Using a big profile to get a keeper fluke (summer flounder) catch clean cook

  • The fluke bite definitely picked up a little in the western sound so I decided to make my way over to some shallow boulders that I thought might hold a few. Its always a challenge in these areas to fish through the porgies so I went out and tried a big enough profile that would be harder for the porgies to grab onto. Thankfully it worked out and we made some fluke fish tacos which were amazing!

Peter, keep the videos coming and thanks for sharing. I don't know about NY regulations, but in NJ, you can only use the fluke strips from the fish you caught that specific day and you must keep the rack in your possession for proof if stopped by a fish warden.

thanks Charles, ok that sounds about right from what I understand NY regulations to be as well. I really wish I could use the strips more easily, they work really really good.

haha thanks Justin! I unfortunately have lost the privilege to drink like a normal adult (clean and sober going on 11 yrs now) but I do agree that sounds like the proper finishing touch!

Went out of Plymouth today. Tons of dogfish to pick through, but there were about a dozen each of red hake (no regulations), and catch and release cod. Only saw three small haddock caught all trip. But the highlight of the day for me was catching a 30" pollock to take home (MA regulations are 1 fish over 19").

Hey Peter! Another great video! Thank you for all your efforts and putting all this together on RUclips. We really appreciate you! You are one of my favorite youtubers to watch. Thanks for teaching the proper way of filleting the Fluke. Watching you cooking and preparing those fish tacos was an extra bonus! I am still learning to eat fish here, this one is on my bucket list to do. This past weekend I went out for the first time on my new Yak, a little bit west of you at the mouth of the Long Island Sound. Even though I was fighting 15mph winds, wind gusts and big waves, it was an amazing experience! I love surf fishing and now that I experienced kayak fishing, I am excited to fish even more. I brought with me nothing but jig heads, a few plastics and the Tennessee Spice and your Stik O trick ;D. Lost a Big Striped Bass on the Tennessee on the side of the Kayak in the morning, I didn't even expect to hook onto something that big, as I was fishing for porgy's and fluke, rookie mistake. hehe Now knowing everything is possible in deeper water, I prepared myself for bigger fish. I did land a nice Striped Bass and a Sea Robin later in the afternoon at a different location. For my first time ever fishing off a kayak, I think this was a success! All thanks to you and your inspiring ideas and experience you shared, I was able to stomach up enough courage to go out alone on the kayak and try with some success. I am scouting for locations in the areas I am located for my next outing, to duplicate the types of structure I learned from you. I believe the next outing will be even more productive. Wish you and your family all the best! Keep doing what you do! Tight lines brother!

Wow Harry you made my day with this. Truly appreciate the kind words and so happy to hear your experience of using some thing you saw in my videos with success on your own trip! maiden voyage too, wow heck yeah thats a successful outing! that tennesee spice jerk shad would certainly be one of my go to lures for our areas especially in the summer months when water is a little dirty. keep at it, and keep researching spots, with every trip you will learn more and more. and it never ends, I'm learning still! Best wishes to you and the family as well, tight lines 🤙

Peter, I'm waiting for the "Ranieri shad" to come out. Elias V moved south a long time ago, so now YOU and Skinner are the top guns for me, West & East, respectively. I can't catch a keeper fluke to save my life but I almost always catch them when fishing for something else. Well done on the filet job. Greetings from Gio, Western Long Island Sound.

Gio, how's it going my friend. haha yea maybe someday but I have to admit the Elias shads are pretty good, especially for vertical jigging. LOL it's been very tough to find fluke out here, but it's still worth trying to get them I think, funny that you get them as by-catch that hardly ever happens to me. thanks and good luck out there!

on that thing we said previously about the fish finder
here is a good example at 1:59 you referred to the fish finder and said that you saw plenty of bait
    great
    i mean ok where
I see the screen and I see a ton of colors and lines
but i have no idea which one of those is the bait
so that is what I am requesting in the future
could you use a finger to show and to direct our eyes to which lines represent the bait and what the other lines represent
    thank you so much

    • @PeterRanieriII
      @PeterRanieriII  Год назад

hey Steve, the bait is that yellow cloudy-looking stuff just off the bottom. the bottom is the dark red color at the bottom of the screen, the blue background is the water. I think when it looks like clouds its really tiny bait. I can try to point to these things next time, good suggestion

    Peter....
As for your porgies eating bigger than their mouths. As kids, my brother had an aquarium with an infant 1" black bass. It ate a minow that was 3/4" and that bass swam around for a week with 1/2 of that minnow hanging out of it's mouth before it final digested the rest of it on his way to becoming too big for the tank and being released back into our backyard lake.
What's up with that knife sharpener?
    Link?
    Another great clip.
You catch a 30 pound striper....Everyone: "Nice fish."
You catch a 10 pound "door mat".... Everybody on the East Coast wants to see it..... Including ME ! Hope you bust a double digit fluke soon. Fall is the season...

Francus! been too long, haha thats a crazy story about the bass. I guess fish in general dont shy from an oppotunistic meal.

So true, would love to get a double digit from the kayak, that would be something else! Thanks for the encouragement my friend!

I heard some people rub there leader on the first fish they catch to get the sent on it.

    • @PeterRanieriII

that actually sounds like a good idea, i know tuna fisherman are super OCD about their leader line like you cant touch it without washing your hands etc...

Did you know that recreational fishing is a god-given right inherent right we all have, so why are we forced to buy a permission slip/license to catch a fish for food or fun ?
