I have also followed hydrogen as an alternate fuel for a long time. I too think electric is the wrong path, especially since we will need to build more generating plants that will pollute even with nuclear. Governments are on a popularity road without thinking it thru. I’m afraid that we will be stuck with electric until the downside becomes apparent about the costs of those ill informed.

Thanks for the recap of your experience regarding wins and fails. I went to ConExpo specifically to see the electric equipment and learn more about it. I have a couple of thoughts: A) yes, that machine is 4 hr run time. But there is no run time whenever you are not manipulating the controls. No energy is expended when you're not on the controls. There is no warm up time and cool down time. Nor is there idle time. 2) we are on the cusp of owners/ clients who mandate the use of electric equipment in their bid docs (think national parks, inner city, HOAs). If you're not onboard with electrical equipment, you'll be missing out on entire sectors of work.
Hydrogen is not the future of equipment. There is no infrastructure for it nor are the suppliers set up to deliver like a propane truck does.

80% of electric equipment will be working inside a building or underground. We all understand the charging downfall but, most of the company’s that are buying electric equipment are buying them in quantity’s. There are huge problems with hydrogen and why it isn't mainstream already. The first problem is where do you get it? Most H2 produced today is made from natural gas. If that is going to be the source you are better off just using the NG directly. The alternative is to use electrolysis to split water into H2 and O2 using electricity. You lose about 30% of the energy in the process. Then you have to compress it to huge pressures to be able to store enough to be useful. That loses another 10-15%. You lose a bunch in the fuel cell, then runa motor that loses 5-10% to run a hydraulic pump that loses a bunch. At the point of the electric motor you only have about 25% of what you started with.
The longevity of this equipment is unproven and won't likely last very long. The fuel cells in particular, and they are mega expensive.
The tanks are an explosion hazard and H2 is such a small molecule that it seeps thru many solid materials like steel. Which actually weakens the material (search hydrogen embrittlement).
If the gas ever leaks, it has a very broad flammability mixture range with air, making it far more likely to ignite that other gases we are familiar with and burns nearly invisibility so you don't see the hazard.
And I just saw an article stating it actually makes warming worse.
Bottom line, we have to be pretty desperate to really be using it. Currently it isn't doing anything to help the environment due to the poor efficiency and where we get it from.

Whatever happened there was shocking and extremely unprofessional. This was an important launch of all these new models for Manitou. If I were a shareholder, I’d want answers immediately. Lots of money went into bringing these new models to market plus the marketing budget to be at Conexpo was likely huge.
Sadly it took a lot of effort and money to create that beautiful booth with those shiny new models and it took mere minutes for a few people in the company to put a really big stain on Manitou’s reputation.

The cost of maintenance be much lower than the I.C. powered machine. Volvo, as good as their equipment is, I'm still reluctant with their whole electric excavator. You hit the nail on the head with everything you said. Only benefit of having electric is to keep noise pollution down. To me it's just a giant waste because my whole argument is where does the resources come from to a: create electricity, and b: where is the resources for these batteries mined. I know everybody wants the "clean energy" but it takes a lot of "dirty energy" to get that.
The window on that skid steer, while an impressive design with a folding window, it's impractical. Again, you hit the nail on the head, and I would add this. That seam is right in the operators field of view, so you would need to be looking over or under for doing work. And also, what if you don't get the door latched properly, or the latches fail? Down on your head if you're leaning a little bit forward. It's a true safety hazard.
The hydrogen machine is amazing technology, and going back 20-30 years, people have been creating prototypes for supplemental fuel sources for vehicles. It's about time that it's becoming more mainstream.

