Someone gave me an excellent tip for keeping home organized. Before you leave a room take 30 secs to tidy something up. Just 30 secs. It takes some pratice but then it becomes a habit and then it comes naturally to you. Solid advice. Helps me a lot.

I also like the 10 second rule. If it takes less than 10 seconds to do, just do it. Like instead of just kicking your shoes off at the door, take the extra few seconds to put them away. Little things like that add up so much!

Laundry: The key here is retraining your brain on what 'done' is. We tend to set it at once it's in the basket from the dryer. Reset to done is once it's all put away and the empty basket is back in its spot ready for new laundry. If you tell yourself you're done while the basket is still full, you're not going to empty that basket today. Laundry is done when dirty laundry is back in the closet clean and the basket is empty. I struggle w/ laundry in that I wait way too long to do it, but at least I've gotten as far as I'm not 'done' doing it til the basket is empty where it belongs and the clothes are clean and where they belong. That helped a lot.

She taught me something I’ll never forget- If you don’t know where to start or are overwhelmed about starting- just pick up the first thing you see and then keep doing that until it’s done! Usually helps because once you get going , the hardest part is over!

For people who struggle putting clothes away, I'd suggest looking at your inventory to see if you need to declutter some things. We're more likely to put things away if it's not difficult--having to squeeze in hangers, stuff things in drawers, or fold something a particular way to get it to fit are all obstacles that make it more difficult to put things away. Not folding things that don't need to be folded can also help because it's almost as easy to toss a t-shirt in a drawer as it is to drop it on the floor. Having to fold it up makes it more difficult and harder for us to get in the habit of doing it.

I would start donating to the thrift store than once a year. I used to think I needed to let clothing donations pile up, but now I don't do that and it has been so freeing! I have a small bag in my closet and if I put something on and decide not to wear it, I ask myself if I would miss it and if not, in the bag it goes. When full the kitchen size garbage bag goes in the back of my SUV. Then when I'm out and about I pop in and drop it off.

As someone with adhd, I also have a hard time cleaning and these tips are really helpful! You touched on combating time blindness, object permanence, making things fresh and exciting for the brain/preventing under stimulation - all issues that adhd brains struggle with.
Timers are super helpful not only to see how long tasks take but also to help prevent you from getting distracted. I think it’s called the pomodoro method or something, where you do a 20min timer of doing the task followed by a 5min timer for a break and then going back into the task timer (repeat until done). You can do any amount of time those are just made up numbers. But this has been really helpful in preventing hyper focus and with starting tasks.

    • @cheriberry3
      @cheriberry3 2 года назад +1

What do you recommend for people who have a hard time getting back into a task after stopping the task? I mean this seems like it might be a good way to break that hypervisation, but I feel a little hesitant trying that

    • @greendayrox489
      @greendayrox489 2 года назад

@@cheriberry3 that’s definitely a struggle for sure. It’s always important to remember that your personal brand of “productivity” is unique and doesn’t need to look like everyone else’s. If you do five minutes of dishes, stop before you’re done, do a little reading, bounce around from task to task etc it’s ok. A little bit of work is always better than doing nothing. Work with the energy of your adhd brain and not against it.
But I keep lists and alarms on my phones of what I need to get done. Sometimes I just walk around saying what I need to do out-loud to keep it fresh in my brain.

  • @zozlife

The rule I’m following for doing things I don’t like is that I’ll tell myself that I will be doing it for just 5 minutes, if after 5 minutes I still want to continue it, voila 🥳 if after 5 minutes I don’t really feel like doing it, I’ll postpone it for other time

Re the laundry struggle: I’ve limited myself to 50 hangers (for ALL my clothes) and this rule - if I buy something new I get rid of 3 items and if I buy something thrifted I get rid of 1 item. Surprisingly, I’ve adhered to this rule for over 10 years so my laundry/closet are bare so no mess. Right now I only utilize 30-ish hangers.
I loathe putting laundry away. So I have a clean basket and a dirty basket. Since I have basically no clothes, when the baskets are utilized they don’t look messy.

