведь учила английский не только в школе, но еще несколько лет на разных курсах! Жестами мне все же удалось показать направление. Но это был травмирующий опыт для меня, поэтому, если бы вы задали мне вопрос, касающейся знания языка, я бы ответила однозначно: "No. I don't know".
I just discovered you through your other channel, B Road Russia. I wanted to say you could make hundreds of videos showing the interiors of the beautiful churches of Russia. Some of the art hiding in these churches is amazing. The west has never seen some of the gems hiding there.

I was an English teacher in Russia for 4 years, and I was very impressed with my students. They lacked self-confidence which I totally understand. I studied Russian and felt the same way because certain letters are very difficult to pronounce in Russian....The Russian R is impossible for me. :(
Anglo Saxons don't really exist as such in britain the Saxons were Germans invited in as mercenaries that then went to war with the kings that brought them in. Then you had the vikings take the entire east of England. Finally you had the French vikings conquer britain entirely. Anglo Saxon is a bit of a misnomer. At any rate it's the british government that's the problem, they are waging war on Russia and the british people.

In larger cities it is very easy to live a normal life, run a business and do everything locals do. I live in St Petersburg and many Europeans and Americans live here without Russian, and I speak so poorly that everyone suggests switching to English. Moscow is the same or even more so. I have 3 businesses I started, two are small and one is fairly large before covid but it is incoming tourism, so that has been inactive since Covid started, with 68 employees.
I know several people, attractive women, who have moved here, one is a talented jazz singer and the other is an actor in stage, TV and cinema. I have a very active social and cultural life far more expansive than back home in California. The museums, clubs, opera, ballet, jazz clubs, rock clubs, 500 English style pubs, 600 beautiful parks etc.
The cost of living is about 1/10th.
I think that it’s ok to move almost anyway. Look at Dan from Wild Siberia channel as an example. He didn’t speak a word when he arrived and he lives in a Siberian village!

Actually it’s quite rude and uncool to film a random stranger. They probably know at least some English, but are caught unprepared by the question and can’t switch their brains to English mode in a couple of seconds. They may not have used any English for a long time. The question, “Do you speak English ?” is a bad one, because it’s yes or no. Many good but not perfect speakers of English have a propensity to answer “No” to save perceived embarrassment. Better approach would be to say in tourist phrase book Russian, “Izvaneetye pozhalusta,” Do you know where I can get my hair cut? (In English). Do not ask “Do you speak English?” This gives them a few more seconds to plug their English language brain in. They will also feel that they are helping you. But I don’t know how to do with the camera. People worldwide wide are suspicious of and sick of surveillance.
I lived in Moscow in 2007 and had no issues getting around without speaking Russian. I still had a great time and met many good friends.

For us Scandinavians English is almost like a another Scandinavian dialect because of the Anglo Saxon and the Norse.
Almost every third word is almost the same because we once spoke the same language and is the same people in the origin.
So we have a great advantage whidout any big effort to learn English.
But to learn a slavic language is not easy.

I think that one can live in Russia without knowing the Russian language, but you will never really "arrive" in this country if you don't speak the local language.
You should also familiarize yourself with the respective culture and the
know the customs of a country, since this also has something to do with that
respect for the country and its people.
I myself, as a German, emigrated from Germany to Turkey more than fourteen years ago with my wife, who is of Turkish origin.
You can get along more or less with the English language or the German language, but in my experience, real access to people and real friendships are very rare, despite modern technology (translators), if you
doesn't speak the same language.
However, this is not only valid in Russia or Turkey, its worldwide.
It is not for nothing that many "parallel societies" have formed in various countries for this reason, where people practically remain "among themselves"...

Yes! You can get by here at first, but I don't like that some foreigners suggest here that you can live for years and not be bothered with learning language of the country. Make effort, be respectful to culture and people around you, learn to speak to them in language that speaks to their heart, not just passes your message

So, advise to foreigners, don't ask Russians on streets if they speak English. Most of the time you will hear "no" to that. Because we have different understanding of "knowing" language. To us it's almost like you ask us if we are "fluent in English" and rarely someone is. So people will say NO. Also many people are camera shy. They don't want to be on the spot trying their English skills that they are not confident about. They feel like on exam or something.
Just skip this question and ask what you actually mean to ask in your language. Bypassers usually try to be very helpful when asked for help, directions and thinds like that unless they really hurry. You just ask the wrong question.

directions are boring! Go for smth silly like "Karaoke" or "zoo" at least. Write a not which says "иди нафиг" (mild form of "get lost") and show it to people like someone gave it to you and it must have the direction but you dont understand whats written there on that note xD that will provoke funny reactions and they will be more eager to help you )
I was once stopped by some Russian in Prague and he was also asking where can he buy some sausages, very weird question to a random person at street. I didn't know if he really wants something to eat or he is looking for some gay club or something. Don't ask where you can buy sausages, it's weird. 🤣

Great video. I’ve spent time in Southern Russia in one month blocks and can’t speak a word of Russian. I did have Russian friends and girlfriend help me a lot, but when I was alone I got by using translation apps. Sometimes I only used the help of strangers and it would usually take me approaching 5-10 Russians before one would speak enough English to help me out.
In the past there were no supermarkets and I needed to ask the women behind the counter for each product!!! That was fun!!!!

Sam! It is very difficult for Hungarians to speak English. Hungarian sounds are mostly vowels, very few people in Hungary can speak English clearly without an accent.