All electric battery power equipment has come a long way, but still has a ways to go before it can fully replace diesel power equipment, especially equipment that runs 10 to 12 hours a day. If you have to wait an hour or more to recharge, that's down time and down time cost money.

as far a battery power (I can't speak to equipment), I think it's best use is for fleets with known routes, school busses, transit busses, garbage trucks, and postal trucks among a few. mainly because there really aren't many "unknowns", you know the start time, the finish time, and it will be parked for the night anyway to recharge. those can all be designed to have enough battery power to complete the job.
just wanted to put my 2c in on the subject

    • @Dirtmonkey
      @Dirtmonkey  Год назад

yes- battery is perfect for those fleets but at the parking station their has to be an ENORMOUS charging station to refuel all those batteries. A milwaukee tools rep explained it best to me. He said that if Disney world switched all their trucks to electric they would have to have a reserve battery (charging station) the size of a 3 story building 75 feet long. NOT POSSIBLE!

I liked the Electric Volvo. It would be great for an individual who has solar panels producing free electricity, maybe on a ranch.
Also, if you only need it to work for a few hours on a jobsite and the rest of the time is labor, I can see that as a benefit.
A plumber who replaces main sewer line usually only needs to dig for an hour or so and then bury the replaced pipes.
If you are someone who needs it to work all day, this may not be a good option.
Maybe someone who has to do work at night and can't make a ton of noise would benefit as well.
I do understand that it wouldn't benefit you, but you don't have to buy it.
I have an electric Nissan Ariya that my wife and I love to drive and we like to plug it in on our driveway and really don't want to go to gas stations if we van avoid them.
We also have an F250 gas truck and a Toyota Sienna, which also uses gas.
We use the vehicle that best suits our needs on a given day.

What should be considered is the 4 hrs is continuous run time, this is time where the machine is actively being used so it can be on for more than 4 hrs ie no input into the sticks or pedals then it will essentially throttle down to point of not using any battery vs a regular machine would be using fuel the whole time. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, ideas and videos. If ecology is your high point please don’t forget, hydrogen is only a energy storage medium, you need to start with something else and add energy to make it. Most is made from natural gas and the co2 is vented at the production plant. It can be made from water but it takes a lot of electricity ie. Not very efficient. And the electricity has to come from somewhere. Batteries aren’t much better since the current technology use a large amount of mined materials with the overhead of the waste from mining in addition to the electricity production. The nice thing that they both have in common is once you have electricity on sight the remainder of the excavator is exactly the same. And the hidden benefits of that style is no idling under power. You may run a diesel machine for 8hrs a day, but how much of that is just sitting there waiting on the operator or others. This type of machine goes into low power standby in moments and is ready to go in an instant. Rather than picking one over the other I would gladly embrace both styles. And with a onsite charging solution a battery machine could be easily topped off during the operators lunch break. And be recharged overnight from the grid with off peak energy rates. Thinking thunder trailer with electrons to go instead of liquid hydro carbon. BTW you ever listen to the word hydrocarbon, it’s there in the name hydrogen-carbon. Your diesel is already a hydrogen machine. 😂 it’s just linked with carbon by nature. Wishing you and your family the best, always find your videos interesting and entertaining. Love to see the stuffed shirts run when they see you coming.
BTW, the line in the front door was bothering me and I was watching it on a tiny phone screen. They need to take the lead from the flexible phone screen industry and make it a roll up like a garage door.

Also yard environments would do extremely well with these kinds of equipment. 4hrs continuous run could be a full day intermittent easily. Notice he was saying these are not meant to replace an excavator that just gets dropped in a field. The real question is how much further does the tech need to develop before mass adoption takes off. If they cut that charging time from 1hr to a 30 min lunch break, it'll be really compelling. And the way these tech things advance that could be next year or the year after.

I think several things got missed in the discussion about electric power. The dramatic drop in maintenance and cost savings cannot be understated. The four hour time quoted is for non-stop use. The one hour charge is once, you can go home and let it charge overnight. “If” and only “if” hydrogen ever becomes commercialized it can instead be used to power an on-site generator to generate electricity for charging all the plug in equipment people have bought waiting for hydrogen to ever come to market. By then batteries will last an eight hour shift. The hydrogen equipment maker was quoted in a recent trade mag that it was a costly proof of concept with no plans to sell. The concept is being sent to shows to drum up interest like a concept car (to also recover and justify some of the development costs). It will come down to total cost of ownership and electric will always win.
