ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER - TE ARAROA

- In 2016, after crossing the Pacific Crest Trail in the US, I knew I was not done with long distance hikes. 3 years later, I flew to the other side of the world to cross the length of New Zealand on foot on the Te Araroa and back. But what is it really like to cover 6000 kilometers in 141 days?

I can't believe you biked back to the cape after you walked from there to the Bluff
You are an absolute Legend bro. Mad respect. Even got watery eyes watching some parts of your journey.
Thank you for sharing your awesome🤙🏼
Wow thanks so much. Your comment goes straight to my heart!
I think its a fab idea.
Amazing trip, and an amazing country! Loved New Zealand.19 years ago I met my wife while hitchhiking the South Island...
I did some similar travel before smart phones and You Tube, Hitched from CapeTown to Tanzania and back, and spent 7 months exploring Europe by bike. You are so right, your desire to be alone in nature is what pulls us out there. Just wish i could share some of it like you have. Well done!!
Wow it must have been incredible journeys! Congrats and thanks a lot for your comment
After the amazing trailer, I was really exited. Let me tell you, i was not disappointed. 25 minutes of adventure, beauty, thoughts and emotion. Awesome video Jean ! Thank you for making this. You are the best ! PS: Great soundtrack aswell.
Awesome Video! Loved the music too ❤
Epic journey dude! Beautifully documented and thanks for sharing. Appreciate all the effort required to capture these landscapes.
Thank you so much 😊So nice to read that kind of comments
So difficult to make a solo walk entertaining to watch. Bravo! the montage at 14 min mark is really cool.
the moment in the video you decided to bike back, i was like "fuck yeaah".
dude this has been a treat to watch, plus it hits close to my heart. I live here, and i've done a motorcycle ride around the south island, those 14 days are still the best days of my life. I can only imagine how it feels for you. this country, these mountains does make you cry man. it's what new zealand does.
keep travelling dude!
Wow, that you so much Manu, it makes me so happy to read comments like this! New Zealand is such a special place, I'm dreaming everyday to come back. Cheers, Jean
Dude amazing storytelling, capture and edit!👏 Although I haven’t hiked it (yet), it really gave some insight in the trail and all the emotions that come with it. It also gave a lot of inspiration for my own film, so thanks a lot! Can’t wait to hike it myself in Q4 2023💪
Thank you so much 🙂 It means a lot to me. Hope you'll have an amazing adventure on the trail!
Wow incredible! I was in NZ just last year, wish I did at least a part of this trail!
Also damn man, the twist of "well i came all the way down here, might as well just bike back" was insane!!
As a fan of both hiking and bikepacking Im just floored by your grit, kudos to you, hope to see more of your trips!
Oooh thank you so much for your comment, it goes straight to my heart! It the first time that i was filming something so it encourages me to do to more. Have you planned any trips this summer? Cheers
Those sunset shots though! Incredible video, thanks for sharing Jean!
Thanks!
Superbe vidéo, bien réalisée qui donne envie ! 😊
WOW! This brings back so much memories from my Te Araroa thru-hike in 2015/2016. Incredible how much you can remember after so many years...recognized Bog Inn Hut immediately despite all the bush :) The film made me cry... Thank you!
This is such a good TA video - my personal favourite. Big thanks for introducing me to Camel Power Club too! Epic music all through this.
Loved the plot twist at the end where you just hop on your bike ! Incredible ! :D
What an awesome video. You brought so many amazing memories back from my TA hike. Even the small streams you got your water from and the 80+ rivercrossings after Comyns Hut :´D. Sooo great memories. Thanks heaps for sharing these!!!
When did you do the TA? Thanks for your comment :)
@@jeanhacquart9914 i hiked it the season 18/19 so my start is nearly 2 years back but man, i still miss it every day!
Beautifully made. I enjoyed every second of it! This one definitely goes on my bucket list.
What an inspiring video, awesome stuff !!!
Wow i amazed by what you've done
Wow, this video is incredible. Kudos, unreal work!!