С сыном в Питере были во время чемпионата, охранник на автовокзале попросил спуститься на первый этаж. Соответственно иностранцы, находящиеся там, не поняли и спросили у нас, что случилось. Пока я вспоминала, как слова в предложение связать (25 лет отсутствие практики), сын уже объяснил. Молодежь хорошо знает английский, по сетке общаются во время игры часто. А в Москве многих и на русском спрашивать бесполезно, не помогут, не из-за вредности, а просто сами приезжие, могут и не знать.
Наверное знают, только стесняются! Тем более я с камерой!

as a russian i v been "arrested" (spent some time at police station) in US once for telling a girl streamer has better chances to gain her first audience. Such a mess started. They ended up closing the gym door for police to arrive. In a matter of seconds i felt myself in the middle of a madhouse. And the second time one guy was trying to convince me of something and then added that he is gay as if it should change my mind and i dared to answer "my condolences"! Dude! )) Dont try this xD
English word hairdresser is a funny word though. Like people have to know what the entire word means because it's not obvious when you deconstruct it. Hair, dresser? Dress your hair? You mean a hat? A winter hat? summer hat?

I am from Czech republic, another slavic country same as Russia and we learnt Russian since primary school until 1989, I used to visited couple of times Russia as teenager, however I never had any issue to understand Russians and on contrary, even some Czech words are same as Russian one. After 1989, so called velvet revolution we started to learn German and English instead of Russian, even after 20 years I am still able to write and speak Russian and I guess I can live in Russia at any time without any language barrier, however I live in the country down under and I guess that I will stay here as Europe is doing economical suicide right now!

@@SamsRussianAdventures yes, some Russians are here too, but not so many here in Melbourne, I guess more Russians live in Sydney, here in Melbourne we have huge portion of Indians and Asians.

You yourself, a very happy person, it is very difficult to be like this, and to be able to live like that. Time of life, walks, and you need to be able to properly dispose of it. Russia is not the worst country for this.

Нам с малых лет в школьную программу вставляли иностранный язык - английский или немецкий, это классика. Я из поколения середины 60-х г.р. Особого внимания инязу многие не обращали внимания. Конец 90-х и меня заставила ситуация на минимальном уровне заниматься английским, чисто по работе. Самоучки. Вопрос - зачем мне нужно изучать другой язык, если я работаю в России? А почему английский язык является международным? Почему?! Почему не идиш или немецкий....французский или китайский...Русский (ах да, сложный и конкретный!)? А почему доллар? Не в обиду, но есть осадочек. Обнимаю, с любовью из России

Hi, Sam)) Actually Russian people mostly are shy to speak English because they dont know it well or just know some basics from the school.
We often want to help people but without knowing good English we are scared that we wont help but will confuse foreign person so he will be even more lost. So for some people are easier to say NO, I dont speak english to not to be ashamed and not confuse the tourist. I was the same many years ago😄...My English was at the level of upper- intermediate when i was at my 20s and I could write and read ideally, but i was scared to talk to the foreign people because I didnt want to be shamed of my BAD English. I was scared to pronounce the word wrongly or say the sentence or the verb in the wrong tense form (Past simple or Present perfect tense still confuse many people in Russia as we have only one PAST tense🤣) or wrong order.
I always wanted to help foreign people to find the right way to somewhere (in St Petersburg we have a lot of tourists) and I could do it but talking to them more than telling the road was a nightmare for me as I thought I could understand nothing (especially US slang or Australian accent as I was learning British).
Everything changed after I started traveling in EU and moved to China. I noticed that all foreigners (non native speakers) didnt care about tenses, pronunciation and correct words order so i began to practice my English and stopped being shy or scared to be ashamed😆. Everything comes with the practice🤪
I think they are ashamed to be on camera and speaking bad English!!! Then the whole world will know! But often I found that people who said that their English is not good, is actually amazing! I met many people in bars! After a few drinks people are more confident. When I came to Russia, I didn’t speak Russian and it was fine.
Fascinating video. I think I read that maybe 30% of Russians can speak some English. Maybe outside of Moscow and SPB the numbers are much lower, plus the camera effect.

На русском говорит 200 млн человек, как минимум, у нас великая литература. Учите русский, великий и могучий, и будет вам счастье. МЫ у себя дома и никому ничего не должны.

@@SamsRussianAdventures There's a lot of people in the world of course so I can imagine you aren't wrong you probably could say "people are lining up" but for me personally travelling to Russia from a country which has a hostile government is just a bit silly-I imagine there will be delays while they go through my all my documents and additional searches etc? Russia looks a beautiful country but the current geopolitical conditions aren't inviting for me personally right now haha

Самое смешное, что мы только что были в этом месте, и я прекрасно поняла вопрос (а моя знакомая вообще была учителем английского языка, но в тот момент как раз куда-то отошла!), но вспомнить простые фразы, а уж тем более правильно построить предложение, я не могла. А я ведь учила английский не только в школе, но еще несколько лет на разных курсах! Жестами мне все же удалось показать направление. Но это был травмирующий опыт для меня, поэтому, если бы вы задали мне вопрос, касающейся знания языка, я бы ответила однозначно: "No. I don't know".

I just discovered you through your other channel, B Road Russia. I wanted to say you could make hundreds of videos showing the interiors of the beautiful churches of Russia. Some of the art hiding in these churches is amazing. The west has never seen some of the gems hiding there.