I came here thinking that none of this would work for my ADHD ass...
Turns out these are ALL the ADHD cleaning/motivation hacks I use on the daily!
The issue with thinking something is going to take longer that it is (or sometimes the oposite!) is called time blindness; that, plus getting overwhelmed by the amount of stuff to do are things that people with ADHD tend to struggle with!
We also tend to be visual/ big picture organizers (think Butterfly type, if you've ever watched the Clutterbug channel), so yeah, baskets that hide stuff are right out, but have you ever tried the wire/mesh baskets that you can see through? If you can see into it, it eliminates the "out of sight, out of mind" issue that ADHD tends to throw at me.
Also, if you find somethings tend to just land in one spot more often than not, try rearranging your stuff (like moving a table or adding a shelf) to make that it's permanent home, rather than trying to undo the pattern in your brain that has that already listed as the best place for it. Not only is it much easier to do that fighting against an ingrained habbit, you spend less time playing the "where did past me hide this object I need?" game.

I have to be able to see everything out in front of me, which is why I've always struggled with traditional storage methods.
Do you have any tips for storing non-clothing and non-book items? I find that bookshelves don't work very well for me since most things don't sit on bookshelves well the way books do. I love boxes and containers, but the problem is I tend to stack them and put them in front of my closet door and dresser drawers because there's no room for them, so then I can't get to my clothes 😆 It might be as simple as "get rid of everything that's not books and clothes", but that's just not realistic for me. I appreciate any ideas you have! Thanks a bunch! ❤

It won't change how I usually deal with my wardrobe, which is to put away summer clothes in October and bring them back out in April (which makes me feel like I have a whole new wardrobe twice a year, saves on closet space and gives me a chance to purge unused items), but last night I mixed up my tops in my closet and pulled out the one on the left. My laundry method for messy people is this: I have 3 “baskets” (hear me out!). One for dirty clothes that need to be washed, one for clean clothes from the laundry machine, and one for what I call “clirty” clothes (yes, weird name, but it’s stuck somehow). The clirty area is a shelf divider that is open in the front, and if I don’t feel like putting away my clothes that have been worn but aren’t dirty enough to wash, I stuff them in there. It’s obvious when it’s full, but I can still see what’s in there most of the time. No, this method isn’t the neatest, but it keeps me from hating myself and actually keeps the floor pretty uncluttered. One note: I can’t stand leaving clothes on the floor bc it’s dirty, but my partner does that. I introduced them to this method and they’ve taken it up too! They still leave clothes on the floor sometimes, but I think that’s because they don’t have a separate clean laundry basket.

For putting away clothes that have piled up, you used my number one tip which is to set a timer (usually 10-15 minutes) and challenge myself to put everything away in that time. I usually offer myself some kind of simple reward if I can get everything done. It really helps prevent me from getting off track and fixating on other things. I do a similar method when trying to declutter, I set some kind of timer and tackle just one drawer, one section of my closet, etc. at a time and so I don't have time to mull over one shirt for hours and I typically find my decisions are much more gut decisions. I tend toward being a pack rat, so encouraging myself to declutter smaller amounts often works much better for me, rather than trying to tackle huge jobs all at once because I tend toward keeping a lot more I don't need/like anymore!

Something my step-dad taught us when I was young: Just do fifteen minutes. First thing in the morning, before bed, or after work. Take 15 minutes every day and tackle what you can. It's less daunting that way.

    • @VL-rh5tu
      @VL-rh5tu 3 года назад +1

Yes! The only way I get myself to clean is to set 15 minutes for any kind of cleaning or to set a goal of "take 50 items to where they belong". That I can do even several times a day iif needed, but I could never have a task like "clean the kitchen". The size of that is way too daunting and makes me freeze and not do anything (like I will literally be stuck on the sofa guilt-tripping about not cleaning). For my ADHD brain it has to be small enough that I can go past the time blindness 😊

For laundry I literally do a load a day... so that I am not overwhelming myself... and I have my laundry area soooo beautifully decorated and comfortable to fold that enjoy being there, I don't mindn because its kinda relaxing. In addition, I have my Google hub max to stream things and a stool to keeo myself distracted and I don't leave until the load is all folded. I take it right out of the dryer onto the counter. If I have things to put away... I don't put more loads to wash. I find that when I have a pile-up... it feels like a huge task. Therefore many smaller loads... that are spread out help me feel like the task isn't so huge and dreadful

    1. I dont sort my clothes. I wash everything together in one mashine the week (for me and my boyfriend) on every saturday
    2. If I need an extra wash, e.g. For bedsheets, I Do it right now
    3. I use a dryer because otherwise everythings ends in Chaos... I really tried, but no
    4. If my clothes are washed and dried I put the Basket on my bedside so I can't Go to sleep before putting everything away (it is always only one Basket because of my washing Routine)
I hope my english is understandeble. Best wishes from Germany

Personally this is something I’ve struggled with for years, defaulting to throwing my clean clothes in a gain scented bin bag.
Recently I’ve conquered this after I watched Kelsey’s closet clear out and realized I needed to “design my closet” I needed to make it a space I wanted to be in. Once I did that, and agreeing with another commenter the laundry isn’t done til it’s put away, and a new rule, if it’s on the floor it’s dirty. No matter how clean I keep the floor. This is because if I wash my clothes too much I will wear things out faster. It makes me keep it off the floor.