Thank you we walked TA in 2017/2018 and it was lovely to travel back with you . Beautifully filmed 😊
What an inspiring trip! It made me dream of new landscapes to visit and brought some joy to my day :) I hope you will make other films when you will have the chance!
Thank you so much 😊 It was a first film but not the last I hope!
Congratulations man! What an epic journey
Thank you so much 🙂
Fantastic film! Good job!
Brings back lots of good memories from the trail. I hiked the trail in 18/19 and i think i meet you briefly in a hut at the south Island, think it was near Gladstone we talked about Salomon hiking shoes😁Thanks for sharing!
Oh yes, I think I remember 😊 Thanks so much for your comment. Hope we can meet again one day on a trail around the world!
Well done my friend. I wish I could have joined you on this one!
Thanks Brian! Maybe on the CDT one day? :)

Jean - that was beautiful. Your incredible stories and wonderful story telling and movie production is impacting lives, including ours. Thank you for making this movie for us all and sharing with us such a personal journey. One day I hope you will come to Australia and we can show you some wonderful places to hike/ride here! Cheers and thanks from Sydney - Dave
Hi Dave, Thank YOU! It means so much to me to read a comment like yours. So thank you a thousand times! Australia has also a special place in my heart, I hope to come back one day. I hope to see you one day in France! Cheers
@@jeanhacquart9914 You are very welcome. Australia is pretty special with so much natural diversity. We would love to be back in France too - we were there in Oct '19 and now in lockdown, are learning more about your beautiful part of the world so we can return some day and properly explore. Take care and cheers - Dave
Great movie Jean. Awesome pictures and i guess an awesome experience. :D
Beautiful video! Thanks for sharing.
Bluff ant
Haha j'adore le jeu de mots !
Amazing!!
Amazing video, i can't wait to attempt my thru this year! I'm not a gear head but I would love to have a read through your gear list if you have one?
Incroyable ! Bravo à toi et merci !
So good. Loved following your travels. 👏🏻
Excellent camera work, an attractive movie.
Thanks Arnd!
Amazing film. Kia ora!
I just rewatched this. This movie makes me happy. Need a base in Germany? :)
Thanks for watching again Christoph! Whats part of Germany are you from?
Great storytelling, hope to hike the TA sometime!
I really enjoyed this
Very cool video.
Brilliant!!!
Well done bro,wicked🤙🤙
Respect, Jean !
Ha ha I stayed at bog Inn for one night 20 years ago.
Top effort buddy
Thank you for this video, so inspirational. I really want to do this
Hey man love the video really awesome, I’m interested on what did you use to edit the video?
Did you hire the bike? Love to know more details please. You make me smile everytime you say" your so happy".
I brought it from France by plane! And left it at a friend’s place while hiking. Oh thank you, then I'm even happier 😉
Great video! Beautiful footage and scenery. New follower here. Crow✌️
Jean, amazing work on the walk and the video. Where can we find more out about your gear and setup? Especially your camera and video gear.
Hey Scott! Sorry for the late reply, I missed your comment. Feel free to contact me on Instagram @jean_hac. I've filmed everything with a gopro and I took my photos with a Fuji X-T20.
I'm hoping to start October 1st. Thanks so much for sharing.
Hi Antonia! Thanks so much for watching. I'm super excited for you, it will be a splendid adventure 🙂
16:47 - Nice.
Merci Jean...
Great video! And brutal work. I love those parts where you look so tiny in the massive landscape, and I think: oh man, he has to come back to pick up the camera 😅. A 3000kms hike turns into a 3050kms with all that forward and backwards…I am still in minute 17 but I needed to write this.
Hahaha yes at least 3050km! But at the end it's something really fun to do. Thanks so much for watching :)
Awesome trip mate well done.
Greetings from Buenos Aires and congratulations for your awesome film! I'm wondering if your backpack wasn't a bit short for your torso lenght...
Muchas gracias Federico 🙂It's true that when you're watching the video, you can think it's a bit short but it was the perfect size I have to say (I made plenty of measurements before choosing it)
Well done
Wahou !!
Out of interest, what shoes are you wearing?
