  • A favorite of mine! I've videoed quite a few Edsel convertibles of this year, but only one other hardtop. This is very special, with the interior looking just like it did when it rolled off the assembly line!

Hey, guys! It's funny....Pontiac used a similar grille arrangement, it was wildly popular. Edsel used it, and they failed! Who can figure! Thanks! :) Jack

Its amazing that all of the 1958 stamping presses and moulds and instrumentation must have been thrown in the bin after the first year!

Hey, Mick! I liken it to a bitter divorce, where one party throws out all the belongings of the other! Such was the bitterness of disappointment! Thanks! :) Jack

Nice Edsel!, It's a lot the same as the Ford too!, I actually sourced the front Frame member out of one of these for my 1959 Ford Fairlane as it was Rusted out!, Had a Frame Shop install it for $ 150 and you couldn't even tell it had ever been changed they did a awesome job for a great price!

Hey, JDP! It's very interesting about parts interchangeability! Recycling yards and body shops sure know a lot about it! The '59 Edsel used the Ford chassis, while the '58 model used the Ford chassis for the lower level cars and the Mercury chassis for the higher level series, i believe. Glad you found that donor car! Thanks! :) Jack

Definitely better looking than the original, IMO, but the die was already cast. That's too bad. I agree with you on the interior. Great car.

Some cars never really recover from a poor initial reception. Unfortunately for Edsel, it's a prime example, it's a car that no one particularly wanted except executives at Ford in hopes that earnings could increase. Thanks! :) Jack

This is a very attractive ‘59 Edsel. Market timing and competition were problems for Edsel. Almost all of the traditional
“medium price “ brands were under pressure in the late 50s as the market for smaller “economy” cars was growing fast . Sales of Rambler, new Lark, foreign imports were all up. Edsel also suffered from competition from the Ford upscale models like Fairlane 500 and new Galaxie.

You're right. Plus, I believe, there were quality control issues with the Edsel.

Agreed! It was the worst possible time to introduce another mid priced car as there was already a surplus of them. The costs of setting up separate Edsel dealerships could never be recovered, methinks. Thanks! :) Jack

I do believe they had quite a few problems overall. Not the best situation for a new car! Thanks! :) Jack

If only Edsel had been introduced in the fall of 56 as a 57 model, I think that it would have made it. Instead, it was introduced just as the Eisenhower recession hit and the market for mid priced cars was drying up.

Hey, Daniel! You point up a very important part of the Edsel story....the presence of a recession that in turn cut into the market for mid priced cars! Thanks! :) Jack

It is a nice car. Opinions… everybody’s got one I guess, so for what it’s worth, the ‘59 is much more aesthetically pleasing than the ‘58! It pulls off making a very rectangular design look interesting and accommodating. I can’t say enough about the grille, wraparound windshield, roof and rear window. Modern without being ostentatious. I’m surprised it didn’t survive a little while longer. (It’s certainly as handsome as its cousin Fairlane/Fairlane Galaxie.)

Hey, Ray! It definitely is more in tune with conventional design, both outside and in than its predecessor. You bring up an interesting point about its longevity. I'm sure Ford was taking a hard look at its initial sales. I have a feeling that as much as they were enthused about this car's development as a proud achievement, and had spent LOTS of money on development and setting up a separate dealer network, they had to really be embarrassed by the general public's lack of interest in the car. So what do you do when something is a thorn in your side...you might just cut its life short even though in reality it might have succeeded. No one wants to be reminded of a mistake! Thanks! ;) Jack