Even the best system for handling laundry can be foiled by those we live with, amIright? That aside, I take most clothing straight from washer immediately after it stops, shake them 2 or 3 times, stick em on a hanger and maybe give a tug on collars & cuffs if they've been crumpled. I do this while watching TV in the rec room. Hang them damp on closet rods I mounted under the furnace vent in the utility room. Saves electricity, saves wear and tear on the clothes. Grouping them by person takes no extra time at all. Underwear, T shirts, towels, bedding etc get machine dried. Sock matching, underwear folding and towel rolling are done in front of the TV or laptop so I'm entertained while productive. Here's the catch: instead of taking their stuff to their closets, they just run down to the basement and dress right there, discarding clothes or used-just-once towels on the laundry room floor. Ignoring the handy IKEA sorting basket-drrawer thingy's that are RIGHT BESIDE THEM.
So I'm thinking the best laundry solution is to design homes with a large laundry-AND-DRESSING room right there on the bedroom level, give everyone a terry bathrobe, and only own a bare minimum of bath towels.

I like organizing my clothes into piles, before I put them away. Like I fold towels, jeans, and sweaters first cause they are the bulkiest items and make my pile of laundry look more daunting. But if I separate, and fold/put away certain things first it not so daunting. Also I'm also moving faster cause I'm doing the same fold for the same type of clothes, and then putting all of that type of clothes away...so I don't have to keep reopening my jean drawer multiple times.

Like my sisters underwear and my underwear go in separate piles but i fold them at the same time. That way it's also easier to put it away after folding it and you don't have to check every item again! You just take the whole pile of tshirts and put it away

I’ve been doing a similar method with my clothes but instead, I combined it with the “flip your hangers around” trick. So that way I have a specific way to organize things based on clothing type and when I wear something, I flip the hanger- but I challenge myself to build outfits with only things that ARENT flipped around yet (ie things that haven’t been worn yet). Then after a while, I get rid of things that aren’t flipped. I like it and it works decently, but the rack idea of going front to back, instead of randomly based on hangers- is a little less chaotic. I love it, thanks for sharing!

For laundry, having multiple small hampers (instead of one giant one) works great for me. White dirty clothes, coloured dirty clothed, (and since I divide my closet by tops and bottoms) tops that have been used but still clean, bottoms that have been used but still clean, miscellaneous (such as bra's and socks and scarfs), clean (aka stuff I was going to wear but changed my mind) (also if you live in cold weather maybe a sweaters one?). It's not perfect, but it keeps everything off the floor, and relatively organized. Saves on laundry since I'm not washing stuff that isn't dirty yet, and it's a hell of a lot easier to tackle one small hamper than a big one. So one day I wash the whites, another day I put away the tops, another day a tackle the miscellaneous, etc. Hope this helps!

I suppose if you were getting home really late and that wasn't feasible (although really it only takes like 15 minutes max to unpack for me) you could put the suitcase on your couch or in your shower - somewhere it won't be able to hide - and then put it on your bed in the morning.

Extra tip for dishes: Instead of leaving them on the counter when you're done eating, take an extra 30-45 seconds to rinse them & put them right into the dishwasher. Then when it's full it's ready to run and you don't ever have dishes waiting on the counter unless you put off putting the clean dishes away.
Don't have a dishwasher? It still only takes less than 2 minutes to use soap to wash & rinse the dish, dry it & put it up. If everyone in house does this to their own dishes, no one ever has to 'do the dishes' that accumulate. Same with pots & pans after cooking.

What I do is just pack them permanently. There is always one bag that I take for a specific activity: knapsack, suitcase, crossbody bag...one or all depending on the trip. If I keep small bottles of products (Dr. Bonner), specific items for that event (water shoes), etc. Even some things I'll have two...just because it limits the stress of remembering what to pack because the essentials are already there.