Thanks
Hey, Salomon Sense Ride and Salomon Ultra Pro
Wow man I’m going to this awesome thing end of this year! Appreciate to make this video! And what camera do you use?
Awesome! Thanks for the comment! I used a GoPro Hero 7 to film and a Fuji XT20 for the photos
Well done. What brand of Salomon shoes did you find best for this walk?
Hi Jeremy! For this walk I really liked the Sense ride and the Ultra Pro.Those are trail running shoes. At the moment I'm using the new X-Ultra 4 which is more of a proper hiking shoe 😉
Superb Cinematography. Inspirational in every way. Would you share your camera set up (body, lenses, action cam ...)
Thanks a lot Chirstoph! For filming I only used a GoPro Hero 7 and for photos a Fuji XT20 and a 35mm lens. I hope it helps!
@@jeanhacquart9914 Thanks Jean. Would accessories did you use with the gopro - clips, swivel mounts?
@@christophrehse only a flexible tripod (Gorilla Pod 325). Super handy to put the GoPro anywhere (floor, trees, hiking poles...) and 2 extras batteries
Magnifique.
@@jeanhacquart9914en 2016 ! (Novembre 2016-mars 2017). Le GR10 semble un beau projet localement :)
@@margueritepierson99 Tout à fait d'accord pour le GR10 :)
Love it - how do you fund your lifestyle?
Hi Nicole, I'm working in a french company while I'm not traveling, and I save money 😉
What a legend! How long did it take you to cycle back to north?
I am deffo doing this once I finish uni!
Hey marc, it took me about 40 days, but I'm not a cyclist so I was quite slow 😉
Amazing footage and what a great edit! Do you have any material from your pct hike online? Instant sub!
Hi Roland! Thanks a lot. I have a few photos on my instagram account (@jean_hac) if you want to see some, but sadly no video
What month did you start your Te Araroa hike?
Hi Neylena! I've started early November :)
Epic effort Jean...very impressed. How much weight was in your pack on average? Im considering it but im not into heavy packs with a bad shoulder :)
Keep up the good work
Thanks a lot Colin! My base weight was about 5.7 kilos. Yet, with food and water, I guess I had on average 9 to 12 kilos after resupplying. I can share my gear list if you want 🙂
@@jeanhacquart9914 thanks for the reply jean, would love to see the list if its not too much trouble. Regards Colin
Would love to see this list too! :)

Hey, amazing video loved it! Can I ask what lake is that at 15:22 ?
Thanks a lot! if I remember well, it's Lake Constance :)
What shoes did you wear mate?
I've changed during the trip. Only Salomon shoes, Sense Pro, Sense Ride, Ultra Pro :)
Hi, what an awesome adventure! I wonder how you did manage to get your bike there? Did you just buy a new one and let it ship to a friends garage?
Hi Johannes, thanks heaps for you comment! I brought the bike by plane, in a box (I just removed the wheels, handlebar, pedals). No extra cost usually if you're following the instructions given by the plane company. Then I left it at a friend’s place while hiking 😊
@@jeanhacquart9914 Nice and thanks for answering :) The logistics sound quite difficult, how did you get it to your friend in Bluff when you started in the north? Did you send it to him once you arrived in New Zealand?
@@johannestropf6127 Actually I landed in Invercargill with my bike. I left it there and took a plane to Bluff to start hiking. So when I finished walking, my bike was already there, ready to go!
@@jeanhacquart9914 Thaks :) Did you ever make a video/blog post where you compare your trips by foot and by bike? I guess the experience will be totally different.
@@johannestropf6127 I haven't actually, but you're right, i should :) A lot of differences indeed. Have you ever been hiking or biking yourself?
Is your tant is Zpack? I wanna know what gears you bring while thru-hike
Yes it is! It's an old one I bought in 2016 while hiking the PCT. I think the name is Hexamid. Let me know if you want more info 🙂
Did you not film your PCT hike?
Sadly no, I only took photos back then. Would be happy to share them though if you're interested 🙂
@@jeanhacquart9914 love to see them.
@@antoniabaker7770 maybe you can contact me on instagram? @jean_hac 😊