I don't mean to sound 🙀catty. I'm impressed she finds structure & simplicity in this "last in/first out" closet organization method. It's a lovely example of how her mind thrives on such a spontaneous, daily exercise.
💯% a systems gal. I admire anyone that creates an organizational system that serves them. That's easy to maintain. That reduces their stress level.
😔I'm just on the other end of the organizational spectrum, so her system would be a bit 🥺overwhelming for my more matchy-match instincts. Much more at ease keeping "like" clothing sorted by...
      (1) CATEGORY:
      Tops/Vests/Jackets 👚/🥼
      Bottoms 🩳👖(skirts)
      Misc 👗(Suits, Special Occasion)
      (2) COLOR:
      Black🖤, 0live Green 🫒/🪖,
      Red🍒, brown🍫, Chambray🧊, Navy⚓, White🤍, Pink🥿, Gray⚫, + misc. Note: Keep a gap between black & navy, so I don't mix them up by mistake😳.
      (3) COMFORT*:
      (cool😰🩱/🎽/👕/🦺
      vs hot🥵 👔/👘/🧥 layers).
*🌄Mediterranean/Desert🏜️ climate that skews more sunny/warm🌡️year round. Plus, my hormones run hot😡. As a result, fabric weight & sleeve lengths are a major consideration. Find it easier to layer to add interest & warmth as needed. Own far less long sleeves, heavy weaves, &/or knits.
😬I also dislike wearing 🦠 germy outside shoes👟/clothes👖 inside my home🏡. More like TV "Mr Rogers" when I come through the door🚪.
      👠Shoes must get swapped👡/🩴.
🤔Unless I'm planning to go back out right away, will shed my outdoor clothes & change into indoor options (i.e., "pjs" for residents only, "loungewear" if expecting guests, "atheleisure" if going in & out of private areas + possibly
      👀seen by neighbors).
Finally, like rotating hanger on closet rod to show an easy visual of which garments have been worn. It high-lights items that need scrutiny &/or inspiration.

My fav method for cleaning out my closet is putting anything I am unsure about, or think "maybe I can make an outfit" but I know I haven't worn it in 3 months into a box. I then put the box in the garage or back of the closet and don't open it unless I'm looking for a specific item. After 3 months anything left in the box clearly isn't something I use often so I can donate it. Don't open the box though-once you look you might be tempted to take pieces back. 😉❤️ This is a low pressure way of taking things out of my closet and clearing up space.

LOL to the Olympic Canadian Gloves. I have lost 1 glove from each year so I have mismatched gloves 😅 ❤

Right now in California, it’s barely getting colder so all my summer clothes are in baskets and my winter clothes are finally in my closet.

You could do a DIY for the entrance where you have like a slim version of a wine rack (meaning, loads of small square boxes) so you can put a rolled scarf or pair of gloves in each one 🤔🤔

I hang my clothes onto hangers to dry, so then they can go straight back into the wardrobe.
Also get a couple wall hooks for clothes that aren't dirty but have been worn - like jeans. So you can just chuck them on the hook rather than the floor. 💕
And lastly, planning out your outfits, so then you don't pull everything out haha 😆

    My suggestion for decluttering clothes:
So that you know which clothes you have worn within a year, I would suggest that you hang the hangers from the back of the rack and not from the front. Every time you take out an item of clothing and wear it, you put it back on the rack from the front. Everything that still hangs 'the wrong way around' on the clothes rack can be sorted out :)

The two things that have really really helped me with keeping a tidy environment is decluttering (like real hardcore decluttering 😊) and do it now if it takes less than 5mins.
Also I agree that putting away needs to be easy so avoiding complex storage systems helps (boxes within boxes within drawers... You just won't do it😁)
    Thanks for sharing your tips😊

That's such a good clothing method. I tend to organize my clothes by color and type (tops/bottoms/sweaters/dresses/etc) for the sake of keeping my closet organized. Even though it keeps my closet organized, at least 60% of my wardrobe remains untouched. Your method is almost like a revolving closet? Could that be a possible name? The revolving closet method? lol

method to my own closet... i now have several outfits picked out in my head with things i haven't worn in three years!!

Becky, I know this may be a future project, but this solved my putting laundry away procrastination. We designed & had our home built just over 10 years ago. Thpugh I did a lot of the building myself. Anyway, two of the best ideas came from my genius husband, Jim. Lights that automatically come on when opening the doors, like in the pantry, and closet, and to put the washer & dryer in our 11×14' closet. It also serves as our linen closet. I then built in all the shelving and racks myself, and added chest of drawers, below some of them. I adore it! Everything is altogether, smells fresh, and stays tidy, 96ish percent of the time.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE hire me! I'd organize everything you've showed us today! lol! Also I think your method of seeing if you're gonna give away clothes should be called the Mirror Method! Cuz the way you do it, it's really up to the mirror!
